Ross Alexander 5th Place UK Nats Report

Hi guys,

Well basically I had been prepping for this event for the good part of 3 months. The deck I decided upon regardless of how many times I attempted to shift my mind was Luxchomp. If the deck gets a semi good start it can cripple the best of decks and players however as I found out if it gets a bad start it's a dead deck. Basically my Luxchomp started as a DialgaChomp with Luxray tech and soon changed and changed until it was a build I was comfortable with I will post it at the end of this report. So I was also testing with half English half Scottish David and the McLewee brothers Nathan and Samuel. Basically I came down to the fact my worst matchup was Jumpluff especially if it had an AMU tech. So I tested and tested until the Friday that would start my journey to nats had arrived. I went up to Cumbernauld to Callum and Ian's house where we basically tested, eat dominos pizza and I helped modify their decks for the 5 hours until our Gym Leader and ride to nats Gordon arrived. The next few hours are very vague as I was KO'ed until we stopped at a rather dodgy out of the place McDonalds in this mystical place called....what was it again......o yeh England. Basically it was another 15 mins to the venue from there so I never attempted to get any more sleep and so we arrive to a terribly cold English theme park while i'm wearing shorts (can you say epic fail?). When we got their it was literally dead (we dodged paying the parking ^^) but about 15 mins later it filled up and the Fotheringhams arrived to open the venue. The next 2-3 hours were very uneventful and frustrating as there was a major delay waiting for the tournament to start. Well at least we got a T-Shirt was to big for me :(.

We also saw the Paisley crew who were friendly as always and David had arrived just in time for us both to approach Nathan and Samuel who were really nice friendly people. I also met my good friend Richard who I had met up for 2 years running hes a great guy as well as his cool friend whos name slips my mind. Basically I wandered around very tired and disoritentated until the first round was posted (o the tension).

Round 1 Ross Alexander vs Mamoswine Boy (sorry dunno your name hehe)This game was as close as I got to a donk all day but I must say even though his deck was probaly not going to be hard to beat in the long run the fact I had a god hand a lone Luxray and went first without call scared me when he flipped.....wait for it......SWINUB. Now why was I scared you ask? well if he had an energy and expert belt he also had game. Lets just say he used interviewers question for 4 energy and I t2 Luxray GL Lv.x'ed, Crobat drop for game.

David: 1-0
Richard: 1-0
Ross: 1-0
Nathan: 1-0
Samuel: 0-1

Round 2 Ross Alexander vs The Machampion (again your name slips my mind sorry)
I had a start which to the opponent would have been intimidating but my hand said otherwise it was something like 2 Luxray GL on field, 2 DCE in hand, a lightning energy, an energy gain and a poke turn. When he flipped over azelf I thought I could t2 him assuming he can't get another basic and I topdeck any Crobat finding card of which there are like 11 of in my deck. Though he Roseannes for Machop and my heart literally dies......luckily he BTS'ed for Machoke and attached but thats all he could do. I topped Collector took Garchomp C, Crobat G and Uxie. Garchomp C attached DCE and energy gain dropped bat for 10 to Azelf and dropped Uxie for a few cards of which were Cyrus's, poke turn and power spray. I knew that I had game my next turn assuming he couldn't get a Machamp out or another basic. he attaches expert belt and ko'es my Luxray. I then proceed to topdeck poke turn, cyrus for sp radar which fetched Garchomp C Lv.x and then poke turned Crobat G 2 times and Dragon Rushed for the win.

David: 2-0
Richard: 2-0
Ross: 2-0
Nathan: 2-0
Samuel: 1-1

Due to the large delay only 2 rounds means the lunch break had arrived so me and David looked for a fast food place where we could sit down and discuss shenanigans. We both got Chicken Burger meals which caused me to suffer heart pain (due to my diet I started 7 months before I never eat fast food) and David eat pathetically slowly :D. We basically go back now this is when I should tell you of this great English player I had heard about while in Scotland his name was Jak and apparently he was amazing so I knew I didn't want to play him. I joked with David how I would get Jak the next round and well......god just hates me....

Round 3 Ross Alexander vs Jak
The first thing I said to him was around the lines of "You were the one player I wanted to avoid playing" he laughed and said "Trust me i'm not that good anyone can beat anyone" he was really nice as players of his level are really full of themselves but he was really down to earth and is a good example of good sportsmanship.

