I think that -- correct me somebody if I'm wrong -- the events that you can sign up for at Origins will be posted sometime late April/early May, and that POP will put up a notice on their website when you can sign up for Nationals. For right now, however, there are only a few events that you can sign up for on the Origins website. So nobody has actually signed up for Nationals just yet, they've only gotten their ticket to Origins.

That's why I haven't pre-reg'd for Origins. Last year when I pre-reg'd, I forgot to sign up for Nats (the only event I was signing up for). When I tried to sign up for Nats seperately, it wouldn't let me do a transaction for $0.00. I'll just register for the con when event registration goes live and I can sign up for Nats and the Prof Cup.
The benefit of the early bird registration (before events are posted) is the discount and the Expose-a-Friend option. Since I signed up early I was able to get full-show badges for my family (3 paid and one child) for $150 and to top that off we each got to expose-a-friend so our neighbors (a mom and 4 boys) are all coming for free! That was a pretty good deal. But we do usually sign up for at least one event other than Pokemon too so I don't have to worry about the $0 transaction.

I had that problem too last year. I ended up emailing the website support person, and they manually added the Nats registration to my badges.
