Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Pokemon Executive CaC-Results announced

Deadline is here, and...

Both teams have impressed me in two totally different ways.

While I will say outright that Team GLEC's cards are TOTALLY superior, Team Pay Day is a much more impressive team, actually working together and doing it quite well. I feel like Team GLEC was totally disorganized this round and I'm disappointed to that effect.

Also, Team GLEC did not make the team card, subtracting even more from their score.

charmander rox:You have the best card. It's a concept perfect for Ampharos to pull off with fair attacks, and you know how I am about good ol Amohy. I do however insist that the first attack's effect, while neat, is a bit odd.

greenzangoose:Another excellent card that represents Alakazam rather well. I'm fairly fond of Zam, but not too much, I suppose you surmised it from my Kadabra makings.

Lucario EX:Ah jeez. You picked a fave Pokemon, but the execution isn't so great. For starters it's totally unbelievably broken and I also don't know why you chose Galactic's, since Mew has little to do with that group. It had good intentions behind it though.

ensignmerlin:This is a pretty cool card, though I felt that the attack was more Mew appropriate. Good card though regardless.I wish it had another attack though, that one isnt too reliable, though it can be powerful.

No team card to grade here.

I'll post my comments on Team Pay Day and the result later today.

I just wanted to explain that we weren't disorganized at all. We were communicating over PM instead, so Team Payday couldn't just read our thread and figure out what to do.

Thank you for stepping forward about that. However, teamwork is a part of grading in the graded parts of this contest. THEN, I will require you to talk in the thread. Of course, you can still do it anyway. I am working on an honor system here. But if I see little to no discussion, I have to assume....well, anyway, results in a few minutes...

Am I going to be needed for judging?

Your judging begins starting next round friend.

Team Pay Day

meditite rox:Gosh man., I saw the Poliwrath and the picture and got all excited, then read the power and frowned, then read the second attack and frowned again. It's just a thoroughly bad card to be perfectly honest, especially because it's effective against so few Pokemon, what with the Energy costs being what they are these days. It couold have been cool if it werent for the high energy bit on Swirl and the low damage on the steep drawback for the second attack.

Godzfirely:Another great Pokemon choice with bad execution. Golduck doesn't really have much to do with synchronozation, would have been better on an Alakazam or something else that actually has Synchrozize. The first attack is mildly interetsing for its early disruption, but the second attack is bizarrely worse than the existing Golduck in the format, which is bad to begin with.

Wally:It seems you were trying too hard to make it not broken. It's just a bad card again, virtually useless.without the energy cost limit, it could have given Fire the protection it needs from Water--but that and the uninteresting attacks just aren't doing it.

GlaceonFTW:A strange example. This card is good conceptually and looks quite promising, but is SEVERELY lacking in flavor for the attacks, which are really.......bland.Rest's side effect is kind of ew too.

Team card:I'm not even sure how to judge this. It's a flawed concept simply because Venomoth doesnt have the HP to pull it off right. I don't have much more to say than this.

I'm going to have to give the win to Team GLEC here. Congrats. You win-

Late Pass-Declaring a Late Pass allows you to work on your cards for an extra 3 days. The leader decides when to use this.

The first official round with its explanation will be posted soon.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

Welcome to ROUND ONE Pokemon CAC'S EXECUTIVE APPRENTICE.

Say you have been contracted by a Health causes organization of some sort. They want to go to schools and teach children that smoking, eating poorly, drinking, illegal drugs, etc, are all poor choices. The get kids' attention, they want a promotional card to hand out to children who write a Pledge to stay healthy and active. The cards will be available secondarily by making a small donation to any League Leader or over the web. All proceeds in those cases would go to hospitals for children. Both teams will attempt to make cards representing this cause. Make the card, prove a picture or picture description and some health tip Fkavor text, unless it's a trainer, and don't do anything silly, like a Toothpaste trainer. Remember, you are promoting good health to children! The cards do not need to be bad or simple, and I do not encourage that.

Here is the grading rubric for this round.

