Pokegym Fantasy NFL Football 2009 -- Week 7

It's only week 1, so I'm not too worried. Few of my players had subpar weeks, so hopefully they'll be bouncing back in the near future and I can put a few more points on the board.

that was the worst game of my life i woke up 2 late and my #1 QB didnt play and there was notthing i could

do about it and just terrible luck all my running backs were mediocore

Yeah, I'm a bit miffed that my players got injured and couldn't play. Seriously, I only had one guy injured before I left my choices alone and then I come back on monday and see three injured guys. I also gambled on running Favre over my other QB. It didn't pay off. Bah...

I fixed it for Week 2, so things should be fixed by then. I hope...

Gah, disappointing loss is disappointing...

now, for Pokegym2...

There's something of a secondary competition going on here between Fuzzy and RA over who can make the most Waiver moves in a season. Fuzzy's winning, but just barely.

First our Game of the Week. EP barely beat out RA, even though RA would've beaten everybody but 2 players this week. RA seems to have a talent for finding good Flex players, scoring over 25 points just from the two flex spots. His IDP was also impressive, scoring another 26 points there. All told, almost half of RA's points came from positions that are usually glossed over (Flex, Kicker, Defense, and IDP). EP countered RA's consistency with basically raw power, capitalizing on strong QB, WR1, and TE play, as well as pretty decent IDP, to pull ahead by a mere 7 points.

Fuzzy used his first overall pick very nicely, picking up 28 points on Adrian Peterson alone. Unfortunately, nobody else on his roster did much of anything this past week. AP scored almost a third of Fuzzy's points by himself. Xatu countered with Drew Brees, which (as I noted in my last post) was basically an auto-win this past week. 42 points is incredible in this format. Needless to day, Brees beat out Peterson for the top spot this week.

PoliPwned's first pick of Devin Hester didn't look so crazy this week. However, the rest of his team performed to expectations; which is to say, very average. Woo took a chance with Hasselbeck, even against StLouis, and it paid off tremendously. Still, this was a battle of two average teams, with Woo winning by 9 points.

Seahawks were ravaged by players severely underperforming in their opening game. Only Derrick Ward out of his skill position players surpassed his Yahoo Projected points total. Everybody else was around 25-50% off their projections. All the Donks really needed against that was the projected points total for each of his players. Philly was dominant in their first game, netting the Donks 29 points and virtually securing the game right there.

If the Seahawks were ravaged by underperforming, I had it even worse. I spent my first 3 picks on Forte, Jacobs, and Portis, knowing that these were three of the most consistently high scoring options in the NFL right now. Not to mention that they fell as far as they did was a miracle in and of itself (Portis in the third?!?) They scored 14 points. Total. And then I started two other Chicago players that netted me less than 4 points total. And then I started Anthony Gonzalez, who succumbed to a feather and is unlikely to do anything the rest of the season. Bliz, on the other hand, had a fantastic start, with 8 of his 12 players scoring in double digits, most of them well above their projections. That was all he needed to bring me down.

And now for the WTH matchup of the week. Neither team performed particularly well, both starting players who were either injured or suspended. Both chose terrible IDPs. Their skill positions were pretty decent, but not enough to overcome completely neglecting their roster positions. GoColts beat the Packers in quite possibly the most underwhelming 6 point victory EVER.

He said the "WTH" matchup of the week.... AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAHAa

My opponent (elipsis) had T.Brady who scored two of his TDs in last 3 mins of game. Miraculous win there. If you're gonna lose, that's how you lose... with excitement!
GJ Elipsis.

Hey Bully, your LINK IS BROKEN in your sig. The champaign league one...

Should be noted that although I almost scored my "projected points", my entire offense scored a combined 1 TD and I still scored over 100.

Sadly the majority of my roster did very subpar, AND McNabb hurt himself, so I have to play Brady Quinn, who hopefully will start even with his rocky performance vs. Minnesota

OK, let's get Week 2 started round here...

Nice to see that everybody's at least somewhat active in this League. I've been in PLENTY of leagues (including last year's) where people just didn't do anything, including show up for the draft. RA still leads the world in roster moves here.

In the Whitewash Of The Week, Xatu started 6 players in double figures, 3 of which went for 20+, including one each QB, WR, and RB. This is one of the most balanced teams I've seen in FF in a long time, and it just looks to keep doing its thing with Frank Gore playing against the woeful NFC West. Kevin Kolb was a tremendous pickup midweek, going for 16 points in garbage time against the powerful Saints. Bliz didn't have a terrible week, going for 113 with 4 players in double figures, but Xatu's 170 points were just too much to handle.

The Game Of the Week was most definitely RogueArchetype against STC. RA had a fairly comfortable 12+ point lead going into the Monday Night game with STC having only one player spot left to fill. He filled it quite nicely with Ronnie Brown going for 18+, sealing the game. Outside of Leftwich, none of RA's guys really performed exceptionally, but he got good consistency across the board. STC countered with 8 different players in double digits. Even with his relative lack of consistency across the board (4 with < 5), that was enough for STC to take this. Oh yeah. My Bonehead Move of the Week award goes to RA here for dropping (DROPPING) Matt Schaub after his debacle last week. Ya know what he did this week, RA? 300+ with 4 scores. You're gonna miss that scoring, buddy!

