I'm surprised that nobody has posted this here yet. But I checked here and near the front page content...

Snivy is the English name of the 5th Gen Grass-type starter
Tepig is the English name of the 5th Gen Fire-type starter
Oshawott is the English name of the 5th Gen Water-type starter

And the region of Isshu has officially been named Unova for the English release of Generation V. All info is thanks to pokemon.com

Nothing, as cards with these Pokemon on them will never be printed, so it will never be useful for TCG players to know their names.

Ok... so if people are going to troll this thread, then a mod can just delete. I see no purpose in members and even other professors to go ahead and troll.

Unless this isn't posted in the video gaming section (if it isn't then disregard the comment completely), he technically isn't in the wrong here.

I personaly like when people mention the games, especially black and white atm.

On topic...I think these names are really really lame...but whatever.

i was going to make a thread about this, i guess someone beat me to it.
BTW this is definitely in the wrong section.

anyway, snivy just doesn't sound right unless you pronouce it so that it rhymes with ivy. tepig is quite creative but it just doesn't sound right either, but the worst name of all three: oshawott is just plain stupid, i don't like these names. but i guess i'll get used to them (in a decade).
anyway, UNOVA doesn't have the same ring to it as hoenn, kanto, johto and sinnoh.
unova sounds like its out of a pokemon ranger game.
but i have a theory on how the name was made:

since isshu (i ain't callin' it unova) is based on america

un= first 2 letters of united states
ov= another way of saying "of"
a= america
unova= united states of america

there you go, that's my opinion of the new names.

Saw the names earlier...eh I'm not gonna lie, Japanese names as usual are superior to what wacky translations they give us. Unova is a pretty cruddy pun off USA; what's so wrong with keeping Isshu as a name, I mean it's not like it's hard to pronounce even in English and at least looks like a word as opposed to Unova. Grass starter name just looks as weird as the Pokemon is (eh, maybe they match that way), and Oshawott sounds vaguely British (British baby sea otter thing? Ugh). Only Tepig really sounds semi-right, but still generally inferior to Pokabu.

SO yeah...I know we'll all eventually begrudgingly get used to them if only because everyone will refer to them as such by their eventual translated name, but doesn't mean we can't hate on them in the meanwhile.

I actually like their names a lot better in the German versions (especially Ottaro and Floink)

Yay for the UK being able to use all European language cards!

How do you pronounce the pig's name? Like "Teh pig" or "tea pig"? (*crosses fingers for the first one*)

The names sound lame. If these are the starter names, what are they going to call the ice cream, garbage can, and mummy pokemon?

I love the pigs name. I'm announcing it as TE-PIG no matter what the official pronunciation really is.

Unova is kind of a weird, but fitting name.

Sadly, the names are very, very bad, and that is also, IMO, the general direction everything has to do with Pokemon is going.

Oshawatt is the best of these three... sounds like "ocelot" with your tongue tied. Snivy and Tepig are terrible names for the Pokemon they'll be most serializing!

People raging yet again over names just like when 4th gen came out.

Nothing to see here.
You people will get used to it.

There's nothing wrong with the names at all.

^ True, when I first saw Oshawott I thought 'what the crap is that??'

When you see him in the anime, you realise he is 100% adorable.

I like these names... portmanteaus are always fun. I look forward to learning all the names, especially that triple ice cream sunday pokemon.

Basic: I scream
Stage 1: They scream
Stage 2: We scream!