CARD MECHANICS AND CONCEPT [30/30] How good is the concept of the card? Is it original, or does it fit in with the Pokemon usual role?
CARD EXECUTION AND BALANCE [20/20] Is the card too strong? Too weak? Is the concept executed well?
FLAVOR AND PICTURE [20/20] Is the style of the card consistant with the Pokemon, Trainer, item, etc,? Is the picture and flavor interesting and descriptive?
GRAMMAR AND SPELLING [15/15] Is the grammar and spelling proper? Are ophrase worded as they are supposed to be?
JOB CONSISTENCY [15/15] Does this card fit the assignment?

20 points will be subtracted individually for late submissions. Minus 10 points across the board for a lack of teamwork in your thread.

You will be graded by both me and NidoPrince. The losing team will meet us in this topic, where one of your team will be fired. The winning team with receive an in game power and another prize. Good luck.

YOUR CARDS ARE DUE BY MAY 16.

It is possible that I'm missing it, but I read the Challenge 3 times and can't seem to tell how many cards we're expected to make? Is it to be decided by us (like one card to give out at schools and X cards to be given at Leagues) or did you mean to give us a set number of cards to make?

Thank you. *Takes Late Pass and pockets it*

That was our plan, at the beginning of the task I told the team to only send PM's to one another and not post anything but a card just in order to keep the other team from simply copying our ideas of what you like and to make it seem like we where disorganized. It seems like it worked pretty well if you even thought we where disorganized. You should see plenty of activity in our threads during this assignment.

Quick question, does the late pass extend the time for both teams or just one team? Thanks.

JUDGING BEGINS NOW

NidoPrince, please begin judging when you can and send me your thoughts. Be sure to use the score sheet.

MY JUDGING:

Godzfirefly's Hitmonchan Lv. 38!

CARD MECHANICS AND CONCEPT [19/30]The card's concept is pretty cool. It's not good enough to be used competitvely but still a cool card. Fitness Buff is fair as well as everything else. It's also fitting with his general role, which is always a bonus.
CARD EXECUTION AND BALANCE [12/20] It's very fair card, that could be printed instantly.I knocked you off 2 points for a double Psychic weakness which is a bit too much and it didn't get that high, simply because it didn't do anything, creatively.
FLAVOR AND PICTURE [20/20] Clear pictures and good comparisons to show his fitness! I love this, full marks.
GRAMMAR AND SPELLING [15/15] Everything checks out. Full marks.
JOB CONSISTENCY [13/15] While it does it's job, it doesn't quite sell it with a 'Practiced Uppercut',which has more to do with martial arts than actual fitness.Small mistake, this is an overall excellent card!

79/100

meditite rox's Tropius Lv.30!

CARD MECHANICS AND CONCEPT [25/30] A Tropius all about healing through healthy activity, but not destroyed in use by a cool attack to balance it out. Tropical Storm also arguably works together with the Fruitful power.
CARD EXECUTION AND BALANCE [17/20]Well balanced, Can hit high as needed, accelerate, this card is really cool and give Tropius a fighting chance as a viable Pokemon! Good show! Only nitpick is the lower retreat cost. Tropius actually isn't very speedy, and the manner of the card suggests bulkiness anyway....10 more HP and an extra retreat cost is an order.
FLAVOR AND PICTURE [14/20] Aw jeez. This might seem like nitpicking but....I'm not sure Mankey can smile. He doesn't seem to have a mouth ya know? I'm unsure. But in concept it's sound and pretty cute. The flavor is OK, though it says less about Tropius and more about fruit.
GRAMMAR AND SPELLING [15/15]Checks out.
JOB CONSISTENCY [15/15] Well done, full marks. I DO hate to give out such a high score this early in the game...

86/100

wally's Linoone Lv. 30!

CARD MECHANICS AND CONCEPT [20/30] One I don't think I thought of. It pretty much fits Linoone,no problems there. Benefits to being efficient, recycling,it's all good here.
CARD EXECUTION AND BALANCE [6/20] Aw jeez man. Trash Recycle is cool and all and pretty well balance but, my god,is Tidy Benefit broken. Even discarding 3 cards doesn't matter. Thanks to Claydol the hand is totally replenishable and being able to hit 100 left and right wherever you want is madness.
FLAVOR AND PICTURE [16/20]Very cute, makes it seem nice. Kinda wish the picture was outside.
GRAMMAR AND SPELLING [12/15] Small mistake on the order of the power clauses.
JOB CONSISTENCY [10/15] I hadn't reall mentioned cleanliness but I guess it's a nice thought.

