Old player - new energy

My daughter and I have started playing again after taking 5 years off. We are playing with mostly our old cards. However, we do have a few new cards and are not even sure how some of this new stuff works.
1. There is a card called Cherubi that has an attack called Nap. We cannot understand the kind of energy that this attack requires. It looks like a single gray blob (but does not seem to be the same as a colorless)?

2. We have a card called CarniVine that has an attack called Swallup that seems insanely powerful. Are we mis-reading that card?

That would be a symbol indicating that no energy is necessary to perform the attack.

Not sure how you're reading it, but Swallow Up is intended to be used to KO a pokemon that has been reduced to having fewer hp than Carnivine (assuming no hp-boosting effects, like Shaymin Lvl X or Snowpoint Temple.) But, against higher-hp pokemon, it's fairly weak.

1. If there is a little gray blob, that means that attack does not need any energy to use.

2. Swallow Up is an alright attack....

Q #1:
when there is an attack cost represented by no energy, that means that it casts no energy to use.

Q #2:

Carnvine's Swallow Up:

:grass::colorless: Swallow Up
Before doing damage, count the remaining HP of the Defending Pokemon and Carnivine. If the Defending Pokemon has fewer remaining HP than Carnivine's, this attack does 60 damage instead.

this means, that, if carnivine has more HP than the pokemon it is attacking, this attack hits for 60 damage instead of 30. since Carnivine's HP is 70, that it automatically KO's the opponent in most cases.

My daughter played the Carnivine and basically destroyed 6 of my pokemon in 6 turns (none of my guys was bigger than 60). It just seemed insane that it could literally clear the board for 2 energy and one being colorless. Again, we do not have hardly any of the (what I am assuming are bigger HP basic) newer cards.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. We will have to brainstorm if there is any way for us to stop this carnivine with our current cards.

If you are having an issue with Carnivine, the best response is to either quickly evolve/level-up or to reduce Carnivine's hp enough that Swallow Up won't be enhanced by your low hp (by using attacks with only 1 energy, Carnivine's hp can easily be dropped to 40-50 before it gets 2 energy on it.)

Guys dont you see the problem xD ?
Over the years, hit points slowly increased, and so did attack damage. Today a Stage 2 pokemon has mostly 130 HP, and even basics that are just for evolutionary purpose have 60 hp.
Thats why Swallop up isnt that good, but it eats the old cards alive^^(60 HP on a stage 2 ? yeah xD)

If Carnivine really isn't a very powerful card in the current environment, then we really do need to familiarize ourselves with more newer cards. Is there a spreadsheet somewhere online that lists all the cards and the stats/powers for each card that I could download and browse through?

One of my favorite references is right here on the 'Gym. The Researching Tower lists all modified legal cards and if you click on the name is will show you the card and you can read the attacks, etc. You can find it here -> http://pokegym.net/tower/ Also, the official Pokémon Organized Play website has a card dex which is a text listing of all the cards with HP, attacks, etc. It can be found here -> http://www.go-pokemon.com/op/tournaments/card-dex.html
