People who pay inflated prices for cards before release

Why? I don't get it.

I heard about someone paying $120 for a Shiny Rayquaza, and many others paying $90+.
The prerelease promo Altarias are going for $10 on eBay!
Hydreigon and Garchomp are each going for $10 as well!
Several non-FA Mew EXs have gone for $25+!

When I've tried to trade people for their Dragons Exalted stuff, they make me an offer and I'm like "well, that's absurd." But then I look up the current going rates for the cards and it turns out that the deal is even because, apparently, some people are really, really stupid so the prices on new cards are hugely inflated.

Is it because people don't realize that prices fall ~30% upon the set's actual release?
Is it because we live in America and people are insanely impatient?

I can't even blame the people trying to sell a FA Rayquaza EX for like $40, because apparently people are willing to pay that. Help me understand this before I snap.

It is because all us traders here are impatient. I know I am for making trades...
Even though I should be waiting to purchase my FAs and EXs I need for my collection, I casually purchase them sometimes...

I personally am glad I preordered twenty packs from trollandtoad (14 blisters, and 6 packs) since they will be like NV, where everyone values N's at $2 the first month or so, but after that month with trollandtoad's price drop, everything will bomb in value.

That's one of the reasons I left the game after just 1 season (gas is another). Pokemon cost too much. I refuse to pay $50+ for a piece of cardboard.

Haven't you heard? Whoever gets them first wins!
Seriously though, it's crazy! These are the same people that comment "First!" on youtube videos. I just try to ignore sets before they are officially released. Let people pay stupid amounts of money and sit back and watch as they flush their money down the toilet. Be patient and don't let it get to you Politoed!

Well, sometimes it can be because of tournament dates. I'm considering buying some cards earlier because Battle Roads start only two weeks after the set's release.

Yes that is the maximum time to trade and profit
Raikou EX was at $40, I couldn't trade mine in time...

I agree to the battle roads things...
I see it as this, if someone needs a card for a tournament, and usually there is one right after a release, then they trade a bunch, it isn't my fault they need it...

With currently legal cards, people are paying for competative advantage, not for long term value. If value's the goal, then getting cards right as they rotate is the best idea. At that point, all of the non-collectors are emptying out their binders for the new season. The market is flooded with unusable cards, and the prices crash. Then, as time goes on, those cards become harder to find and the price gradually increase. I've seen it happen over and over. It's just plain old economics.

They're only pieces of paper, after all. That makes them worth only as much as someone will pay.

Even with the tournaments coming up you can still use proxies in your deck for practice and get the real cards later.

I don't get it either. I trade away all of my pre-release cards as soon as I can and usually get a killer deal for them.

I paid $10 dollars for a "good" Hydreigon at my league a couple of days ago because it was going to get traded away.

Some people can spend $50+ for a piece of cardboard and others won't/can't.
Welcome to life.

I'll spend $50 on a piece of cardboard, no problem. Rayquaza *? Charizard ex? I'll spend more than that!

Only if the card is actually worth that much, though. This stuff isn't.

Like people charging $30 for registeel EX?
It'll be the new Kyogre in a month

I sold a Registeel ex at the PR for $30 lol

The reason it's so absurd is because the price drop in the period of 2-4 weeks is tremendous. I mean, I can understand paying full price for, say, a PS3 when it came out because you don't want to wait a year or more for the price to drop for you to finally be able to play the games you want. But cards? Like I said, you can use proxies, and you won't have to for long before prices start to stabilize. That's the reason this is so mind boggling.

Then again, we have people who stand in line for days and hours to get the newest iphone or ipad (who are barely different from their previous counterparts anyway) so we see people make poor financial decisions all the time. Shouldn't be surprising.

Exactly, I feel badly talking about people this way, but people are impatient as a whole. I know I am impatient too!
I know as soon as the new set comes out, I have $40 to spend at walmart, as well as having another 20 packs from trollandtoad xD
I could much easier spend the $40 to get all the shinies from the set, besides the stupid Rayquaza or whatever, but I am impatient and try to complete it on my own...

people are very impatient they want ti asap for deck use or collection.look at mewtwo ex back when it was during PR times thing went to over 80 for one.same with darkrai ex went for crazy amounts and now their value dropped down so much its just funny at people paying so much for a cardboard but sad that they dont have the patience to wait about 2-3 weeks till the card set comes out.

The biggest reason their values have dropped so much is because they are releasing tins. If they weren't, I could still see both Regular arts going for $35-$40 easy

If you haven't realized yet, money buys wins. If these new cards are much better than the older cards, people are going to be buying them up and building a deck around them because they know they have the advantage. If you play in a small TCG community, it could be a while before you come across everything you need.

This makes sense except I'm a defeating example.

The number of people who play Pokemon in this area that I know about is literally two. Me and a friend.

But we're testing the heck out of everything we can. No need to buy the cards until we're sure we know what we want to play. Proxies for days, man.

There's no reason to buy the cards at inflated prerelease values, other than impatience.

Kayle is right, you gotta test first before you go and spend X amount of money on something that might lose 70% of its value after 1st week of brs
