I think this league is a prime example of why head to head is such a brutal form of scoring. The highest point total in the league is currently in second place. The second highest is in 5th. The forth highest is in 6th. This is why good managers really have to be diligent with their rosters and understand their opponents and make the appropriate moves to win their games. Notice that each of the top four teams here have double digit moves made, and that none of them have made more than 25 total moves through 8 weeks. Making moves is important, but not to the point where you're overhauling your entire roster every single week (RA, I'm lookin at you).
Game Of the Week
Lovie's Stern Mind, probably the most dangerous team in the League (though IMO not the best), was in a pretty good position going into the weekend. The team was firing on all cylinders, getting double digit scoring from almost every position. A late scratch on a valuable IDP, though, probably broke the week. As is tradition with this team, the QBs led the way, scoring the 1st and 2nd most points on the team with 19 and 17 respectively out of Brees and Schaub. Through the early games, though, WooWooWoo had a decided advantage, racking up an impressive point total behind Aaron Rodgers and the San Diego defense. Only Massaquoi really disappointed.
Then came the night, and LSM made an impressive comeback attempt. Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks combined for over 18 points, drawing the deficit to within a manageable 10 going into a Monday game between two old rivals. Both teams had 2 players going. LSM made the comment that he needed Clinton Portis to run for 200 yards and the Philly defense to have 3 pick-sixes to have a chance. Well, one of those came true. Philly had 6 sacks, 3 fumbles, a pick and a score to lead all of LSM's scorers for the week. Portis, once again, disappointed. However, it wasn't enough as WWW's DeSean Jackson pounded away for 19 points, sealing the 5.5 point win. This is the value of IDPs, people. If LSM had managed to replace his injured IDP with any one of a dozen players, he would have won the week fairly easily.
Blowout of the Week
In a battle between one of the strongest lineups in the League and one of the smartest owners, it was no contest. The stronger players won out. Xatu fielded a rather scrappy field of players headed by the epitome of hot/Cold, Carson Palmer, and one of Fantasy's elder statesmen, LT2. Several players on the team scored in double digits, with Carson leading the way with 34 points. However, a QB2 not known for his high outputs and a defense known more for breaking than stopping really did this team in. 8 players scored under 5 points, with 3 scoring under a point.
Go Colts! countered with a lineup of solid but unspectacular players from a fantasy standpoint. Players that are known for constantly getting decent numbers, but never really breaking out into the upper echelons of fantasy scoring. Tony Romo, Wes Welker, and the Dallas defense were the only players to score over 10 points, but both Tony and Wes went well beyond that. In contrast to Xatu's team, only two players on GC! scored under 5 points, and both had relatively successful games over 4 points.
The Rest
Injury Reserve continues his streak of solid, winning play with a win over the most active owner in the league, RogueArchetype Pawns. IR had both spectacular highs and spectacular lows in this week, with 5 players in double digits and 8 players under 5 points. But, ultimately, those highs won him out against RAP, who started a QB that was pulled at halftime, and forgot (on purpose?) to start a 2nd Defense. RAP had similar lows to IR, with 6 positions scoring under 5 points, but didn't have anywhere near the highs, with only 3 players at double digits.
The two highest scorers of the week met in a single game where neither team should have really lost. Yet another weird thing about H2H as a fantasy format, weird stuff like this happens all the time. Ninja Strike had simply insane consistency from all his players, getting 7 players in double digits and only 2 under 5 points. Ellipsis point countered with some very high scoring players, 5 in double digits and 3 of those over 20 points. However, he had simply too many low men on the totem pole to pull this out, with 6 players under 5 points. Still, 143 points is nothing to sneeze at, and if he had replaced Sammy Morris in the starting lineup, he might have gotten pretty close in this game.
And finally, a matchup between the two lowest scoring teams in this league, and neither did much to help their cause. Bliz started one player on Bye, while STC started three. The result should be quite obvious just from that statement. Both players had some incredible performances from the players that actually played, Bliz with 8 players in double figures and STC with 5. But forgetting to find Bye week replacements will cost both teams in the long run. Bliz is the lowest scoring team in the league right now, and STC is second lowest. Both have pretty good teams that have just had some rotten luck.
I'll be back with some PG2 standings later.
