Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Rockville, MD Gym Challenge 05/28

It is called "Active" vs "Passive" judging. At Worlds we used "Active" judging which means correcting something if it is being done incorrectly. For an event like this you definitely want to use "Active" judging. :thumb:

By the way will deck checks be performed (i.e. which would have prevented the issue mentioned above and also due to the new deck sleeve policy) ?

Look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday.
Well..if you simplified it from "Active" or "Passive" judging, which I have read and understand, all MD events that I have been running will use Active judging. RainbowRichards used it when he was Head Judge, so I figure to use the same now that I am.

And I forgot to mention about deck checks. Forgive me, it was late at night and I just came back from a graduation party.. Expect deckchecks for everyone. Just a nice quick 60 count sifting for illegal cards with a check on sleeves for 11-15+. I believe this was the way Mid-Atlantic Regionals did as well..at least my age group. The "10 and under" group will need to do a card-for-card check. Sounds good? Storytime: During MD States, one young player managed to bypass deck checks and was playing with illegal cards. It was an eyesore when I was walking by and caught this while one of my judges, stading right next to me, didn't. You can pretty much bet that I was furious that something like this slipped by and a bit ticked by the judge not catching illegal cards being played right then and there.

*sigh* It looks like a big big turnout.. Well, hope to see everyone there!

Actually I would recommend a deck check for all players (matching deck with deck sheet) regardless of age group. Sure 15+ should be okay but you can always have a new player in the 15+ that has a card(s) that is not allowed in the current format. Doesn't take that long to do it and generally catches the issue before the tournament starts rather than during it. Just a suggestion...

Also wanted to clarify if single elimination rounds will be best 2 of 3, 1 hour matches ???

No, I don't think that'll ever happen. There was enough difficulty getting all decks even sifted at States. But we've all considered this before at one point in time. Unless you'd be willing to come by and staff, I'm not willing to put my judges doing individual card checks for over what..about 100 players?? Or, we can do that and have a starting time of noon.. It'll take long since not everyone has their cards in order, although it would be all judges' dreams..

Interesting...we have done this in NC with 3 judges and 90+ players and completed deck checks within 60 minutes.

Also what about best 2 of 3, 1 hour matches for single elimination ??? OR will this also be like MD States where it is only one game ???

Everyone SHOULD have their deck in order. Players have responsibilities at tournaments, too! I have no problem returning an out-of-order deck to the owner and asking them to reorganize the deck according to the deck list. This would cause grumbling/delays for a total of 1 tournament. Once players realize that the judge is holding them to this standard, the problem will go away.

Just my $0.02:smile:

Just a few things:

Griff, so you are going to this gym challenge? You said on sunday that you weren't:confused:

Laurel spelled "Aardvark" wrong.

I hope to see all of you on sunday for a great day of playing pokemon. Hopefully I will actually make the top cut this time. My best record at big tournaments like these is 4-2:frown:

I am currently estimating that about 15-20 people from Aardvark will be at the gym challenge from the head count I did last sunday. So instead of I, I'll say WE'LL see you on sunday.

Yes, please, concerned pokemon players want to know! We don't want a 2005 world champ or some other really good player to get eliminated due to bad luck (another thing that is said to have happened at MD states). I don't really see any reason not to have 2/3. If it's a matter of time, don't make the rounds longer, and tell the players to play at least two games. If they run out of time for game two, then the person who won the first game would be the winner

@pokemonforever: I'll post it on the Aardvark Gym forum that everyone should be ready for deck checks:thumb:
But since I made it my job to teach everyone there what "Modified" is and I helped many of them build decks, don't expect any problems from the people in the purple shirts.

Thats me:rolleyes:

YES YES... we would really like to know if we are going to have 2 out of 3 match play in the single elimination rounds. We found it very disappointing to NOT have it at the Maryland state championship. This is for much bigger stakes and find it much fairer to those competing.

I would also like to volunteer my son, Michael B (15+ MD state champion), to help judge on Sunday. He won a gym challenge last weekend and his trip to worlds and cannot participate at this gym. Hopefully you can use the help!