64/100

Lucario EX's Medicham NJ Lv. 31!

CARD MECHANICS AND CONCEPT [13/30] It doesn't feel...well thought out. Undeniably simple and a little on the side of not making much sense with Nurse Joy. Excercising makign WHATEVER is active do more damage doesn't make much sense either.
CARD EXECUTION AND BALANCE [6/20]Hitting 1 for 50 is pretty hot as it is, but adding 20 to anything? This would be a 1 of tech where ever it could fit.
FLAVOR AND PICTURE [18/20]Well executed and unfortunately the best part of this card.
GRAMMAR AND SPELLING [15/15]Checks out.
JOB CONSISTENCY [13/15] Consistent, but not very creative.

65/100

greenzangoose's Arcanine H Lv. 37!

CARD MECHANICS AND CONCEPT [15/30]This is really plain and only promotes health in the faintest sense. Power feels like it should be a body, and kind of broken. The concept of a speedy Pokemon with low HP and 2 retreat cost is....maddening.
CARD EXECUTION AND BALANCE [0/20] Broken. In a lot of senses.
FLAVOR AND PICTURE [5/20]Not very descriptive.
GRAMMAR AND SPELLING [8/15] Missing capitalizations, incorrect spotrophe placements, etc.
JOB CONSISTENCY [9/15] It sort of fits but doesn't do much promotion.

37/100

ensignmerlin's Blissey H Lv. 23!

CARD MECHANICS AND CONCEPT [2/30] I-I don't know what to say here. The attack makes no sense and the body is outclassed by Zangoose of all things. Also lack of double weakness again.
CARD EXECUTION AND BALANCE [2/20] I barely know what this card does, but what I understand fromt he attacks makes it broken.
FLAVOR AND PICTURE [0/20]No flavor here.
GRAMMAR AND SPELLING [9/15] Various small mistakes.
JOB CONSISTENCY [10/15] This seems to be promoting the idea of health over BECOMING healthy or MAINTAINING it.

23/100

charmander rox's Alakazam SN Lv. 43!

CARD MECHANICS AND CONCEPT [20/30] In concept it's great though it has problems with cards that don't list statistics like Height and Weight.
CARD EXECUTION AND BALANCE [12/20] Power drawback might be too heavy and cost maybe should be [P][C] to allow for Energy Gain.Overall balanced.
FLAVOR AND PICTURE [16/20]Very smart.I can also imagine a pair of glasses. :]
GRAMMAR AND SPELLING [15/15] Seems clean.
JOB CONSISTENCY [11/15]I guess in a sense studying and brain excercise is like, in the area, but it's not exactly what was in mind. Still, good job.

74/100

NIDOPRINCE'S JUDGING:

Hitmonchan Lv. 38 -80HP- [F]
Basic Pokémon
Picture: A Hitmonchan in the foreground is in a gym delivering swift blows to a heavy punching bag that is reeling away from the blows. In the background are a few Machoke lifting barbells, two Lucario racing on a track and a lazy Snorlax leaning against a wall watching with half-open eyes with a Pichu bouncing on Snorlax's belly like a trampoline.

[Poké-Body] Fitness Buff
Hitmonchan can't be affected by any Special Conditions.

[F] Knock Back 10
Your opponent switches the Defending Pokémon with 1 of his or her Benched Pokémon, if any.

[F][F][C] Practiced Uppercut 60
Apply the Defending Pokémon's Weakness, if any, to this attack.

Flavor Text: Hitmonchan knows that regular exercise gives it an edge against lazier Pokémon.

W- [P]x2
R-
RC- [C]

Card Mechanics and Concept: 30/30. Very Nice. I like the Practiced Uppercut. It's quite innovative.
Card Execution and Balance: 19/20. My only qualm is the 80 HP. That plus no special conditions built in is a little broken...
Flavor and Picture: 20/20. Very nice. I can see this card in my mind.
Grammar and Spelling: 15/15. Perfect!
Job Consistancy: 15/15. Awesome. Maybe I should start exercising to not end up like the Snorlax mentioned... XD.

