Season 2013-2014 in Europe

Hello,

I don't know if it has been officially revealed to the mass of players in Europe, but there will be few changes in the way the tournaments will be held in Europe.

Here are the few changes revealed after the meeting between the European entities :
Battle Roads : The Battle Roads will now be held anytime between October and April/May. There will be no anymore boosters as prizes, only the promo cards (maybe).

Tournament format : There are the big changes for the next year. Now games will be played in Best of 3 of 50 minutes + 3 turns. At the end of the game there will not be Sudden Deaths anymore, so Draws will be possible. There will be Tops limitation for each category of tournament. Maximum top4 for Battle Roads and top8 for the rest of all the tournaments... Means that at Euro Cup you will have hundreds of masters fighting for a top8... It seems that this concerns also Nationals (!).

Professor Program : There will be 3 different classes for professors. The best professors will be eligible for big events.

League : Seems that now league will allow to win both promo codes and promo cards.

Player Rewards : Will disappear in 2014.

Let's discuss !

they improve League and Swiss rounds but everything else become worse? I dont see a reason to play BRs. Also T8 at big tournaments is a joke. Whoever made the decisions needs to be replaced

The decision to limit tops is probably to most stupid ever made by Pokemon,,, I think it only affects Europe.

If it is so for nationals what will look like the German national ^^'''''' ?

Very little of what you're "speculating" makes any sense. I would warn anyone who reads it to take it with a grain of salt until an official announcement.

Ok assuming this is real, some thought:

b03 50 minutes, well i dont like it. 50 minutes is not enough for a legit b03, there will be so much stalling for timeouts / draws.. I dont see slower decks working under these conditions.

I guess the idea is to have b03 in swiss so that swiss becomes more legitimite. By removing the luck factor you can cut to t8 assuming that thanks to the b03 the players who make it into t8 are all "deserving" to be there. Just trying to figure out the thought process behind this, still dont like it though :/

Removing prices from BR, why?! Unless we get a usable promo but even then..

Player rewards: WHY?!

Still I doubt this will happen, if only because there is no way they'll have a tournament software that supports draws before 2015 :p

no idea on the truth or otherwise (I was only present for a little of the meeting) but the tournament software already supports draws for VGC so I can't see that being a big problem.

Even we are happy or not, it seems that this is real thing. Only for nationals they might make an exception to the top8 thing...

Now, I personally think this is a decent 1st step in a format where donks are not that big of a deal, but 50 minutes for a 2/3 is a little too slow unless they play with 40 card decks with 4 prizes and a 20 card sideboard. However, I don't think Europeans would play like that, so in other words, there's really no explanation for the 50 minute best 2/3.

The bof3 50 mins is not shocking imo. French ised to play bof3 40mins in the past. But the top8 thing is so idiotic.

I see very often in tournament the 6-0 losing in top8 and a 4-2 making top2 or winning...

Ehh, the part about the different levels of Professors being eligible for higher/lower level events sounds odd. Stateside judges don't even have to be professors, and while that may not be true over in Europe, it seems odd.

A few things that falcom has omitted :

- The decision to play Swiss rounds in bo3 was apparently made so that Juniors and Seniors can play more (often, at least in France, they only have 3 or 4 rounds even in Cities or Regionals).

- The limitation in tops doesn't change a lot, except for the ECC and Nationals. However, for Nationals at least, if there are enough players for a top 32, the tournament will be played in a particular fashion. Apparently, the top 32 will begin a new tournament with 4 Swiss rounds and a top 8.
It's not clear yet what will happen if there are only enough players for a top 16 (which is the case in France, the UK, Italy...). Apparently it's not yet decided.

Why am I thinking MTG here?

Time limit Best of 3 50 minutes? This is exactly what MTG has.
Judge / Professor system with levels? This is exactly what MTG has.
Top 8 maximum for all big tournaments? This is exactly what MTG has.
Top 32 play the next day on before cutting to Top 8? This is quite similar to what MTG is doing on Grand Prixs and Pro Tours (although in MTG they would roll over the standings from the first day)
Battle Roads the whole year long and only been supported by Promo Cards? Sounds a lot like Friday Night Magic...

Hmmmm....
Let´s wait for the official statements.

What im wondering is why they can even do this,, messing with tournament structure isnt something that p!p seemed to like in the past. I also wonder if this is a binding decision or every local distributor can decide to apply this or stick with the old system.

Maybe the whole b03/t8 thing really isnt isnt that bad but bo3 50 minutes is too short :/
We'll see Im not convinced but its probably not as horrible as it sounded at first.

I don't understand 50 mins for Bo3. I would have thought they would extend it more than anything else. It will only favour donk style decks, and people who know how to stall.

It seems that this is for european countries, North Americans might not even be affected...

So then what would be the sense of all this? As long as the tournament rules do not state this as a necessity, in the end, distributors will - as usual - be allowed to do what they deem to be appropriate. As we have seen above, playing best-of-three 40 minutes is okay, although it is clearly a violation to current tournament rules.

I doubt that force to top8 in the us would be possible, and for now it has only be revealed to european op managers/distrubutor.

Anyway god knows what foolish things we will face next season.
