Seeking the bane of Vileplume-Gengar

So a buddy of mine has a typical trainer lock deck (as I've seen described in other forums) where he pairs the Vileplume trainer lock pokebody with Gengar prime's Poltergeist attack to do massive amounts of damage.

I've thought of running Cessation Crystals, but was wondering if anyone knew other insightful ways of fighting this style of play.

Not really because they can still shadow room around you if you use umbreon.

Try Dialga G level X.

It will shut off vileplume's trainer locking ability entirely. You can also try using ampahros PL (will shut off fainting spell) and uxie LA (you go back into the deck so if you KO gengar, fainting spell has no target to flip for)

What kind of format are you playing? If you're saying Cessation Crystal is legal, then I'm assuming either like Unlimited or RS-on or something.

In the format that was played in, Dialga G Lv. X was the best counter but you may still have problems with Gengar Lv. X's Level Down which would get rid of Dialga. A deck based around Dialga G works best because then you can play Power Sprays to stop Gengar Lv. X. It's also resistant to Psychic and does not have a Poke-Power so Gengar may have a difficult time damaging it. Knocking out Gengar with poison from Skuntank G is useful for avoiding Fainting Spell, and Unown G can protect you from Shadow Room damage.

If older cards are allowed, Cessation Crystal could work but you would need to get it down before Vileplume came out (since you can't play it under trainer lock.) There is also this Latios and this Latias which would shut down Vileplume.

Steelix Prime + Skuntank G.
He can't do anything against that, and Vilegar gives you enough time to power up Steelix. Sure he can try to snipe Skuntank but if you put it down right before you finish off his first Gengar he loses at least two Gengars while you lose a basic Pokémon. Usually this deck also runs Blissey so you can get rid of trainer cards if you happen to have so many (4+) that Gengar can actually hurt Steelix. I won semifinals of my Nationals in 2011 with this strategy.

btw, if pre-MD cards are allowed you can simply attach an Unown G to your Skuntank.
