hey, im a current high school student living in the east coast region of USA.
i played for 2 years then stopped for 2 years.
im not a beginner but not a super genius either.
best ive done is 3rd at states couple years back 2 years in a row.
i recently got back into the game and now, the same problem i had few years back still bites me.
RIDES.
luckly i live around 5 min away from a city or br place naer my house.
however, my states or other cities/br is far away form my house.
i know couple people but im not close enough with them to ask for a ride or anything
also since im in masters as they are, i dont see why they would give a ride to a competitor
so my concern is, am i the only one having this kind of problem?
i mean, seeing how the rating system is setup, you have to go to almost all the cities/br weekend just to play competitively.
so is there a solution?

or should i just say "thats life" and attend whatever i can?

To play competetively it's pretty important to attend big events. If you are in masters I would try to get a drivers license. You might be able to convince your parents to take you. I don't really have any experience with this, but if you live in a big city you could try to get a cab.

note: please do not turn this into an 'i need a ride/i can give you a ride' thread, as such posts are against the rules of the 'gym...

carry on.

'mom

^ i wasnt planning to as i knew that that is against the rules.
i was askign for advices about how to solve this problem.
thanks for notifying me tho

just get rides from people you sorta know. thats what i did and ive made a ton more friends this way. and gone to like every cities/BR/states/regs. and i havent had to have my parents drive me in a longgggg time :D

My parents have driven me to a total of 2 events. Just get rides from people you know play in your area and are going. You'll really make more friends that way.

develop your social skills and get older masters to drive you. eventually, get a license and return the favor as an older master.

haha that sounds just like me :D. my mom HATES driving me anywhere so its either the bus (idk if you guys have that, in portland we have an awesome buss/MAX system) or i just get rides from one of 8-9 people i know i can count on for rides

You will find that some of your best Pokémon memories have nothing to do with the events themselves. The travel to and from events, overnight stays (if needed), mealtime experiences, people you meet, etc.

I know that I have met some of the greatest people though this game. If I hadn't decided to travel "all the way" to Northern VA back in those days, none of this would have happened. Be persistent, be creative, make it happen!!

Another possibility is convincing your friends who have a driver's license to play.

Don't be one of those weird Pokemon players who is like 21 without a driver's license. I know too many people in that demographic.

My League Leader has offered rides to me and my friends for Premier events; yours might be similarly nice. Just ask around if you really would like to go. :)

I don't think that anyone, at least in my experience/in my community, is going to deny you a ride just because they don't want you to beat them, heh. Maybe if they're not your friend they will, but then why would you want to ride with them anyway?

As for myself, I get a lot of rides places too, although I try to get there on my own, I know that
sometimes it's just not going to happen. But like what was posted above, going to bigger events
(Battle Roads/CC/States/ and so on..) Will help you get more of the right mindset.

As for me as a personal experience, theres a lot fo good players at my league and I just knew
that I would have to find a way to beat them just incase I would end up playing them in a tourney
somewhere. So by playing more experienced players, you'll eventually see what it's like to
play more competitively.
Hoped I helped a little.! ^_^

Cabs are pricey.

Just take the bus or a train if your state has one.

lol cabs busses and trains aren't really options when you're on the west coast and there are 3 or so cities within a 50 mile radius of your house... things are tougher out here!

Hey I find that offensive...wait I'm 22 and can't drive...never mind...nah but seriously I have this great fear of driving...I have ADHD, OCD and ZERO depth perception...my eye doctor told me that I shouldn't be driving period...and yet people keep wanting to teach me...my step-sister learned that lesson after 5 seconds of driving and me almost crashing into another car...

Ummm anyway you could just beg your parents or offer to do some extra chores around the house in exchange for the gas money it would take. I have to bum rides off of people too, I just do all the cooking and the cleaning and then remind my dad every time he gives me a hard time about playing a children's card game...

Start a league near where you live. Build up a player base- A player base that eventually will start carpooling. Perhaps this will get you out of having to drive if you don't like to drive. This worked for some of the folks from the league I go to.
