Time. The merciless testator. Fate’s cruel judge that taunts our feeble cries. Extending far into days that were, ripping away memories from imperfect minds. Reaching far into the future, into tales yet untold, songs yet unsung, tapestries not yet woven. Strings of possibilities tangled up in lives whose decisions slowly, but surely unravel. Days turn into years, years into centuries, centuries into times preserved in bottles. Memories await in the darkness for those who dare to remember…

At the genesis of history, before there was a past, the place that has come to be known as Earth, the blue planet, the mother of all nature, was a cold, lonely, desolate place. The barren wasteland of rock floated through space aimlessly. While still in her infantile state, as seemingly uninhabitable as she was, two living souls appeared. Their existence was perhaps chance; life spontaneously igniting from a chain reaction of innumerable events resulting in a breathing creation. Or perhaps a more divine source was involved; either Earth herself, in her longing and unquenchable desire to progress, produced these two miraculous beings, or an outside force intervened. This question has caused the wise and foolish alike to baffle, guess, and grasp for answers for as long as history has been recorded. It suffices to say two creatures lived during this dark and dreary time.

Though time has buffeted away the more part of the knowledge of these beasts of legend, scholars and dreamers still relate mysterious tales of their intrigue and lore. One who has come to be known as Izanami, the original name having slipped away through the sands of time, held ultimate control over water. No command of Izanami’s element went unfinished. The oceans, the clouds, the rivers, and the lakes all followed orders, from the slightest to the most complex faithfully. Nothing is known as to the full extent of the behemoth of oceans, or even its physical appearance, but this much is known; its powers and abilities surpass that of anything known to man.

The other is commonly called Izanagi. Pulling fact from fable, the same is known of Izanagi as Izanami. Controlling powers of everything that was land, Izanagi had dominion of the continents, the mountains, the plains, and the isles of the sea. The two creatures’ powers rivaled each other to a state of equality. Each one harboring the ability to improve or destroy the Earth on which they dwelt. Such amazing powers have never been seen by the eyes of man. Powers surpassing that of human comprehension seem best to have been kept by nature herself. Yet, nature was not in control. Ultimate power was given to the living creatures thereon.

Greed. Envy. Lust. Hatred. Emotions are mankind’s drives toward peace and war. If emotions were capable of forming inside of Izanami and Izanagi, then such was the case. For reasons unknown the two battled. Never showing signs of peace, exhaustion, nor lack of will the cataclysmic duel ensued. Oceans clashed against dry ground, tearing huge masses of land asunder. Maelstroms of wind, ice, and water marred and bruised the countrysides. Likewise, molten activity beneath Earth’s most secret depths spewed continents from beneath the ocean’s floor, forming mountainous peaks that reached toward the heavens above. Arid deserts forced moisture to flee away or forever hide beneath the sand’s thick shells. All forces of nature were violently wielded toward the end of one trying to overwhelm the other. That end never came.

Eon’s ensued and Earth’s face was reshaped an uncountable number of times. It seemed that this cycle was to continue for all eternity unless something were to intervene. This event – like so many others – proved that nothing lasts forever. As miraculous and unexplainable as the appearance of Izanagi and Izanami, two new lives came into being. These twin dragons held views and morals opposed to those held by the warring beasts with whom they shared the planet. Yama and Yami they are called. Siblings, brother and sister, sharing a bond that shaped their view of how life should be. War, aggression, and dominance were evils in their opinion. The struggle for control that they witnessed displeased them.

Try as they might, diplomacy did not quell the rage of Izanami and Izanagi. The powers of the lords of land and sea were too vast and all-encompassing for Yama and Yami to subdue passively. Despite the contradiction in belief, they were forced to take a more offensive stance on the matter. If ever an end justified the means of an action, it was then. Using all the power that they possessed the dragons paralyzed Izanagi and Izanami. Abilities as amazing as the seismic and undulating ones of the warring beasts were held by Yama and Yami, but at a price. The price was their lives. The sedating effects required a counter force to the lives of the warmongers. By sacrificing their selves and changing their bodies from the regal dragons they were into small orbs, nature’s perfect form, their grandest ability was unlocked.

Overcome by fatigue, a state of being they had never before felt, Izanagi and Izanami fell dormant. Hypnosis, nervous block, coma. The exact reasons behind the slumber were unclear and remain so today. Somehow the aura of the crimson sphere of Yami caused Izanami to grow drowsy to the point of forced unconsciousness as the power emanating from the azure ball that was Yama made Izanagi fall faint. They lay slumbering still, forever to remain so as long as the orbs lay atop the mountain of spirits.

Time passed by, but not for long, for while the ashes of the behemoths’ monstrous battle were yet aglow life stirred into being...