Total: 99/100

Tropius LV.30 HP80 [G]
BASIC

There is a Tropius standing in a forest, and a Mankey is sitting on its back, holding a banana to the frame. Both are smiling. The banana is unpeeled, and it appears Mankey has taken a bite and enjoyed it.

[Poké-POWER] Fruitful
Once during your turn (before you attack), if Tropius is on your Bench, you may discard 1 card from your hand and flip a coin. If heads, search your discard pile for 1 basic [G] Energy card and attach it to your Active Pokémon.

[.] Rest
Remove all Special Conditions and 3 damage counters from Tropius. Tropius is now Asleep.

[G][C] Tropical Storm 20+
Does 20 damage plus 10 more damage for each basic [G] Energy card attached to each of your Benched Pokémon.

Fruits, such as the bananas on the neck of TROPIUS are high in water, fiber, vitamin C.

W:[R]+20
R:[F]-20
RC:[C]

Card Mechanics and Concept: 26/30. I like the card, but the attacks are slightly overused.
Card Execution and Balance: 17/20. The power seems underpowered...
Flavor and Picture: 20/20. Very Good!
Grammar and Spelling: 15/15. Perfect!
Job Consistency: 11/15. Though it does represent healthy eating, the card doesn't quite reflect the topic.

Total: 90/100

Linoone Lv. 30 90 HP [C]
Stage 1 - Evolves from Zigzagoon.

Pic : A few smashed cans lay in a messy living room, a Linoone is picking one of the cans up and a few Zigzagoon are helping the Linoone. A Plusle and Minun is carrying a trash can full of rubbish through the glass door of the living room.

Poké-Power : Trash Recycle
Once during your turn (before you attack), you may search your discard pile for a card and put it in your hand. You can't use more than 1 Trash Recycle Poké-Power each turn. You can't use this power if Linoone is affected by a Special Condition or if you have more than 6 cards in your hand.

[C][C][C] Tidy Benefit
You may discard up to 3 cards from your hand. Choose 1 of your opponent's Pokémon, this attack does 40 damage plus 20 more damage to the chosen Pokémon for each card discarded in this way (Don't apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon).

W - [F] +20
R - [-]
RC - [C]

Linoone always keeps its environment clean so that it can stay away from harmful disease.

Card Mechanics and Concept: 30/30. I like the Reverse Quick Search.
Card Execution and Balance: 14/20. I would have prefered 80 HP for a searcher...
Flavor and Picture: 17/20. The flavor and picture are too topic-based.
Grammar and Spelling: 15/15. Perfect!
Job Consistency: 14/15. REcycling is good, but the card is a little too pro-Green.

Total: 89/100

GlaceonFTW - No card. 0/100

Lucario EX:

Medicham NJ Lv. 31 100 HP
(F) Basic
SP: Nurse Joy's Pokémon.

Picture: Shows a Medicham doing pushups. The core of an apple is on the ground. The background is a forest, with a few rays of sunlight shining through the trees. The picture is in a simple, cartoon-like style.

PokéPower Exercise
Once during your turn (before your attack), you may use this power. Until the end of your turn, your Active Pokémon's attacks do 20 more damage. This power can't be used if Medicham NJ is affected by a Special Condition. You can't use more than 1 Exercise PokéPower per turn.

(F)(C) Rapid Punch 30

By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, Medicham gained amazing power.

Weakness (P)x2 Resistance 0 Retreat Cost (C)

Card Mechanics and Concept: 30/30. It does fit all the criteria here.
Card Execution and Balance: 8/20. Exercise is ridiculous with the RR Nidoking. all of your attacks would be doing auto +40.... A tad broken in my opinion.... 100 on a basic is too much as well.
Flavor and Picture: 20/20 The picture and flavor text work.
Grammar and Spelling: 15/15 No errors.
Job Consistency: 15/15 It fits the theme.

