I'm actually a little confused by Play! points. Ive been out of the loops for a few months. To attend nationals do I need to have a certain amount of points? Also would I get able to attend grinders at worlds without the correct amount of points?

Play! Points are not the same as Championship Points. You accumulate Play! Points just by taking part and you get the same number of play points if you finish first or last.

This year UK Nationals requires 10 Play! Points from the Seniors and Masters, Juniors need an existing Player ID.

---

I would be surprised if the Grinder required Play! Points in the same way as Nationals but I don't know, I expect the Grinder will require an existing PlayerID which is tantamount to requiring at least one Play! Point.

I think you will NOT need any points to play a National Event in Europe. The Playerbase in the most countrys is just to small to do that. It woud destroy organized play over here.

In smaller countrys, like almost all in the EU, Nationals are not only important to the active players, its a big marketing event for the local Distributors.

Just think about this: If "only" 1100 Players attend US National insted of 1500, its not a big deal. But in the EU, most Nationals are about 100 people? Germany is the biggest with 200-300. in these "small" nationals every Player counts if the distributor whant to advertise in Magazins or Newspapers. And all players whant at least play 1 (ONE) big event in a season. Its not to much to ask for? or is it?

And for what i know, at least in germany, we have many new players every national so far, which has never before play in Oranized play.

Can't comment for Europe but I know for certain that the UK will require Play Points for Masters and Seniors.

The website has just updated and there is 1 Play! Point per league season.

This means that the majority of Judges out there should get enough points to play at Nationals, even if they're career Judges. I can't think of any LO that doesn't include themselves when reporting League seasons.

Ooohhh... Just noticed that I only got 1 P!P for each season, no matter how many Leagues I attended. That's... Disappointing... I'm hoping that changes.

I'd say it's about time we got some new info on how PP's will work or what rewards will be available don't you think?

I'm looking at my Play! Points history, what's the difference between "Points Earned" and "Points Awarded"?

For some event categories (League attended per season, non-Premier tournaments per month) there is a limit on the number of points that can be awarded. So, for example, if last month you attended League at 2 different locations, you would get "points earned" for both of them, but would only get "points awarded" for one of them.

Don't the European players have an overwhelming advantage in terms of Play! Points? For example, according to this post
http://pokegym.net/forums/showthread.php?t=161229
there are 5 UK regionals in March, all on different days. So a dedicated player could attend all of them (after attending the ECC regional last month) and get 30 Play! Points. Meanwhile a USA player who attends 3 state championships in March and a regional in April would get a total of 14 Play! Points.

For the Professor Cup, the August Prerelease has not been counted towards the qualification. Does the play! point for that prerelease count for the qualification for Nats?

Play Points qualify you for Nationals not worlds.

I'd hope Rewards/POTYA would be by Rating Zone.

Really curious how rewards will work though!

I am aware of that. I was referring to the designation of "Player of the Year" (which is seemingly determined solely by Play! Points) and possibly other "what you can earn" stuff, where having more Play! Points is better.

Fair enough. I've seen a lot of confusion locally over Play! points. I have no idea how the player of the year award will work.

Here's a contentious thought for the 'gym: would it be so bad if it did not go to a USA player?

^I wouldn't mind that, but Europe has so many more opportunities to get points, making it extremely unbalanced.

and USA has so many free tournaments....

[there is no such thing as a level playing field.]

The round trip for the five UK events is approx 1500 miles, assuming you have no work/school and can take the three weeks off. Much much more if either work or school have to be accommodated. Its actually cheaper to buy an airfare to Hawaii than attend all 5 UK regionals.

Although Pokemon said

Pokemon Organized Play will award the title of Player of the Year to the players from each age division with the most Play! Points....As we get closer to our official launch in early 2012, we’ll create a Play! Points FAQ that should answer all of your questions about Play! Points, and what you can earn.
the launch was over a month ago and the FAQ at
http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-news/op_playpoints_faq_2012-2012-02-10/
had some information, but left many questions unanswered regarding "what you can earn" and "Player of the Year." For example, regarding Player of the Year:

What are the further details on "Player of the Year"?

Will "Player of the Year" be awarded to the player with highest Play Point total prior to the World Championship, or after the World Championship?

Will there be a separate award for each "zone"?

It is stated that 20 Play Points will be awarded for playing in World Championships, but no mention is made of the Last Chance Qualifier in the Play Points award list. In terms of Play Points, is the LCQ just considered a non-premier tournament (1 PP)? If "Player of the Year" is awarded after the World Championship, then the huge 20 PP for playing in the World Championship would certainly mean that the "Player of the Year" must have obtained an invitation to that event, and attended it. There are opposing viewpoints we could have about this.

Some would say that it's only right and fair that "Player of the Year" be someone who attended the World Championship, for how could a "Player of the Year" have failed to attend the biggest and most important tournament of the year?

But others would say that since "Player of the Year" is based solely on Play Points, it should be something that ANY player could supposedly achieve, regardless of win/loss record, simply by participating in as many events as possible. ("Player of the Year" is really "Participator of the Year".) Since entry to Worlds is only for a small percentage of players, it eliminates all the other players from "Player of the Year" competition, which is contrary to the any-player-could-get-it concept. There are two possible detours around this: (a) If the 20 Play Points were awarded for EITHER the Last Chance Qualifier OR the World Championship, with a maximum of 20 if both events were attended, that would fix the problem. Or, (b) if the top 3 players in Play Point ranking prior to the World Championship were given invitations to the World Championship, that would also solve the problem, and would be a better solution, since that would indeed require attendance at the World Championship to win the award. (But this solution would undoubtedly cause resentment among the highly-competitive players who failed to qualify by other means, disliking the idea of some "no-talent" player getting in without winning.:nonono:)

But until the "further details" are forthcoming from Pokemon, we can only speculate and wish.
