Nanuet, NY had 93 people total if I'm not mistaken. That is nonsense. BRs were never supposed to be such big events

Why an artificial limit, though? The more matches you play with a consistent deck, the less luck becomes a factor in your final record. More people means more rounds means the best decks and players of the day rise to the top.

Players should always wish for big turnouts, no matter how many CP's are on the line.

I was fine with the system until I saw multiple X-0s near the top.

How is the player that comes second with X-0 meant to do any better?

They're not. That's where the luck of match ups and computed resistance still come into play.
12 points for second place in a battle road is still pretty good.

Because the alternative doesn't make a ton of sense either: those two players face-off in a Best of Three match that keeps the organizer and judge there for at least another hour? That's something OP is explicitly trying to improve..."to make some of the lower tier events less time consuming." OP was probably anticipating the higher attendances and due to restricted venue sizes and open times, so no top cut helps organizers continue to hold these events.

It is impossible for there to be 2 or more X-0s at the end of swiss unless the TO runs the tournament with the "One Less Swiss" round option.

It is possible to have 0 X-0s at the end of swiss. This happens in the tournament when an X-0 plays down to an X-1 and loses to the X-1, then in later rounds, more then likely the last round, there is 1 X-0 and a bunch of X-1s. The X-0 plays down and then loses. This will results in NO x-0s.

But 2 or more X-0s at the end of swiss... IMPOSSIBLE, unless the TO runs the tournament with the "One Less Swiss" round option.

You can't run "one less Swiss" without a Top Cut.

There can be up to 3 Undefeated players in any given tournament. Just never in the same age group.

In seniors at nanuet there were 2 kids that entered late, which unfortuantely meant that although there were 17 players, there were still only 4 rounds with no top cut.

By the end of swiss there were two 4-0s. Luckily for my friend he had really good tiebreakers, but the other 4-0 wasn't so fortunate. He didn't lose a single game and yet he still walked away with second place.

If there was a top cut, this would not have happened

If the kids hadn't been late, it wouldn't have happened then either. Would not want to be the guy that got second either.

If there was a top cut, there would've been a chance that BOTH undefeated would've lost and walked away with less CPs and prizes.

Point is, top cut or no top cut, there's always going to be someone disappointed. That's just how the game works.

Now wouldnt this not be an issue if being late was a game loss. Other tcgs ive played gave you a round loss if you showed up late

the second 4-0 would have been placed second anyway due to being marked 'late'...

I believe he is implying that neither late player went 4-0, but because of the fact that the round #'s had already been set when they showed up, they were still only given 4 rounds...

However, I would guess the first round had not yet been paired, as if it had, both late players would've been given R1 losses, and there would've been no effect on the number of final X-0's.

Pokemon does too, as long as the PTO marks you late in TOM (automatic once this first round is paired AFAIK)

But the point is that they would have lost at least 1 game to be knocked out of the event. As it happened, a player who was undefeated came in second place. Having a top cut would prevent this situation.

I think Swiss is just as good a way of finding the best player as a top 4.

Honest question. In your opinion, why have top cuts at any event at all then? Or were you saying that no swiss is just as good as top 4 in a event with larger attendances such 108 masters?

With an event that big, it's a crapshoot either way. The only way you truly find the "best player" is by running the full Top Cut, which I believe would have been 16 for that event. About all you can get out of that is the least-unlucky player of the day, and that's about it.

Doesn't really matter. With attendances like that, the game's gonna stick for a good, long time.