Feraligatr - 60 minutes.. Well, if you can keep a crowd from being angry arriving at 11am, starting at noon, assuming there's no computer errors. I'm not going to tempt fate since it seems every event I've even attended, something's gone wrong with the computer. As per the Best of Three (BO3), yes..that will be happening. I was going to mention it Saturday, but I guess you persistent people found out.

totoro - Everyone should, but not everyone has to or wants to.. But if such a miracle happens, it'll be a dream come true. We'll always have newcomers who don't have their decks in order. And from a personal experience, it's been a pain for me to shuffle after a card-for-card check with my deck in order. That's my two cents.

ixidor89 - Good luck!

ninetales1234 - Oh no!! More purple shirts!? You know, I have video of the many purple shirts that showed up at States. My goal is trying to count them all. Thanks for informing people. And I think you found out abou the BO3.

AquaChallengerB - Dark Dragonite? It'll be there. I don't even know if there's a clear metagame anymore..

headsrcool -

rody1202 - BO3 has been announced. As per your son being judge, I will talk about that on Saturday between me and Laurel. I'm thinking about using the extra help, but I'm quite tired at the moment to hold a conversation or typing an e-mail. Keep your hopes up though. Odds are that it will happen. :thumb: Thanks for volunteering!!

Looking forward to judging on Sunday & seeing you all there!

Hello everyone - glad to be a part of Pokegym now! I hope to see everyone in Rockville on Sunday so that we have a HUGE turnout for MD Gym Challenges. We've had it posted on our website too and we are doing the caravan thing again on Sunday to get as many people as possible to attend. I am looking forward to working with our head judge Kevin who I know will do a fantastic job. Keep your fingers crossed on the software - we deal with it crashing almost weekly in Lusby!

I will be wearing my microdrive (with a copy of TOM 1.07 on it) just in case!

Welcome Pokemon Players,

Sorry for the late night reply. I was hoping to get this information out sooner, but there were circumstances beyond my control. Anyways, here’s the lowdown on what’s going to happen for anyone viewing this post between now and then.

Tara Mattingly, who most of you know quite well, is going to be one of our judges. Jeff Reynolds, a great guy who was one of the judges involved since WoTC time, will also be judging. In addition, the rumors are true, Michael Barlock will also be one of our judges. Finally, me, Kevin Wong, will be the head judge.

Assuming there are no computer errors, this is what is going to happen. Registration begins at 11am. Please fill out the slip you get with your Name, POP ID, and Date of Birth. If you do not have a POP ID, ask and you shall receive one. Date of Birth is IMPORTANT!! As far as I know, you shall place this slip in a brown box on the opposite end of the registration line, near the computer.

After you turn in your slip, get out your decks and deck lists. Deck checks will be on the table next to the computer. Everyone needs to turn in a deck list and to get his or her deck checked by one of the judges. All ages will have their decks sifted for illegal cards and illegal sleeves. Anyone 10 and under will go through a card-for-card deck check.

Lunch, to my knowledge, will be either after the first or second round. The actual lunchtime will be determined and announced on site at the event. The number of rounds, which might be different for each age group, will also be announced on site at the event.

We will be using Result Slips. For those of you who don’t know how to use them, both players must initial their names on a slip of paper we hand you and circle who won and who lost. I might have players actually call judges over so that they can initial the slips as well; just an idea I picked up at Regionals.

To my knowledge, all participants will receive a Pokemon TCG Gym Challenge promo card, a commemorative Gym Challenge pin, and two POP Series 2-card promo packs. These will most likely be handed out during the final match of your age group.

Players will cut to the Top 8, unless there is a huge turnout for an age group. That will be determined on site at the event if there are any changes. From then, it is Best of 3 (BO3) with a 1 hour time limit. I think this covers everything. More will be announced at the event as things come up. Hopefully, not a computer error announcement!! Good luck to all!!

Oh, I might be taking pictures and video from time to time.
