Scramble energy confusion.

How does this card work?

I've read the card and believe that it only ever provides ONE unit of energy.

Howeveer I'm sure I've read suggestions that it provides either one or three units of energy.

So which is it?

Losing (have more prizes then opponent): Provides 3 Rainbow Energy
Winning/Tie (have equal or less prizes then opponent): Provides 1 Colourless Energy

thanks for the reply.

but where does it say that on the card?

....Scramble Energy provides every type of energy but....

so if you meet the criteria you get rainbow with a qualification but

scramble energy said:
.... but provides only 3 in any combination

Isn't the 3 refering to three types of energy rather than three units of energy? The object of the sentance being the compound type of energy

After all rainbow never provides more than a single unit of energy.

the word "combination" suggests that it is plural. the "3" assumes that you know it is referring to "energies of that nature (or, energies that provide any type of energy)" rather than explicitly saying so.

So Scramble energy would greatly help an opponent playing, say Gardevoir ex (or Jumpluff or one of the Deoxys). Cos he can be in the lead on prizes, and then HE gets to use the added effect that it counts as 3 energies not one... If you see what I mean?

Hmm I dislike making the assumption that the 3 refers to units of energy rather than types of energy, after all the sentance is about types of energy and not quantity. The usage of combination too suggests that something unusual may be going on. A sentance 'Provides three rainbow energy in any combination.' immediately begs the question as to why the 'in any combination' was added.

If the card JUST said ...Scramble energy provides every type of energy. without the qualifying statement then it would be obvious that it is either 1 colourless or 1 rainbow. Nothing in the shortened sentance would allow the quantity of energy to be increased.

The dificultly I'm having is understanding what is meant by the qualifier but provides only 3 in any combination. Only 3 what? If three rainbow was intended then I wish that that had been stated explicitly using three small rainbow energy symbols in the card text. It is more natural from the English text to conclude that the qualifier is not modifying the (unmentioned) quantity of energy provided but rather the type of energy provided. Still relying heavily on the English isn't guaranteed to give the right answer, hence my original question.

If the card does provide a triple rainbow while you are behind then I can concieve of several ways of using this card to quickly recover should you ever be so unfortunate to get behind in a game. The implications for tournament play is an increase in the number of games that are drawn when time is called. Still the impact that a triple rainbow will have on the game isn't my concern here.

[Daddiursa: If it is a triple rainbow when you are behind then an oposing Gardevoir player will benefit greatly from your playing Scramble.]

well, look at the picture. There is one colorless in the front (winning/tie) and three rainbows behind (lossing).
I am 100 per cent sure it provides 3 UNITS of energy. Its just missing the word Energy in the text

but provides only 3 ENERGY in any combination
if you look at DRE, there is the exact same phrase but the word Eneergy is not missing.

Metagross: I quite agree. If the card had the missing word energy that is present on DRE then the meaning would be clear. Unfortunately that word is not present and assuming that it should be could be a mistake. Assumptions can get you into trouble.

well, but if you were right and it would provoide 3 types of energy, you would have to choose which ones will it provide when you have more prizes. I highly doubt that there will be any card like that.

Let's look at this another way, shall we?

If the phrase meant what you are saying it seems like it means, why would it say "...provides all types of energy..." and "...provides only 3 in any combination." at the same time?

Actually the card doesn't say 'and', the card has 'but' as the conjunction. 'but' is often used to limit what has gone before: in typical usage you would have a sentance built as follows ' ....the good news...BUT. ..... the bad news...'

The card text reads that you have a choice as to which 3 types of energy the card provides. A limited rainbow if you like. But it doesn't state in the text that if provides more than a single unit of energy, picture not withstanding.

So you could choose it to be LRP and not provide the other types. This has an impact on those cards that discard particular types of energy. It opens up a variety of strategic possibilities.

BTW I'm not saying I'm right, rather that I've read the card several times and I am unable to justify its current use as a triple rainbow when you are behind based solely upon the card text. I wish I could read Japanese ! In all probability it is a triple rainbow when you are behind, I wish it was more obvious if that is the intention.

When I look at the card I see 4 nrg in the picture.
1 colorless and 3 rainbow, meaby that only 3 is because of that (still I think only is a bad phrase to use, 3 is a lot)

It means 3 rainbow of any combination meaning that if you attach it to a Pokemon with multiple energy type requirements, it will be met by the rainbow effect. You only get the rainbow effect of 3 energy when you are behind. It can be a blessing and a curse, depending on what deck your opponent is using (ie gardy, jumpluff). When u equalize or go ahead on prizes, it becomes 1 colorless unit of energy.

Lia you could well be correct and that the only 3 is aimed at those who might interpret the card picture as providing four units of energy!

The wording may be slightly off course, however from the artwork the intentions of this card are pretty clear.

I think they worded it like that to make it clear that, while it provides every type of energy, it doesn't provide every type of energy "card," only 3. If it meant you could only choose 3 different types of energy for ONE "card" value, as you said, it would say "provides any type of energy" instead of "every type of energy." When I first read it, I was impressed by the wording, actually, but that's just me. I thought it was very clear. :p

One colorless Energy when tied or ahead on Prizes.
Three Rainbow Energy when you are behind.
While the word "energy" is missing from the text, the format of the wording matches that of DRE.
In any event, that is how the card works. Consider it official.

Official it is then.

My eyesight is slowly deteriorating so in a couple of years time I wont be able to read the fine print anyway!

I thought that ProfessorAspen's wording was nice and clear. It had the benefit of not requiring a really small font too.