Total: 88/100

GreenZangoose:

Acranine H Lv.37 70HP (R)
[Arcanine is moving forward so fast that the area around him is simply a blur of trees.]
Basic Pokémon (Health Pokémon)
(Triathlete's Arcanine)
Poké-Power: Extreme Speed
Once during your turn (before you attack), when Arcanine H becomes your Active Pokémon from being Benched, you may put 3 damage counters on the Defending Pokémon.
(F)(F)(C) Flash Fire 40
After doing damage, switch Arcanine H with 1 of your benched pokémon
(Lot's of running has turned Arcanine into one of the fastest Pokémon.)
Weakness: (W) +30
Resistance: None
Retreat Cost: (C)(C)

Card Mechanics and Concept: 20/30. It really don't see the theme here. Extremespeed is a little vague on the health bit.
Card Execution and Balance: 5/20. Extremespeed is broken. Putting 3 damage counters on the defending pokemon every turn is a little broken.
Flavor and Picture: 16/20. The picture could've used a little more description.
Grammar and Spelling: 8/15. Acranine should be Arcanine. Lot's should be Lots.
Job Consistency: 6/15. I don't really see a Healthy theme here.

Total: 55/100

EnsignMerlin:

Blissey H Lv.23 110HP [C]

Basic Pokémon
(Health Pokémon)

PokéBody: Strong Immunity.
If Chansey H is affected by a special condition you may flip a coin. If heads, remove that special condtition. You can only use this effect once per turn.

[C][C] Intensive Care
If Chansey H has more HP remaining than the Defending Pokémon and is affected by fewer special conditions, shuffle the Defending Pokémon into your opponent's deck.
__________________________
Weakness:[F]+20
Resistance:
Retreat Cost:[C][C]

Card Mechanics and Concept: 24/30. Blissey usually has a healing damage counters theme, not special conditions.
Card Execution and Balance: 8/20. 110 Hp is way too much for a Basic, and an SP... Plus it's attack is ridiculous. Intensive Care is too broken. You should be able to Bench your opponent with a basic pokemon that has 110 HP.. This plus Upper energy is broken...
Flavor and Picture: 0/20. None here.
Grammar and Spelling: 4/15. Special Condition should be capitalized. Chansey isn't Blissey.
Job Consistency: 9/15. It works, but could've been better.

Total: 45/100.

CharmanderRox:

Alakazam SN LV.43 90HP [P]
BASIC

[Alakazam is bent over a book, scrutinizing every word, holding up a lantern to read in the dark,]
Super Nerd Pokémon

[Poké-POWER] Concentration
Once during your turn (before you attack), when you play Alakazam SN from your hand to your Bench, you may use this power. Your opponent selects 1 Pokémon that he or she has in play, then chooses either the Basic Pokémon card or one of the Evolution cards. Look over the selected card. Then, your opponent hides the card from you and asks for you to either state its name, level, type, HP, Stage, number, Height, Weight, Poké-Power name, Poké-Body name, attack name, attack damage, attack cost, Weakness, Resistance, or Retreat Cost. Look at the card. If you got the answer right, draw 5 cards. If you got the answer wrong, your turn ends now. (You don't get to attack.) Either way, return that card to its earlier position.

[P][P] Insightful Advice 30
Look at your opponent's hand.

Through healthy mind games, Alakazam has become the master of reading and observation.

W - [P]+20
R -
RC - [C][C]

Card Mechanics and Concept. 30/30. Everything works here.
Card Execution and Balance. 20/20. all balanced and innnovative.
Flavor and Picture. 20/20. It's there, and descriptive.
Grammar and Spelling. 20/20. Nice Job!
Job Consistancy. 15/15. Studying is key!

Total: 100/100

Team PayDay Total 508

Team GLEC total 487

I was really disappointed in Team GLEC this round. Even with a missing member, PayDay really stole the show. Now, as leader, greenzangoose is immune to being fired.THIS ROUND. Soon, the leaders will change.

Lucario EX, ensignmerlin, and charmander rox--Meet me here in the 'boardroom', and explain:Why did the team fail this round? Who was doing their job right, and being productive, and who was not?

Ouch, that hurt... oh well, we'll be back next time. :thumb:

On the other hand, how is Arcanine considered that broken? I fail to see how 3 damage counters when it's put into active position, 70 HP basic, and a 40 damage switching attack for 3 energies is broken... can I have a full explanation other than just 'Broken, In a lot of senses.'?
