Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Share some insight, please.

So…I have this 10 (ten) page paper to write for my English class. My teacher said that I just have to argue a point of some sort and support it with evidence. Now, most people in my class are writing about controversial issues such as abortion, gun rights, or death sentences. My professor said to write about something that I care about. So, I’m thinking about writing about the pokemon community, or else I’ll have to use some boring topic and fry my brain with strenuous research.

Some things that I could “argue” about are:
1. How pokemon is not for little kids, lots of teens and adults play it too.
2. How pokemon is not like the other card games; it’s more friendly and entire families play together—I could even say that it brings families together.
3. It’s cheaper than (some) other hobbies.
4. The cards can help kids to learn how to read and to do math, to an extent.
5. Many friendships and even a few relationships have started with pokemon and the TCG
6. Playing pokemon cards keeps us teenagers out of trouble and out of our parents’ hair for awhile.
7. Placing in tournaments wins kids some scholarships, thus easing their first year of college and encouraging them to go to college.
8. If you guys can think of any more topics to “argue” about, feel free to let me know!

I would like some insightful stories that I could use for evidence or quotes, such as a story about how you met your best friend through pokemon, or how you won a scholarship…etc.

If you can think of anything not said above that would go good in an essay like this feel free to post your idea.

Please be serious about this and be courteous in your post. Try to use good grammar as well, I can’t quote something that is horribly distorted. Also, if I am able to use your quote or writings, I will have to ask you for your name so I can cite you. Although, you could just give me a made up name--just make sure it sounds believable.

If I can’t get enough ideas and quotes, then I’ll just scrap this and write about something totally boring, so don’t let me down folks! So remember, insightful posting please.

Ten pages, even double spaced, is a pretty hefty commitment. You will need a broader topic than the set you listed.

I'd recommend you argue that Pokemon is the best mainstream TCG and use the points you listed as evidence. You could get ten pages out of like four of those points.

What level of essay/class is this? Ten pages would lead me to guess college level or near it.

And you actually don't need names. Citations exist to trace the quote back, so a username should be sufficient. If your teacher says otherwise, they are probably under the same hallucinogen that made my teachers think college professors won't want typed papers. (I think it's called power trip.)

Honestly I wouldn't take anything people say here at all unless you can find it elsewhere/they give you a citation anyway.

Random people on a Pokemon forum are not good sources unless you're going for public opinion, in which case I don't THINK quoting is necessary.

If it is then niimou is right, usernames should be fine.

@ Kayle. You may be right that I need a broader topic to write about, but I am just tired of writing about stuff like the mexican government, recycling, and gun control. I honestly don't know how I would get 10pgs (double space) out of this, but I can try. And yeah, this is for a college level course. I am going for a mixture of data and public opinion, but my prof uses MLA style and we have to have a works cited page at the end (with the names of the authors).

Where else could I find examples of how players really feel other than the 'gym? Or what other topic could I write about that would be enjoyable to write about?

Believe it or not, I've written something similar to that for my English class at uni. If you'd like, I can point you towards some good sources. PM if you're interested.

I don't think you understood what I said. I'm saying don't focus on a single aspect of the TCG - focus on what makes the TCG so good (read: better than M:TG/YGO). THAT could take 10 pages at least.

Pft, ten pages is so not a commitment...You'll be done before you know it. But the key is choosing a topic that doesn't lend itself to more or less than ten pages - you gotta get it just right.

Regarding the possibilities you've listed...I'd go with #1. That seems to have the deepest implications, and allows for the broadest level of exploration. You can even take some general psychological articles and try to apply them to the environment of Pokemon.

I wrote a ten page paper about how the pokemon video games were really weird and adapted into an even weirder manga, so you could write a paper about how a really weird video game was adapted into a really cuddly trading card game...!

In the game, the player is first introduced to Professor Oak giving an excited speech about the “wonderful world of Pokémon”, culminating in him exclaiming “[y]our very own Pokémon legend is about to unfold! Let’s go!” Despite claiming this, the legend does not fully become the player’s after all. Oak instructs the player to fulfill Oak's"dream" that he could not by collecting all Pokémon, stating that this is "a great undertaking in Pokémon history," one special to only the player. The trading card turns this on its face, with one being easily able to buy all the Pokémon cards one would like and Professor Oak discarding the Pokémon in a fit of rage.

(I only actually wrote the last sentence right now, do not worry I did not waste that much time on a jovial post the OP cannot actually use...)

If you're looking for Pokemon TCG sales stats, about the closest you're going to find to accurate data is ICv2 quarterly gaming rankings. It might take some time to look those up.

For video game numbers, you can try trolling the NPD data set, which could take a boatload of time, or you could try using vgchartz.com, which might or might not be the most accurate of sources in the universe.

@mom--thanks for the idea about the blogs.

@kayle--Ok I'll take that into consideration

@bullados,Wilyfungi,cyrus,&cabd--thanks!

If Pokemon doesn't work out for you, I would go with the Legalization of Pot and than choose a side for/agaisinst it. So much information out there, very easy to site. It be a quick 10 pages.
