I suggest you spend your money on 1 starter deck and the rest on booster boxes of secret wonders/Mysterious Treasures the new set coming out and a newly released set. trade like a mad man to get all the trainers you need because they are the most important part of your deck without them you will get squashed. There are some good deals to be had from your fellow canucks.
Read the deck forums for some ideas on how to build a deck and go to a local league regularly to learn the ins and outs. Don't be afraid to ask any questions everybody will try to help you out.

Pokemon Card Game Diamond & Pearl III Secret Wonders Set of Both Theme Decks (Powerhouse & Lavaflow)

Pokemon Card Game Secret Wonders (Diamond & Pearl III) Lot of 10 Booster Packs

Is that a good start?

EDIT

My town only has a population of 30 000 and we don't have a league. I'd have to head out to Toronto for that which I rarely do.

EDIT #2

Are these two the same? Same name, but different appearance right?:

EDIT #3

Is buying 100 Boster packs a wast since there are only 130 different cards?

Is it still worth it to buy diamond and pearl?

EDIT #4

Do Starters contain LEVEL X cards?

You shouldn't buy the powerhouse and lavaflow decks unless you really like them. It is a better idea to just buy lots of packs because then you get trainers that you need, and lots of holos and you can trade holos that you don't need for other good cards. You can also only get level x cards in packs. I suggest you spend your money on mostly secret wonders and mysterious treasures packs because they have a lot of useful cards. You could also buy a torterra, infernape, or empoleon deck because those include some useful cards.

SW starters have lots of good trainers, I would buy them if I was new.

construction decks are good for getting energy and bad trainers, but you should just get either 4 empoleon or 4 infernape theme decks so you can have a viable deck.

Or 3 ape decks and a ape tin
.

Powehouse is a really really good starter deck. Bye 1-3 of those, get a Electivire Lv. X, 2-3 Rare Candies, a few more trainers (Celio's, Night Maintenance etc.) and you got a decent deck!

Well this is an overview of what I'll be buying. I'm not complete sure yet.

1 Pokemon Card Game Secret Wonders (Diamond & Pearl III) Lot of 20 Booster Packs

1 Pokemon Card Game Diamond & Pearl III Secret Wonders Theme Deck Powerhouse

2 Pokemon Card Supplies Ultra Pro Large 9 Pocket 10 Page Collectors Card Album

1 Pokemon Card Game Supplies Japanese Imported Official Card Sleeves (60 ct.)

10 Pokemon Mysterious Treasures (Diamond & Pearl II) Booster Pack

Total: $197.72

Should I buy any specific pokemon or should this be enough?

Yes I know I'm spending lots!

Buy 10 more SW boosters instead of 10 MT boosters.
You can easily trade your SW for MT cards.

And only buy 1 binder, the un/commons can you keep in a box of som sort.

And buy 65-70 Sleeves from someone like TheDarkTwins, pokemonmike or kirstin. I recommend black sleeves (assuming you're talking about pokeball sleeves), they are the best. (quality-wise)

Ok, thanks looks like I'm ready to check out.

Has anyone here ordered off toywiz and live in Ontario? Please tell me how long it took.

Shadow killer I live in Ontario and have several sets of sleeves I'll give you for next to nothing.

I use collectors cache, Pokemonmike, P_A, Kirstin when buying pokemon stuff. I find them guys extremely reliable and good to deal with.
Pokemonmike, P_A, Kirstin are traders in the trading forum and easily found.
www.collectorscache.com I think for the other one to buy from delivery is usually 2 to 3 days. Toywhiz I can't comment on because I have never used their services.

^ that sounds pretty good, but I don't recommend the Ultra Pro binders. I think you'd be better off just buying one mini binder (Ultra Pro) for your extra rare cards and just using standard 3-ring binders for the rest of your collection. Having removable pages makes for much easier organization. You might also want to buy some packaging tape too since binders rip and split very easily through regular use; I'm not even kidding! Good choice, I'd avoid Diamond & Pearl 1 since the cards in that set are easily accessible and not really in demand anymore. One more thing a new player like yourself needs is basic energy to make decks. They are very cheap, you should find a way to get some of those since they are essential to building decks.

Hey, it's almost trading time and I don't know what cards are that I can or cannot trade and what aren't.

What cards do I trade?

How many cards of 1 pokemon should I have?

Shadow I think their are plent of articles on how to build a deck on the gym. do some research on decks in the deck strategy forum and look at the cards most folks play. you will quickly see the trainers are usually between 19 to 28 cards per deck, energy is usually 15 to 20 and the balance is pokemon.
as for what should you trade firstly decide what is the biggest baddest pokemon you own, build around that.

go with Mysterious treasure packs. Try to get Blissey and run that. But first, get Castaways and Cessation Crystals. People will trade big for those cards.