So the game commences and he flips over Azelf due to events earlier in the day I assumed he was playing Gyarados but my opening hand was already telling me I had lost fortunately so was his. I had Ambipom G and Garchomp C on the field Jak went first. He passed. I topdeck Cyrus (thank you angels) this means those 2 power spray in my hand were about to take effect as I believe I sp radar'ed for a Garchomp C. I then attached an energy and energy gain to ambipom to swing at azelf for 60. The next few turns were pretty funny especially at a tournament of this level he kept attaching to his Azelf in order to lock up while also setting up a baltoy to get claydol and he also benched a Regice I assume he was either trying to fish the sprays out of my hand or force me to poke turn. Basically I came up with a theory. Jak isn't going to be running SSU in Jumpluff so I proceed to retreat Garchomp C and tail code energys to the Regice. Jak gets a Claydol out but power spray just cripples it. I believe I sniped it next turn leaving him drawless he attached again and attacked. I Cyrus number 3 for another power spray putting my count up to 2 and moved another energy to Regice. It went on and on like this until I was rotating Garchomps for easy ko'es while spraying some vital Uxie drops which he really needed. Eventually he did get Claydol and a Jumpluff out but I believe I was 4 or so prizes ahead and my last spray on the dol resulted in him having a benched Jumpluff with no energy so I Crobat drop Dragon Rushed it. I don't remember if he scooped or if I took the last prize but either way I ended up winning (I was that tired)

David: 2-1
Richard: 3-0
Ross: 3-0
Nathan: 3-0
Samuel: 2-1

Saying that the last round never extremely boosted my confidence would be a lie well it did until I seen my next opponent Fares Sekkoum great.....

Round 4 Ross Alexander vs Fares Sekkoum (sorry if this is wrong)
He flips over Baltoy and something else great even better another damn Jumpluff. Luckily I had a godstart. I collector'ed for 2 Chomp C and another pokemon and then attach a DCE for 30 damage. He then Roseanned for an energy and hoppip he then passed. I Cyrus for a power spray to make sure even if he gets a claydol it wont be too much of a threat. I then play Luxray GL Lv.x and bring up hoppip for the cheapest ko ever. Basically it went down like this until it was 6-1 on prizes by this time I had ran out of sprays and his claydol were free to get him a jumpluff with a belt and energy on it he then called over a judge now I don't know if this was because I was playing slow ( I didn't feel I was) or if he just wanted a judge to watch over to make sure he has time for a comeback which he damn right could have achieved as he Judge'ed (the card version this time) my 11 card hand in to my deck. Basically I had Chomp C Lv.x with energy gain and an energy on the bench and knew if I drew an energy in these four cards I had game. I got none but I did get Uxie. I topdecked Garchomp C Lv.x as he ko'ed my Luxray GL Lv.x. Lv.x the Garchomp C I promoted to feed to the pluffball. I then attached energy gain to be able to Uxie for 5 it went like this 1-whiff 2-whiff 3-more whiff o god.... 4-epic whiffage 5-CALL ENERGY. I swiftly attached retreated and ko'ed a benched basic for my last prize.

David: 3-1
Richard: 3-1
Ross: 4-0
Nathan: 3-1
Samuel: 2-2

So a Shuppet player from my leauge had also went 4-0 so it was very likely I was playing him he is very young and I didn't want to have to play him as I knew I had a good advantage vs shuppet. Being perfectly fair he did sort of lucksack the 4 wins considering 3 of those were single energy no expert belt or plus power donks.

Round 5 Ross Alexander vs IanThe start of this round was a joke they forced us to wait 5 minutes so we could roll for these stupid table prizes it annoyed me to be honest. I started with Azelf but luckily the rest of my hand was godly. This was shot up in flames as he announced the dreaded words "Iv'e got the win" but then quicly said "O wait no I don't" I dunno about you guys but when someone does this it really annoys me and is very rude. Basically this match in short was very easy he got a single ko on my Azelf which was replyed with me netting 4 ko'es in a row with Garchomp C rotation. What annoyed me is I was attempting to use my Banette tech to Temper Tantrum and Darkness Switch his non Unown G'ed Mr Mime which he proceeded to Unown G the next turn -.-. I drew my 5th prize and Lookers Investigation to shuffle his Shuppet 3 PP and expert belt in to his hand he draws dead and I take my 5th prize. I basically build up Luxray GL Lv.x for 3 turns being careful so that he draws no more prizes and trash bolt with 3 energys attached for the ko.

