Deck: The Answer
Event: Norwich City Championships
Format: HP-on
Division: Masters

Right, this is the first Premier Rated tournament I’ve played in since the Autumn, so I wanted to win a lot. I knew that there would be a few GG decks, and since none of my decks seem to be countering them too well, I thought I would try to make a deck that could counter it and have a good game against most others. Now, I also wanted to play GG myself, but lacked a Gardevoir Lv.X (SW), so couldn‘t. After seeing the Answer on here, I thought it looked quiet good, so decided it would be a good deck to play. However, I also hoped I’d be able to try it out for a week or two before the tournament, which, apart from for RedShark, didn’t happen (I needed to borrow some cards off people).
I suppose I should show you the list I was playing.

Pokémon (24)
4 Pidgey (SW)
2 Pidgeotto (SW)
2 Pidgeot (SW)
2 Pidgeot (HP)
3 Magikarp (MT)
3 Gyarados (MT)
4 Sentret (SW)
2 Furret (SW)
1 Remoraid (MT)
1 Octillery (MT)

Trainers (19)
2 Roseanne’s Research
1 Crystal Beach
2 Lake Boundary
4 POV
2 Warp Point
3 Rare Candy
2 Night Maintenance
1 Windstorm
2 Celio’s Network

Energy (17)
4 Holon WP
1 Holon FF
6 Water
1 Psychic
3 DRE
2 Scramble

Strategy - Disruption from Pidgeot (HP), to stop Poké-Powers from non-Delta Pokémon, Furret as the starter to try and get everything set up, and the use of Gyarados (MT), Octillery (MT) and Pidgeot (SW) to be main attackers. Gyarados (MT) can provide the main beat down of the deck, with Enrage and Flail providing good damage. Pidgeot (SW) provides more disruption, with Whirlwind also acting as damage spreading in the deck, which is helpful when Gyarados can’t get a OHKO. Octillery (MT) provides specialised sniping or the discarding of Special energies, which ever is needed more. FF is generally used to try and activate Delta Reverse, while WP can make Gyarados (MT) and Pidgeot (SW) stop annoying effects from attacks.
For a more detailed strategy, look here.

Before the tournament, I had a lot of practise matches to test the deck out and make sure I knew how to play it. It was quite successful, beating GG a couple of times, but lost to the same one and a T2 Banette. I wasn’t daunted though. However, when we found out that there was only to be 3 rounds of Swiss due to the lack of players (7 in Masters I think), I was slightly annoyed. Oh well, onto the first round.

Round 1: vs. Vanessa (Darkrai/Palkia/Dialga/Exploud/Empoleon?)
Yeah, not exactly a deck you’d expect to see or do well, but she was basically here for her son to play, and decided to pay herself. Anyway, she started with Darkrai no.3, and I with Remoraid, with which I went first and Sharpshot Darkrai. I managed to get a T3 Furret while she was getting energies to attach to Darkrai, which allowed me to get a Pidgeot (SW) and a Scrambled Gyarados (MT) set up while she KO’ed my Furret and got an Exploud with 3 energies attached, a Palkia and a Piplup out. I sent Gyarados out, Enraged, and Confused myself. How fun. I kept trying to Flail after she Ambient Noised for a bit, and I ended up KOing myself from Confusion. By that time, I had Octillery (MT) and a Holon FF’ed Pidgeot (HP) out. I sent in Octillery, which was duly KO’ed by Hyper Voice. I then sent Pidgeot (SW) up, and started to Whirlwind everything, including to Piplup, Palkia, Loudred and Exploud. After Pidgeot (SW) had taken 50 damage, and thus in fear of being KO’ed by Hyper Voice, I sent Pidgeot (HP) in to Rotating Claws Palkia, Piplup and Dialga. Once it was Hyper Voiced, I ended up putting Pidgeot (SW) up to KO Exploud and Loudred, and thus win.
1-0

After that, I had a bit of a look around to see how people did. I found out that 1 GG lost, but the other 2 won. At least I had a good chance of facing them, which was what I wanted. So…

