Rotation Question

This might be posted in the wrong place...

When Dark Explorers comes out, what will the new rotation be? I have heard both CoL-on and B/W-on. What is the best way to judge which one it will be? I want to start planning a deck for the future and am finding it difficult to do so without knowing this information...any help would be swell! Thanks!

They will announce the rotation well ahead of time, likely around spring BRs, and we will NOT receive a rotation until after Worlds.

It isn't really a matter Of which but a matter of if but I beleive it will col on if they leave it bw on we will have less than 8 supporters (excuse my math)

COL-NXD would leave us with 11 supporters.

Problem is BW-Dragon Blade/Blast (Assuming they are the August set) leaves us these-
Bianca
Cheren
Cilan (...Useless in non Boar/Eel decks)
N (Not much of a late game hand refresh...)
Juniper
Bad Team's Jimu and Sabu (Disruption, not Hand Refresh...)

That's right folks, if we rotate BW-on we will have 1 Shuffle/Draw Supporter (Which isn't a card I'll want to be dropping late game), 2 Straight Draw Supporters (1 of which has nasty discard effects and the other is a better version of Bill), 1 that relies heavily on your hand being small (Sounds like wasting hand, then getting new hand will be heavy in this format, highlighted by Ultra Ball), and a disruption supporter...

Not sounding pretty to me.

Thinking Emolga/Minun/Plusle will be our search/draw...
Plusle – Lightning – HP60
Basic Pokemon
[C] Tag Draw: Return your entire hand to your deck, then shuffle your deck. Afterwards, draw 4 cards from your deck. If you have any Minun on your Bench, draw an additional 4 cards.
[L] Plus Ion: 20 damage. Flip a coin, if heads this attack does an additional 10 damage.
Weakness: Fighting (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1
26/69
Emolga – Lightning – HP70
Basic Pokemon[C] Call for Family: Search your deck for two Basic Pokemon and put them onto your Bench. Shuffle your deck afterward.
[L] Static Shock: 20 damage.
Weakness: Lightning (x2)
Resistance: Fighting (-20)
Retreat: 0

There will be no rotation when Dark Explorers comes out.

The rotation is at the end of the year (normally), not when a new set is released.

It doesn't matter how many Supporters we have, all that matters is that we have enough to make a consistent draw engine

Junps
Cheren
Bianca
N
Random Receiver

I don't see any problem with that.

The current dilemma that I forsee is...

What will the purpose of the Lost Zone be if CoL sticks around for a CoL-On format? No rotation would be a nice surprise but either way I could care less because I'm frankly annoyed with the broken cards such as Junk Arm/Lost Remover/Etc. but would enjoy others (Electrode/Donphan/Etc.) to stay.

In addition to that last comment, if CoL doesn't stick around... It kind of defeats the purpose of the reprints. So this is a real toss-up prediction the way I see it. I kind of am thinking no rotation but at the same time, we could definitely use one. Either way I'm fine with the decision and as unselfish as I'd like to sound, I have to add especially since I recently came back into the TCG.

The possibility of LW being useless won't even be a consideration.

I'm pretty sure they've done similar things before. Wasn't Rocket's Persian legal after Rocket's Meowth rotated?

I can't recall that personally. It's possible though, but it may be the logic behind it. There's so few things that would trigger or reference to the lost zone within a CoL format.

There would be a total of 8 cards, and 11 that have or reference pokepowers or bodies... meaning both of which seem like fairly useless and underused mechanics that would cause problems for newer players potentially, IF they keep them in (I'm not saying either way what they'll do because I can see a rotation either side of CoL)

They would also still have the confusion for new players with regards to trainer - supporters, trainer - stadiums, and trainer - items if they keep CoL in.

As has been stated, we will receive a warning before the rotation. When you test in anticipation of a rotation, you take your chances. Before WotC lost the license, we were testing for Legendary Collection-On. Yeah, that format never happened. XD

Testing does not mean you have to go out and purchase the full deck. If you have it handy, use it, but if not, proxy.

Things Not To Worry About Unlikely To Affect Rotation
  1. Having Less than X Supporters - This is Pokemon; we regularly enjoy having access to at least two options for large scale draw power and smaller draw power, as well as search cards, but this is by no means a requirement. Look at how homogenous many decks builds are anyway.
  2. Losing Access To Specific Kind of Supporter: Unless we have no draw Supporter what-so-ever, I can see us at least getting that format for a bit.
  3. Half-gone mechanic - Last time they tried not to break up a mechanic was the rotation prior... and didn't that cause huge problems when we suddenly had really old cards that were incompatible with BW-On rules?
  4. "Useless" reprints: most of the CoL reprints were likely done to fill out the set and make use of altnerat art lying around, or cover "Japanese" promo releases.
The main thing that will matter is balance, and since we can always get some odd promos here or there or added to a set, it is way to early to expect anything.

I remember seeing YouTube videos of people burning their Claydols.

Then TPCI announced that we would have a second year of DP-on

To be fair, that was just stupid. I mean, even if it isn't a regular occurrence, I am all for leagues preserving older formats, maybe with the occasional Old Modified Format tournament.

Even if not, s'called trading. :thumb:
