SC Salzburg&Dutch Nationals Report

Type O negative

Because I am already quite late with these, I'll hurry up and start right away!

Okay, so we went with our little team from the Netherlands to Austria, our team existing of Kevin (Kevin89), Anna (fireborn), Martin (Mvdv), Ernst and me. I first took the train to Groningen, there met Anna, went from Groningen to Utrecht with her and met the rest of the gang there. Because it was very hot that day, much trains had delays, and we were quite a bit worried about whether we would be able to catch the nighttrain in Duisburg.. Anyways, our train arrived in Utrecht with a 15 minute delay, so that was still acceptable (we had 40 minutes in Duisburg, so that would still leave 25 minutes). Okay, so the train moves on, we wrestle with other passengers to get to our seats (and I wish I were kidding at that :p) and woosh woosh we were in Germany...well suddenly, it didnt went as woosh woosh anymore, the train stopped, we were baking in there for about half an hour, we got messages from the crew that there were serious problems with the train.. Then, finally, the train started moving again, and we got an message that was quite literally like "Okay, we start to ride again with this train, we don't know how long it will last, we don't know how fast we can go, ummz just stay seated please". Okay, veeeeeeeeeeery comforting :p
When some crew passed, we asked them how we would now be able to catch our nighttrain to Salzburg, and they said to us that we just had to sit all the way to Frankfurt and then see if we could still catch it :p Anyways, we arrived at Frankfurt with a delay of an hour and a half  but...there was still half an hour to wait before the nighttrain would arrive there, so we still made it ^^

In the nighttrain, we playtested some, but I already had pretty much decided to go for my Dragtrode teched deck. We got a little bit of sleep, but I was more interested in watching thunders in the sky enlightening the beautiful landscape there than sleeping B)
Okay, then we arrived at Salzburg wothout too much of a hazzle, we walked to the tournament venue, which was still closed ofcourse (it was like 6 o'clock in the morning) but luckily, there was some sort of plateau which we could lay our stuff on and play a bit. After playing a bit around and writing our decklists, the venue had opened so we went inside. I met Lia there too, I was buying a few cards from her but it first looked like she wouldnt come at all, though she did after all which was really cool
I also went after the Regirock EX I was still missing from my deck, luckily, one of the German players had it and was willing to trade it for a R Mewtwo EX and a rev ATM: Rock.

SO I registered this deck:

3 Dratinin
3 Dark Dragonair
3 Dark Dragonite
3 Voltorb (1 Emerald (anti-Shedinja XD), 2 FRLG)
3 Dark Electrode
1 Horsea
1 Seadra
1 Kingdra
1 Feebas
1 Milotic EX
1 Regirock EX

1 Scott
2 Rocket's Hideout
1 Rocket's Tricky Gym
4 Great Ball
2 Rare Candy
2 Rocket's Pokeball
1 Pokémon Retriever

4 Darkness Energy
4 Dark Metal Energy
4 Rainbow Energy
2 Double Rainbow Energy

This deck sacrifices a bit of offensive power to cover its weaknesses with Kingdra; furthermore, because I was expecting Rocklock, I put in Milo EX to better the performance against it. Regirock is just a good thing to have in Dragtrode, IMO, cause with it you can even continue the beatdown while your darks are away already, it can get Rainbows attached for free and last but not least beats down on the not so few fighting weak pokémon (Lanturn, Slaking for example).

Round 1 vs Profdonphan (Slaking/Salamence/Pidgeot)
Ah, not something I wanted to see, and definitely not in first round, a Slaking deck o_O Even though, we both could set/up fairly well and poke each other´s pokés a bit. At one moment, he made the mistake to retreat his active Slaking, without having a Slaking on his bench, which allowed me to do a lot of things in my turn, a lot of Darkness Navigations, and laying down+building up my Regirock EX in hand, effectively giving me the match. It was a good game though, and he was really a very nice player ^^

1-0

Round 2 vs Cetin Y (Vileplume EX, Lanturn, Pidgeot)
Okay, what do you come across when you've just defeated a bad matchup, Slaking? Exactly, Vileplume EX -____-.. Anyways, it didn't matter that much, I didn't get much going and he could stomp on me twice with his Lanturn, after which I had no more pokés in play.
Afterwards it appeared he played Pidgeot too and most importantly, no Battle Frontier  so the matchup wasnt as bad as I initially thought but still..playing Dragtrode and coming across Slaking and VilEX in the first two rounds..

1-1

Round 3 vs Daniel C (Ludicargo/Lanturn)
We both have a decent setup even though I felt in control, after a while he was trying to kill my Nite with a sharded Lanturn, he was like, ummz, 160, I say, nope, 80, he looks confused, after which I point to the Kingdra on my bench  it would not be the only time Kingdra would save me that day..
Anyways, after that I fully grasped control of the match and won. GG though, even in spite of the mistake.

