Shiftry EX vs. Smoochum UF

Here's the setup:

I have a Smoochum UF in play, and the other player has a Shiftry EX in play. Smoochum has no damage counters. I use baby evolution to evolve into Jynx.

Here's the question:
Since I used Baby Evolution, do I take the 2 damage first from Dark Eyes, evolve, and remove the damage, or do I evolve first, then take the 2 damage counters?

There is no damage dealt. By the time that Shiftry ex can place the damage counters, the Pokemon that used Baby Evolution is no longer around.
