Reference vs. No Reference

I feel like I don't understand the conceptual difference:

I am not required to have a reference for PlusPower because an Errata was issued, but I'm under the impression I do need a reference for Special Energy that have been reprinted (Rainbow, Dark, Metal). In a format where all of them would be legal (Unlimited), all PlusPowers function as the Most Recent Printing, but isn't it the same for the energies? Why aren't they just considered to be Errata'd?

There is either an errata or not. If there is one, as Pop points out, it will be published in the Compendium under Errata. "Considered to be errata'd" is not a something that counts for anything; you would need, as you note, most recent printing.