2-1

Round 4 vs Angelika? (Don't know exactly anymore) (Ludicargo/Lanturn)
I now felt confident about the matchup, which expressed itself during this match too, which I won wothout too much hazzle. She made a few little mistakes and seemed to be overall a little less experienced than Daniel last round. She was still a very nice opponent though, and we had quite some good laughs during and after the game =)

3-1

Round 5 vs Toni L (Gengar EX/Pidgeot)
Hmmz, I did not expect this deck, but didn't mind it either ;) Even though I had to mulligan like 5 times, which desperated me a bit, it still worked out in the end, and he had no real chance really.

4-1

I was almost certainly in top 8, but even better, my teammate Anna and me were both on top of the list! That was really cool, and meant we had to play each other in the last round. We decided to let her give me the win, so that we could rest a bit, buy some food and drinks and mentally prepare for top 8.

Round 6 vs Anna S (Rock-lock)
5-1

Top 8: ProfDonphan (Slaking/Sally/Pidgeot)
Okay, this must have been destined :p Me again meeting this matchup.. Even though, I had muchoz luck in this match, both games he couldn't really get anything going, while for example my start in the second game was like: Dratini active, great ball for orb, rare candy tini into Dark Air, search for dark Trode, second turn, Trode, DN, then EL for Dragonite and then 80 damage. It was almost like playing Zap EX :p And so I won, but not without luck.

7-1

Top 4: Daniel C (Ludicargo/Lanturn)
Where I had muchoz luck last round, it totally abandoned me these two games. Even though the beginning was quite humorous, I wanted to pileshuffle his deck, so he wanted to do that with my deck to, so it was said so it was done, we draw, and both mulligan. We pileshuffle again, draw our hands, and...mulligan  this went on for about two or three times after which we were finally able to get ourselves some basic pokés in hand :p (all the opther players seemed to have ended their first game already or so it seemed  ). First game I could not get much going, even though he forget about my Kingdra once more, he still took the game. Second game I could net get up anything else but a Dark Trode and milo EX, i Had to Energy bomb the 3 dark attached to trode to Milo EX, because he had a Lanturn on the bench, but it didnt matter after all, since he warp points my milo EX and then kills it woth Lanturn. Even though I still put up a bit of a fight afterwards, it was quite a downhill battle from there.

Sadly, Anna lost too in top 4, so that would make us both 3rd, still not a bad record ^^

So I got my prizes, which turned out not to be that much (9 boosters, a pencilthingy, a coolerbag and two pair of sleeves), sadly, but on the other hand, the attendance wasn't that high even so.. (38 players total)

The trip back went really smooth, though we were rained to death (well, almost) in Salzburg while we were trying to get ourselves some decent food :p Darn, that was some thunderstorm there! Even though the loud bangs didnt prevent me from falling asleep for like 15 minutes on the steps of a building, barely protected from the rain..

Props
- Organisation for a well held tournament, everything went really smooth and such, and the fact that they made it a Stadium insteda of just a Nationals, which was really cool :D
- Anna for ending up high like me, Team LG Ownage!
- Martin, Kevin and Ernst for being cool teammembers (though not LG members mind you :p ) and all the hours of playtesting and such. Martin in special for doing all the work in getting our traintickets and such, thx!
- Jeroen L for the muchoz playtesting before the tourney :D
- Me for playing faultless as far as I could see.. ^o^ (Im a bit of a tight player so I hate making mistakes)
- The ticketman who wanted to get photographed with Poké cards in hand ^o^ that was cool! (for pictures, see spaces.msn.com/members/typeonegative (or something like that))

Slops
- Thee, train!
- The a bit low prize payout
- The low attendancy
- Ernst for dropping after 3 rounds :p
- The guy in the nighttrain who made Anna lose on of her deckboxes...including deck..

I will soon add the report for Dutch Nationals too, but at this moment the computer is being a little ***** to me so I gotta fix it a bit  Till then!

PS, Anna, you may correct all the little 'Dutch' mistakes in here, I'm wondering how many there will be :p

I must admit that it's not as fluid as Anna's report, but still, interesting ;-) Too bad for the attendance... And for being both 3rd! Sadly that Stadium was held when our Nationals were held, otherwise I should have been there too. Now in France we don't often have tournaments, so I try to move a little, as I did for your Nationals. Next year I'll be in Scotland, I hope there'll be more events :]

I'm waiting for your other report ^^"

PS : What does "muchoz" mean? Is it typically Dutch, or have I to review my English slang? :p

*thinks 'muchoz' = Spanish 'mucho' = English 'much', 'many', 'lots' lol!!!*

Nice report! I think I have met Angelika via email recently!

