Hey guys, I looked over some of the new support for Psychic types in the TCG, and I honestly think they will dominate next set. Mostly notably any ghostly Psychic types. Given that most of them are weak to Darkness, an archetype that slows way down with the imminent rotation of Dark Patch and their type advantage over some Fighting types who have recently taken the stage, mons like Trevenant, Dusknoir, as well as newly revealed Gengar-EX will have a strong presence in leagues and tournaments to come.

Gengar-EX - Psychic - HP170
Basic Pokemon

[C] Shadow Attack: Place 3 damage counters on 1 of your opponent's Pokemon.
[P][C][C] Dark Corridor: 60 damage. Your opponent's Active Pokemon is now Poisoned. Switch this Pokemon with 1 of your Benched Pokemon.

When a Pokemon-EX has been Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.

Weakness: Darkness (x2)
Resistance: Fighting (-20)
Retreat: 2

M Gengar-EX - Psychic - HP220
Mega Evolution - Evolves from Gengar-EX

When 1 of your Pokemon becomes a Mega Evolution, your turn ends.

[P][C][C] Phantom Gate: Choose 1 of your opponent's Pokemon's attacks and use it as this attack.

When a Pokemon-EX has been Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.

Weakness: Darkness (x2)
Resistance: Fighting (-20)
Retreat: 1

Dimensional Valley - Trainer
Stadium

Each player's Psychic Pokemon pays 1 [C] less to attack.

This card stays in play when you play it. Discard this card if another Stadium card comes into play. If another card with the same name is in play, you can’t play this card.

Mystery Energy - Special Energy

This card can only be attached to a [P] Pokemon. This card provides [P] Energy only while this card is attached to a [P] Pokemon.

The Retreat Cost of the [P] Pokemon this card is attached to is [C][C] less.

(If this card is attached to anything other than a [P] Pokemon, discard this card.)

Just these few cards strongly hints a clear, almost one sided advantage for Psychic types. What are your thoughts on this?

Excellent! Also, don't forget the most important ingredient to this:

Gengar Spirit Link - Trainer
Item

Pokemon Tool: Attach to 1 of your Pokemon that doesn’t already have a Pokemon Tool attached to it. If that Pokemon is Knocked Out, discard this card.

When the Pokemon this card is attached to evolves into M Gengar-EX, your turn doesn't end.

That'll be awesome once it comes out!

Gengar-EX seems like it can be good with Trevenant/Sigilyph and a Dragalge to form a retreat lock along with an attack/Item lock. Not exactly game-breaking though.

M Gengar-EX is cool, but nothing to build a deck around because it is so reliant on what your opponent has in play. Your opponent has to just not drop anything that has an attack like Charizard's Combustion Blast or Black Kyurem's Black Ballista and they should be fine. Like against a Fighting deck, you will only be able to copy their attacks for 100 damage at most, and that's not very good on a Mega Evolution (even if you use Spirit Link). If it sees play, I'm guessing it will be a 1-of in Gengar decks just for more options, along with Celebi-EX so you can still use Dark Corridor.

Not to mention that if it is really a top tier deck your opponent can just play a Yveltal deck, because it's still good even without Dark Patch.

I like Dimensional Valley. Using Dark Corridor for 2 is great. It also makes both Mewtwo-EX's and Chandelure-EX's second attack useable.

Mystery Energy will be quite useful.

So all these cards are decent-to-great, but nothing format breaking. Still, I think it's a relief to see that Gengar isn't broken (who wasn't expecting it to be?) and that it's support isn't ridiculous and overpowered like Strong Energy.

It does seem that P type Poké will definitely get a "boost" from the next set. In response though, would we not also see increased Yveltal EX, Absol, etc. play as counters?

I'm actually interested about where this will take us as well. An interesting prospect is the future usage of Mew-EX with the Dimensional Valley Stadium. Mew-EX, as we are all aware can copy any attack on either side of the field. It'd be interesting to see what better brains that mine can come up with for a Mew flavoured deck that can use any attack in play for a colourless less. It will require some construction for putting in things that are good value on free, one or two energy attacks as well as some luck to use what your opponent plays.

Also, IMO Toxicroak EX becomes slightly disgusting for being able to use Trioxic for only a single colourless.

Is there anything else that people can spot from older sets that just becomes that little bit better with a colourless energy less?

Cheers,
Mithos

OK in answer to my own question

Revenge Tokicroak Hits 90 for absolutely no energy cost.
Nidoqueen (PLF) hits 50 and poisons for one energy.
Weezing hits 20 to all oppononts pokemon for a single energy
Golurk (PLB) hits 60 for one energy
Safeguard Sigilyph can use Psychic for 50+ off of a psychic and a colourless.

Hmmm...the potential in this release is really exciting.

Gourgeist does the same thing as Weezing with ZERO...

Not quite, Dimensional Valley reduces cost of attacks for psychic Pokemon by one colourless. Gourgiest's first attack is a single Psychic. So it is the same as Weezing.

The difference is that Weezing has the aftermath ability (if you would prefer that) and deals damage. Gourgiest places damage counters, meaning that it can't hit weakness against the active, but also means that it can't be resisted nor will effects such as "'Bouffer' or 'Strikes Back' activate because it isn't dealing damage.

Cheers,
Mithos

Let's not forget Mew EX and it's access to any attacks on the board. Energy accel via Virizion for [G] seems pretty neat for instance. Seriously, we're in for a pretty interesting meta next format.

Well it looks like Eels is coming back... in the form of iron bells. Bronzong is now the Metal-type version of Dynamotor with it's Ability, Metal Chain.

I bet Malamar EX will be Dark. Past itterations have been Dark and there's already a Psychic EX in the form of Gengar. Most EXs of same typing tend to be Japanese promos, which Malamar is likely from the main set, for instance on of our Charizard EXs from FLF was from the Charizard side deck, and Hawlucha EX was a promo in Japan.

A lone Trubbish hits 160 with a muscle band and 6 flare tools for one energy.
Last resort can comeback against megaphone and tool retriever.

Weezing can hit 80-20-20-20-20-20-20 with a muscle band and 4 deoxys for one energy.

You probably know by now, but it's definitely dark.
