Rayquaza Gold Star

I'm trying to figure out why this card is so expensive.
I understand that it is an "epic" looking card but how is it more expensive than the Charizard gold star? Charizard always seems to be the most expensive card but not in this case. Was Rayquaza star short printed or something? Why aren't there more on the market right now?
Can anybody make sense of this?

I'd say one of the contributing factors was that ex deoxys wasn't a very popular set, meaning not many were originally opened. the ratio for star cards in those older ex sets were 1 out of 3 boxes also, meaning getting rayquaza out of a pack as opposed to latias/latios was very difficult. Combine that with the fact it's a lot of people's favourite star card and it drives up the value.

Dragon frontiers was introduced when pokemon started picking up popularity again, so a lot more of it was opened. I'm pretty sure the odds for a star card in that set were also better (one in two boxes I think? someone correct me if I'm wrong)

ex deoxys was pretty hard to get the gold stars.plus there werent alot of good cards during that time in the metagame that were from the set so it was pretty bland to get cards.when dragon frontiers came in there were only 2 gold stars in the box compared to 3 from deoxys.i do remember some people were also using rayquaza gold star in a deck while the only other gold star was latias.now as shinys became more popular people wanted more of the older ones so they also became more rarer.charizard is still one of the wanted ones but also latios latias and rayquaza are more sought after cause of how rare they have become

Inaccurate. There were MANY playable rares/commons/uncommons, and several great and interesting trainers. Plus, a third of the regular holos were good, nearly every Pokemon-ex was, and the stars were fantastically playable until DX finally rotated.

Deoxys was and still is a desirable set. However, since it was right after TRR (allegedly one of the worst-selling sets), there may be some proof for the theory that Deoxys didn't sell well.

the only playable cards i remember people wanted from dexoys was jirachi manetric ex rayquaza ex.nearly every ex was playable but most didnt see playing only certain ones.

i dont see how TRR was one of the worse selling sets when people made decks out of them and the trainers in that set were pretty good.plus the ex's in those sets people hounded them like crazy like mewtwo

I'd say mostly because of when it was released. When TRR, FRLG and deoxys were released, yu-gi-oh was still the biggest thing in town. Pokemon lost a lot of popularity during that time. Don't forget the majority of pokemon's sales comes from kids opening the packs; if the casual/child's market isn't interested, nowhere near as much product will be opened and thus less product will be bought by retailers.

I was one of those casual kids. If on;y I knew about booster boxes back then haha, I got a pack or two a week.

I do remember that cards from Deoxys had a horrible holo, they literally peeled away from pretty much any unprotected use. Did the stars have that issue as well? If so that makes them even rarer.

nearly all the rayquaza's I've seen that weren't owned by collectors have peeling damage; I'd say it's a common flaw for sure