Anyways, a week later were the Dutch Nationals, and this time around I prepared a little more unorthodox deck, a Spinning Tail deck that almost fully counted on losing some prizes in the beginning and then Tail all the way. I teched in Kingdra again since I had fallen in love with it the week before :p and used Jirachi as the main set-up poke, with 3 Swoops to be sure on starting with it. The deck looked like this:

4 Larvitar (Dig Drain)
3 Dark Pupitar (Explolution)
3 Dark Tyrannitar (Spinning Tail)
1 Dark Tyrannitar (Sand Damage)
1 Horsea
1 Seadra
1 Kingdra
4 Jirachi DX

3 POW! Hand Extension
3 ATM Rock
3 Swoop! Teleporter
2 Rocket's Poké ball
2 Pokemon Retriever
2 Rare Candy
1 Switch

4 Darkness Energy
3 Dark Metal Energy
3 Scramble Energy
3 R Energy
1 Rainbow Energy

Anyways, though it's a risky strategy, I believe the deck is really versatile and surprising too. It doesn't really have any bad matchups other than quick fighting decks, or for example Magma decks. T2 might be a little problem because of its speed and Jirachilocking power, but even then only one scramble and one R is all you need. Against Magma and such, I just hope to get my Kingdra out, which almost dramatically changes the odds.

Well here's how it went:

Round 1vs Peter (EX Dragons)
He started out with a Latios EX in front, and Rayquaza benched. Later on there only came more and more of those EX Dragons, and I knew only thing I had to do is wait till he knocks out my Jirachi, then POW his quaza (which had gotten lots of energy) and Bite Off, and then let him knock out my first (scrambled) Tar then coming up with the second, Darkness energy fed Tar which would bite off two other EXes. So thought, and so it went.

1-0

Round 2 vs Wesley (Togetic/Kingdra/Furret)
This is quite funny, as he is a friend of my ex-girlfriend (who was there too, though not playing o_O) and as he knew about me, he already told my ex-girly about how he was gonna beat me and such :p (not that my ex and I live in dispute or something, it was more for the fun of it :p)
Anyways, the match wasn't really that much of a match, he couldn't get out Togetic, and went right into the Spinning Rock trap, which killed four of his pokés and effectively him.

2-0

Round 3 vs Manuel (Blastoise EX/Articuno EX/Jirachi)
I do not start that bad, but he starts a bit better by turn 1 Blastoise EX. From there I can't seem to be able to draw anything that I need, and lose therefor.

2-1

Since there were about 50 contestants and only top 8, I now had to win every match to still be able to top 8..

Round 4 vs Jamal (Dark Drago/Hypno/Raticate/Togetic)
Pfew, this was a really close one! Because I again did not get what I wanted with Jirachi, he was able to build up quite a bit, including Togetic. We got some kills here and there, I had to kill instead of Tail because he would otherwise be doing too much damage too quick, untill it was 1-1 each. Hes got a togetic, I Jirachi up front. I then Briney my benched Tar so he acnt do 70 anymore and then finish Togetic off with my Jirachi. Or something like that, anyways it was really close!

3-1

Round 5 vs Lidy (Glalie/Kingdra/Quagsire)
As close as the last game was, as quick this one was over. I was a bit afraid because she started with a Snorunt, but she couldnt get the Glalie so I did my best to kill the Snorunt as quickly as possible, and from there it was a piece of cake.

4-1

Round 6 vs Jeroen (I think his name was) (mix of pokes including Togetic, sorry I do not remeber anymore..)
He gets Togetic out, but I am able to tail since his Tic isnt build up yet, I kill about 3 of his pokés and then finish Tic of with Jirachi. Don't remember too much of it anymore actually..:$

So I made top 8 eventually! And what do I have to face?

Top 8: Jeroen R (Magma)

And what is in my prizes round 1?

Kingdra

So what do I do game 1?

Lose.

What happens game 2?

I get Kingdra out, albeit a bit late, and at one point Im able to finish him off by continuing to Rock him.

How much time is there still left?

5 minutes.

What was my deck again supposed to do?

Come behind in prizes first.

So what do I do in Sudden Death?

Lose.

That about sums up that match  Even though ofcourse he was quite a good player, no doubt bout that. I just feel a bit sad that I got to face him of all the decks I could've faced in top 8, most which I would've had a good matchup against. That my Kingdra was prized game 1 was like a bit the reversed icing on the cake.

