I won't lie, I don't get that...anyone care to explain the origins of rainbow cats floating across the screen?

It would be kind of shweet to see Smeargle running across the screen leaving a rainbow trial behind using his paint brush tail...........

Internet History, Year 1: Nyan Cat

On July 25 2010, a video called "Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!" was uploaded by the user "daniwell" to Nico Nico Douga (basically the Japanese equivalent of YouTube). This is a mirror of the video on YouTube. I'm sure at least some of you will recognize the singing voice in the video as the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku. After that, on January 31 2011, the user "Momo Momo" re-created the video using the singing synthesizer UTAU - and the result was this.

On April 2 2011, Christopher Torres aka "prguitarman" posted an animated gif named "Poptart Cat" to his website LOL-Comics. The picture (and later, animated gif) apparently originated from a live stream he did to raise money for the Red Cross, where two different people suggest he draw a "Pop Tart" and a "cat". This resulted in him drawing a hybrid of a Pop-tart and a cat, naming it Poptart Cat.

And then, on April 5 2011, the YouTube user "saraj00n" combined these two things into one video, Nyan Cat. Which turned into all of these wonderful parodies/iPhone games/remixes/whatever.

So there you go!

Now, to actually go on-topic: woo, bookmarklets are always fun. And go try the Katamari one that cabd linked to; it's sapped up way too much of my free time lately.
