Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Ontario's Provincial Championship and Pre-Provincials.

Too bad you're judging, I was looking forward to the chance of playing against you Terry. It just doesn't feel like a proper tournament if I don't get to curse someone...

Zach could you please recheck the info on the travel allowance? The dates don't seem right for some reason. Either one or the other is off.

Sean: Don't curse Zach or else you will be forced to play Blazekin at Nationals...
Maybe you can curse Terry in a fun match?

Garret: I will check that out a bit later...

wouldn't you have better understand of the matter considering the information is public, and you're a Global Moderator of the Pokemon world. NOT to mention a PTO?

I find it odd that you'd ask someone of a lower status to do your work...

Sorry, don't think so bud. I suppose you could think that way if it was just a matter of laziness, but that wasn't the case. I already knew his info on the dates was faulty. However, how would that look if I (or someone else) were to correct every faulty bit of info here on the gym. Sure people would get lazy and just say to themselves, "oh no problem, Garret (or someone else) will fix it up," or the original poster would never be able to get a job on a newspaper since they could never get their facts straight. Just because I know the correct info doesn't mean that I'm responsible to correct every mistake. I'm sure Zach understands his responsibility for posting accurate info by now. Thanks for understanding, dragonwarrior.

Wow, have I got some news! I was prepared to make sure everyone walked away with something at our pre-provincial in Barrie on Sunday, but The Ice Box has come forward and stated they will underwrite a great offer for everyone. The price will still be $5 per person, but each and every person who shows up will get a random pack from their stock. And they have quite a selection including Stormfront and Platinum. That's on top of what I was expecting to give out to people for door prizes, and the top 4 tournament prizes! Wow, a lot of stuff is going into the effort for the adopt a champ initiative. Bring a friend everyone, and let's make this a tournament that will be long remembered!

DreamChaserAJ: Thats too bad, I wanted to battle you again after our last epic match. Maybe Regionals???

Garret: I was at the Kozlov mall tonight and met the store owner, it was pretty cool. I am excited for Pre-Provincials and all of the bonuses sound cool too. Don't forget about the trade though:lol: ***reminder*** (Giratina...)

The store seems like a cool place. I won't be able to participate in the tourney because of church, but I will be at the store I think.

You can't get any of the bonuses unless you join in the fun, bud. I'd allow you to join late, but it's your choice.

Zach - play kingdra! LOL J/K.

Well, we had 21 participants in total. However we only had 5 juniors, so we couldn't run the event as age separated. We ran it as best 2 of 3 in swiss, and although the event ran longer, the players didn't seem to mind. Everyone got a free pack, plus some one of a kind items, some even got more than one door prize. Overall it was a success, and over $100 was raised for the adopt a champion initiative. Much appreciated for all the participants. Have a great time at Provincials everyone.

Nice job sir, sorry we couldn't make it (or maybe more precisely I couldn't) darn being south of the Equator and missing it. Well I leave Colombia, Thursday and be back for Provincials. See you there.

I thought I'd just go ahead and ask directly in here;

This is my going to be my first anything event as far as TCG playing goes and I've been busily making a deck and reading over the rules and so on and so forth, but I was wondering what happens aside from the tournament. More specifically, is there free time during a lunch break or something, etc. where people might have time for trades, etc.? I'm thinking of bringing my giant binder of Pokémon cards ever, but I don't want to be stuck carrying around a giant thing of cards if there isn't too much time for trading. And should I even bother bringing cards from pre-DP? Personally I still collect cards from *any* set, but I have an impression that a lot of collectors will simply Ebay something once it's rotated out.

Well first off welcome to your first tourney. Generally the tournaments run pretty much on a constant basis during the day. We might have a short pause for lunch, but given that there's food available at the venue. I wouldn't expect it to be too long. Certainly you don't want to bring too many trading cards with you, especially if you aren't going to have a car where you can stash the stuff. You won't have enough space at your gaming table for a lot of extra stuff. After the Swiss round wraps up, lots of trading usually takes place between the players not making the top cut. Here's a quick list of things not to forget.

> Print out a deck list form from go-pokemon.com or better yet use the deck list creator from the home page of this site (in the upper left corner - 3rd option down) and bring your deck list already done to the tournament

> Bring your 60 card deck, if you are running with sleeves make sure you have a few extras with you as they tend to rip at the most inopportune time.

> Bring your deck in the order of your deck list, I'm not positive but wouldn't be surprised if we will be doing deck checks prior to the start of the tournament

> Bring dice (or counters) + appropriate markers if you plan to use pokemon that can inflict any special conditions, my guess is that we will be enforcing this rule pretty carefully given the size of the tournament

> Bring some cash, there are going to be a whole lot of neat things to buy here and of course there's food too. Given that this is a venue with a food court, I wouldn't be surprised if outside food won't be allowed

See you there.

It is amazing how helpful everyone is on this forum. Thank you so much!

Will I be allowed to have a bag under my seat?

all of those were covered in the rules and stuff that I read up online, I'm more or less fully prepped in this regards.

Dice?
Also oh no I was almost hoping it wouldn't be enforced super-strictly; I basically rummaged together stuff from my theme deck and right now I'm looking at 3 Poison Counters, 3 Burn Counters, and can mark down 260 damage. If I end up unable to mark status/damage beyond those, what would happen? I guess pulling quarters and dimes out would cause too much confusion.

As a judges for the tournament, our first job is to try to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable day. Judges will be more than happy to answer all question you have before the tournament starts (note once the tourney starts we will make rulings not generally answer questions in the interest of fairness to all players). The friendliness of the people who play and organize this game is probably its biggest selling point.

Will I be allowed to have a bag under my seat?
Generally yes. As long as the bag is small enough not to infringe on your neighbours game space. But, having been at enough of these things try to minimize what you bring into the tourney area its a pain to keep track of your stuff and usually distracting to your play.

Dice serve two functions. First they make very good damage counters, a single six-sided dice can represent up to 60 damage. So you only need 4 per Pokemon max. There's a lot less risk that mistakes get made then with counters -- at least IMO. You are of course welcome to use damage counters per the rules, but dice are more the norm with the players in our area.

Secondly they act as good randomizers. Trying to flip coins per the rules is a real trick. To be a real stickler it is good to have dice that are a different colour for randomizing, so they can't be confused after a roll where they displace damage counter dice. Again, you may per the rules flip a coin. but again in this area dice rolling (and please note only 6-sided dice are allowed) is more the norm.

3 Burn and Poison Counters are more then necessary really only one Pokemon can be burned and/or poisoned at the same time.

Hope to see you there in a couple of days.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

OK, 20 minutes and I leave Montelibano Colombia to start my epic journey to the Ontario Provincial Championship. Deck list filling out time here I come! Georgetown confirms 5 Juniors, a volunteer and a Judge.

Ugly Out.