But in the end, it didn't matter, since Anna eventually won the whole thing, and as she is a teammember, its almost like we all won it ^o^ so that made me 'forget' the unfortunate top 8 pairing easily

One good point about my top 8 match was though that I was able to Admin continually just in time, the third being in sudden death, and Jeroen slamming his hand on the table showing me how he wouldve killed me next turn, which led me to comment, "I know"...to which one of the judges commented, "wha...are you psychic or something? " XD That was cool :p

Oh well, props and slops again:

Props:
- Anna! You know why
- PS-Games for having a real good prizesupport and organizing a good tournament even though it started somewhat late :)
- Jeroen L (teammate) for still ending up in the prizes :)
- All other LG teammates for ending up high
- Eppe for just being Eppe (I forgot Eppe in my last props list o_O so..)
- Eppe for just being Eppe
- Martin for judging in top 8, thanks for watching at my table, cause there was a bit of confusion about whether energies had been played and such.. :thumb:
- All my friends who supported me before and after the tourney :p
- Ernst and Martin for again a round 1 match (they met each other round 1 in Salzburg the week before too! Talking bout coincidence..)

Slops
- Kevin for not making top 8 :p (but dont you dare quitting for good! youre still every bit a good player and you know that :) )
- Kingdra for being prized when I finally needed it
- PS-Games for not allowing Lia and the rest in the tourneyscene while they did nothing wrong there...oh well, at least it wasnt that strictly enforced :)

Ummz, I guess that was it really..

Anna good luck on Worlds!

PS @ Lev, heh, here the report is ;) yeah, sadly those tourneys coincided.. And my english, well Miss Fluid English studies that darned language so she'd better write a more fluid report than me  lol

@RR, yep, you're pretty muchoz right ;)

Nice reports :D Next year I'm gonna win my trip in the UK nationals, so you can actually win the Dutch Nationals, deal? :p Then we can go together, hehehehe.

Hmmz, nah, me thinks me rather judges next year, so extreme delays like this year's won't be that bad next year :) But oh well, that's something to decide on next year ^^

I'll win the trip in UK too, 2nd place I mean. That would make a Dutch girl and a French guy winning UK Nationals. It sounds nice, thanks Erasmus! :p

Good reports. Thanks. SC in Salzburg? Cool. Europe is picking up; go Europe!

I like the 1-1-1 Kingdra line, it's risky with only one of each, but that comes with the strategy.
What suprised me, you didn't play any Stadium cards, why?

You mean in my Spinning tail deck? Well mostly because they took up space, and I found that the 20 hp plus didn't make that much of a difference. Furthermore, the Sand damage Tar is nothing more but a tech to have a Tar without Fighting weakness, and you need techs to support your deck, and not your deck to support your techs, so that's why I did not include stadiums with the idea of countering Battle Frontier which stops sand damage.
But then again, if I wanted to include Stadiums, I'm not really sure what to take out either. The POWs fully strengthen the deck's philosophy, and were dead handy in many matchups. Swoops are out of the question too, I just need a Jirachi start, cause larvitar or Horsea arent going to do much of their own. Retrievers are to get those swooped pokeys back, and furthermore, you can always count on having something of your Tar line in your prizes, so you need replacements if you do not draw them from your prizes when already a Tar has bitten the dust. The ATMs are the win conditions, the pokeballs and Celio add consistancy, rare candy allows for quick recovery and speed if needed, and the switch and Brineys are just necessary when you have pokés with such high retreat costs. I also feel the draw supporter line is a bit low for my liking, even though Jirachi more than makes up for that.

So how do you think about it now? :) I'm always interested in the opinions of others so =)

I understand the mechanics, I was wondering why you left out Great Balls? It's a kind of extra Basic.
You explained me that 8-9 basics is enough and I tried a deck that way, and it worked well.
But it still scares me, remembering my bad start hands last year Worlds.

I was suprised not finding an ancient tomb or desert ruins, but I do understand they take space which you need for other cards. Also I don't see a problem when there is a BF in play, with 3 spinning Tail TTar you use those, so no real need for a Stadium.

The only space I could create for a draw supporter is leaving 1 Pow, Swoop or ATMRock out and adding 1 VS seeker or Celio.

Though a counter to mt. moon is necessary I think, but it was pretty predictable no one was going to play mt.moon since everyone thinks battle front is better anyway =p

Nice reports, Nice results, Austria was way much fun, and thanx for being in your slops : D
lol, nah, you will see me on 13th of August again =0 (looking forward to it)

@ RG, the choice was between playing Ancient Tomb or Kingdra. But I think Tomb is way too easily discarded since the stadium wars were raging again, and without playing stadiums, everyone who was playing stadiums (like 3 or 4) now had 2 to 3 dead cards in their deck (the excess stadiums). I believe Tomb is way too easily dealt with, while Kingdra is a tad slower but steadier in the end.

@ Kev, hmmz yeah, I expected no-one would be playing Mt. Moon indeed and it turned out I gambled right since I never encountered one. Btw, me thinks youre finally gonna be the lucky dude there, 13d of august ;)