David: 4-1
Richard: 4-1
Ross: 5-0
Nathan: 3-2
Samuel: 3-2

I knew I had the t8 spot secured so I had little care for the result of my next match I gave my mum a call and then went to sit down for round 6.

Round 6 Ross Alexander vs Jonathan Cowley
This game was uneventful but in short could have changed so easily it was a Luxchomp mirror by the way. Had he flipped tails with his Toxicroak G's Leap Away I was able to Dragon Rush his benched Garchomp C with DCE and energy gain on it next turn. But of course he nails heads and ko'es my Garchomp long story short I try to come back but his sprays cripple me GG mate.

David : 4-2
Richard: 5-1
Ross: 5-1
Nathan: 4-2
Samuel: 4-2

David was crushed especially since Ian said at the start of the event we were 2 players short of a t16 cut and you would need 5-1 to top cut. However 1 4-2 would definitely top cut. He seemed to have already gave up hope and went on to play fun games. David of course got t8 and I swiftly found him and got him to hurry. Unfortunately David is up against Jonathan who is 1st seed and im 2nd seed playing Fares.

Top 8 Cut Ross Alexander vs Fares SekkoumGame 1: Youll see how bad he beat me from the fact the truth is he went second got Jumpluff, Claydol and proceeded to dominate me.
Game 2:This went alot like game 1 except I had a slightly better start but terrible prizes ( luxray GL, Garchomp C, 2 Cyrus and a DCE). He gets 3 Claydols up and Bright Looks my Garchomp's I intend to use to bring some prizes back to ko them he wins.

Very GG mate was an honour to be knocked out of nats by you XD.

Well David, Richard and me were all pwned out of t8 and recieved our packs. I pulled Alph Litograph so yeh it's ok. I however did feel absolutely terrible for Nathan and Samuel as they are two very good players and neither of them cutted. We then proceed to go with the scots to the very distant from the venue Indian Restraunt I had Chicken Madras me was burning I never expected it to be so hot.....

Without further adoo

Props:
Proving to myself I can compete with the best of them by getting 5th
Having an amazing time
David and Richard also topping
Meeting Jak, Nathan, Samuel and one of their friends (sorry im terrible with names)
Not having to sing "Scotland the Brave" as I never won (haha David!!!)
Richard, his friend, David, the paisley crew, Jak, the Scotland crew, Nathan and Samuel for all being good fun.

Slops:
It was a badly run event to be perfectly honest.
High level master players being very unkind as they were doing bad I won't name them.
Judges seem to have different rulings for the same card so it didn't really help.

Thanks everyone and good luck next year!

Hi Ross,

Well done on making top cut. The Scottish players did amazing,

Hope we can play again sometime. It was great meeting you.

Jak

Heh, Team Aldershot is not a real team, it's just a bit of a joke on the whole 'Team' thing.

If it WAS real, there would only be 3 members and only 1 of them top cut so your socks are safe!

Congrats Ross! Very well played, and it was great catching up with the Scots (well. . . Scots/Half Scot half English) *stares at David :p*

Are you going up next year out of interest?

It sounds a bit weird, but I was actually looking forward to attempting to eat a sock :p

Ah well, I suppose there's always next year...

Congrats Ross, it's good to see your testing paid off. You and David are 2 cool guys as well as great testing partners, so I'm glad you both Top Cut. With me and Samuel, thats just the way it goes I guess - have to try again next year! Is that your last tournament as a senior?

Great result. Congrats.

===FWIW yours is one of the many problem IDs that are holding up the upload of the event. The website has Ross Axxxxxx as a different popid email me your address so I can see if it matches.

Like many you don't appear to have a Trainer Club account on the pokemon website. if you do please let me know.

Congratulations - and to all those who did so well on the day. Just like to say that I thought organisation was good and the venue brilliant - so thanks to Ian and his helpers. I totally blew it when faced with playing Sami, but who cares - I had a whale of a time!