Round 2: vs. Richard (Infernape/Nidoqueen/Typhlosion/Aerodactyl)
Of course, that would happen. At least it was a fire deck, I since I knew what it was from the off, I liked my start of Magikarp and Pidgey, with Gyarados (MT) and Pidgeot (HP) in my hand. Unfortunately, I only had a Water and a WP in my and, so I needed him to damage me, and with Magikarp as my active, I was hoping it would be. Of course, he started with Holon’s Castform instead. With no Rare Candy (or anything really), the first few turns were quite boring, with us both needing to set up, and me needing a DRE to attack. I misplayed when I drew a Scramble, and thought it would be a good idea to attach it to Gyarados. When I finally KO’ed Holon’s Castform Gyarados was Confused (again), and he had a powered up Infernape, along with a Typhlosion and an Aerodactyl. After he Flare Blitzed Gyarados, I retreated to sacrifice the Pidgey, which obviously happened. After getting a Pidgey and a Sentret (probably from Roseanne’s), and Flailed his Infernape. He got another ‘Ape powered up, which KO’ed my Gyarados. I got Furret (I think) and ended up getting out Pidgeot (SW). In hindsight, I should’ve got the delta one out instead to stop Typhlosion, which would’ve helped in the end I think. I didn’t, and when Furret was KO’ed, my Whirl-winding antics did 50 to ‘Ape and 50 to Typhlosion, who 2HKOed Pidgeot with Evaporating Heat. I got another Gyarados (MT) out, but no damage on 1 Water on it. Another energy, and I could’ve Enraged (probably Confusing myself again, but still). However, what I could’ve (and probably should’ve done) was attached DRE and went for a Dragon Rage to try and KO it. I didn’t attack at all, and when I KO’ed Typhlosion, he had a powered up ‘Ape, and won the game (I had a Pidgey on the bench, but didn’t have anything else, and he had another Typhlosion powered up).
1-1

We had lunch, and when I got back, I had another game against someone, in which I finally got to Enrage something and not Confuse myself! Onto Round 3, and winning it would assure a top 4 finish.

Round 3: vs. Charlie (GG)
I had a Gyarados (MT) in my hand, along with a Magikarp and a Remoraid in my starting hand. After how useful Remoraid was, and with fighting resistance on Gyarados (MT), I thought a Magikarp start would work. However, a T2 Furret from Charlie, along with 2 energies to Baton Pass KO Magikarp. With that plan out of the window, I went with the Sentret I drew last turn, hoping to Grope and Keen Eye to set up. Without Furret, the latter is hard to do, and Sentret was also Baton Pass KO’ed. I put Remoraid up, which was Psychic Cut by a Gallade he was powering up. I got another Sentret the turn before, and a Furret, so I Keen Eye-ed to try and come back. I did get a Gyarados (MT) out, but without Holon WP, so was Sonic Bladed, and I had to put up a Pidgeot (HP) and use Rotating Claws. After another Sonic Blade, I Flailed, but then, it was too late, with another Gallade set up to Psychic Cut Gyarados, then a lucky top deck of a Plus Power sealed it from a Psychic Cut to win.
1-2

Obviously, I didn’t make top cut. However, there was only a top 2 cut, but there was a third and fourth place play-off as well.
Now, I will mention who did win, with Masters being won by Darryl someone (look, I can’t remember was his name was, so I may have misspelled it), who went undefeated (I think). Seniors was won by Stephen Green, and I think was unbeaten throughout the day. Juniors was again a undefeated winner in the form of Josh Huggard.
After the tournament, I played a few more friendly games and did some trades, getting a Gardevoir Lv.X. Well, you know what they say, if you can’t beat them, join them! Also, I opened a few packs for people, in which I managed to pull some good cards and some error cards for some people. What a great time to get my luck back.

Props:
Nigel for running a great (if short) tournament.
The Answer for being a great deck (better without bad luck).
People trading cards for a mention in this report.
Getting a Gardevoir Lv.X from someone.

Slops:
TOM.
Luck (or lack of).
My mistakes in the Infernape game.
The Confusion side effect of Enrage.

Better luck next time (well, it can’t possibly get worse (and now, I’ve made sure it’s worse now, haven’t I?)).

Congrats on the near miss, and nice to see that Norwich is not quite so metagame stuck as some areas that I could mention (like mine not that I'm helping much by playing Magmortar! :D).

FWIW there should not have been a 3/4 playoff. that bit of the results needs to be excised from the tournament before it is uploaded. Having just got all the UK CCs marked as premiere events it would be a shame to have any cancelled due to procedural errors.

Why slops to TOM?

Also trust me Luck can get diabolically bad at times :(.

Thanks.
The 3/4 play-off was just a fun thing, not a serious play-off, and I don't think it was included anyway.
Oh, I knew there was something I forgot. At the beginning, there were some problems getting the computer/TOM set up, which caused a delay to the whole tournament.
Yeah, I know about luck. I have sink holes of bad luck, followed by a short period (generally only a week maximum) of good luck. Just a shame I couldn't have a good luck thing yesterday.

Oh you want to save all your good luck for nationals... none of the tournaments before then counts in quite the same way ;)

Hm, good point. I'm now hoping all my bad luck is used before then (though, with my luck...). I'm now kind of pleased I didn't have such good luck, but winning all of those packs would've been nice. Oh well, can't do much about it now.

smacktack, my luck will still be able to make that deck lose if I'm in one of those sinkholes, trust me.
Mind you, if luck wasn't a big factor in a deck, then...

Well, I will PM you the ArKaide list ok:) -ADE/-KAI engine so yeah. Also, do you have the link for our newest forums???