The "Why Can't Both Teams Win" game was between myself and EllipsisPoint. EP had 8 different players scoring double digits, though none of them broke te 20 mark. He also had 4 players, including both IDPs, go for less than 5 points. Peyton Manning made this interesting with his stellar work on Monday Night, but my QBs were simply superior this week. Drew Brees is a BEAST, and Jay Cutler made a nice comeback from his debacle last week. I had 9 players scoring double digits, but 4 got less than 5, including all 3 of my Patchwork Plug&Play Wideouts (Marshall, Gage, and Bruce). Dude? Go out and actually look at the IDPs. They win games. They basically got me through to 2nd and 3rd last year. Needless to say, I award the Pickup of the Week to myself, even though I didn't use it this week. Matt Schaub is a fantasy STUD, and I was lucky to pick the guy up after RA dropped him.

WooWooWoo and GoColts! had very similar weeks. Both had tremendous highs and devastating lows. W3 had 5 players in double digits, with 2 over 20 and one very close. However, he also started 6 duds this week, two of which went for 1 point or less. Colts matched with 5 players in double digits, starting this week's stud Chris Johnson and his 36 points. However, he also had 5 duds, including three gooseggs. If he'd've gotten any kind of reasonable production out of those gooseggs, he'd've had a chance in this match. W3 won by 10 points.

Ninja Strike! had one of the most miserable fantasy weeks I've ever seen in this league. His best player (Tom Brady) was a complete dud. He had no reasonable QB2. He had 8 duds with no real bench help. Oh, BTW? Why bench two IDPs? They're good, but they're essentially Plug&Play. Needless to say, Injury Reserve needed very little to take this game. Philip Rivers 19 points and just a little bit of consistency behind him was enough to take this one. 5 players in double digits with only 4 duds makes this matchup relatively easy.

Thoughts? Analysis?

Oh, BTW, Schaub, Cutler, or Russel are all available for an RB1 or WR1. Legitimate, mind you. Tier 1-2 stuff.

LOLing at The_Knee's sig !!!

I don't know WHAT to do about my team. They keep getting 100+ an losing every week!

I'm just hoping to, miraculously, make the playoffs and get a clean slate there!

RA, I keep tellin you this. 100 points in PG1 isn't a big deal. There have been 5 total sub-100 point totals this season. If you're looking for a good threshold to reach, talk to me about your 120-125 point games. There have been 14 totals of 125 or more, and 12 of those have been winners. Also, look at the averages. Through four weeks, only one team in PG1 has averaged under 100 points a week (Bliz). Everybody else is 100 or better (I'm at 148, the highest in the league). Your current average is 120, good for 7th overall out of 10 players.

Remember that PG1 has more QBs than normal, more defenses than normal, and the IDPs add to the scoring.

Also remember that the Playoffs are 6 teams. You'll only have to get .500 or better to make the playoffs.

PG2, even with the IDPs, still has 100 as the threshold b/c there are fewer WRs and the points are skewed downward slightly.

You might also do a little bit better by, idk, NOT completely overhauling your roster every single week. In PG1, you've made the most moves. In PG2, you're ranked second there. I'm not saying "don't make moves". More along the lines of "don't make too many moves". I move a LOT. Through 4 weeks, my lowest number of moves is 10 in my two Public accounts. In every League outside of PG1 and PG2 (not counting ESPN right now), I'm in the top 3 in moves every single year. And I've *never* made 28 moves through 4 weeks. You've overhauled your roster twice over in both Leagues. Let them settle a little bit. in PG1, you're the person who dropped tier 1 and tier two players like Felix Jones, Brent Celek, Barrett Rudd (excellent IDP), and Matt Schaub (thx). You dropped useful timeshares like Leon Washington, Muhsin Muhammad, Lance Moore, LeSean McCoy, Mark Bradley (he will recover), Jonathan Stewart, and Patrick Crayton. You've dropped more QBs (5) than 3 players in the League have made roster MOVES. You have a FANTASTIC team, but tend to sit the players that perform the best. Just calm down a little bit. Let the game come to you, and you'll be just fine.

lol ... i'm having fun :)

The moves are fun.

I'm just making conversation man.

I'll come out knock a few down... you'll see :)

I don't think I've even looked at the ESPN league... lol

I tend to disagree Bullados.... moves are fun but also needed. I have had so many ?? players.. I mean Osi pitched a 0.. are you serious!! I have the most in PG2 and have a 2-2 record. Along the way I picked up some backups that are now go-tos and dropped starters that have underperformed. My 2 losses... well, Brees just went nuts W1.. adn the other were because of blanks on 2 players!

I will be making more moves... and see where it goes. If your team isn't working.. sell it!!

There's a large difference between making necessary moves and making moves for the sake of making moves. I've made between 10 and 15 moves thus far in every one of my Leagues, and my worst record is 2-2. however, 28 or 30 moves through 4 weeks is simply excessive, IMO. Why would you need to completely overhaul your roster every two weeks (on average)? I tweak my roster here and there, pick up some good speculation, dump guys that aren't performing the way they should, find some Bye week material from the depths of hell, and I'm doing quite fine right now (I'm actually the points leader in PG1 and the ESPN league).

Having made the second most moves in PG1, i completely agree with what Bullados said above. I think i've made 17 through two weeks, but since I autodrafted, it's not unreasonable for a week 1 small overhaul to my liking. Otherwise, it boils down to speculation and luck, but you shouldn't just abandon your core. The longer the season goes on, the more likely they are to return to their level you expected.
