'Spirit of the League'

I know this has been posted in the long MI league thread, but thought this deserves a larger audience:

It has come to our attention that a number of players are building league decks designed specifically to finish games in five minutes or less. These decks are typically built with very few Basic Pokemon, which all have low hit points. The purpose of these decks is to lose as quickly as possible, to maximize the number of points that a player can earn in one session.

The spirit of the league is playing games and having fun, not working the system to earn your prizes as quickly as possible. Players should be discouraged from using decks like this. League Leaders may choose to not reward players with league points if they feel that the spirit of the league has been violated. Please ensure that you are doing this in a fair manner.

If your players have any problems with this policy, please direct them to [email protected].

Thank you,
Pokemon Organized Play

Just off the top of my head...
The best way to do this is play no basics and 12 Fossils and then play one and discard it first turn and bench out. ;) Of course in Unlimited, the 4 Oak, 4 Wrath, 4 Item Finder, 4 Computer Search method works well too. :p

Anyway, I agree that this shouldn't be allowed.
It's not as bad as manipulating the rules by stalling just enough not to be penalized. (and just because it's not enough for the judges to call you on it doesn't mean it's legal!) The stakes are higher in tournament situations, but still, this is another way of bending the rules that should be frowned upon.

Thank you PokeMom, for bringing this announcment to the public's attention.

Yeah I got this E-mail earlier today, before people have their battles I check their decks to make sure there is nothing funny going on with it. I check just in case 2 people wanna play Modified and make sure they have the Modified Legal cards in their decks. I also make sure they play with 6 Prizes in each match and 4 Prizes under certain occassions. I try my best to keep my League fun and keep the spirit of it. :)

uhh, does my houndoom deck, with only 4 'dours count as violation? I don't try to lose, I just try to win ASAP, so I don't clog my deck with other junk.

In my opinion, yes because you are trying to end the game (win or lose) ASAP as you said. It is not fun for your opponents to play this way.

Isn't the goal of most (but not all) decks to set up fast and win quickly? Plus its not like he's trying to purposly lose.

he's playing so little basics for more fire engery and speed, not losing =/

yes, im not speed deckin, im just sayin the more fire nrg, the more chance I got at doin 150 a turn. theres a difference, WISK, and I will keep playin dis deck, sorry.

Actually I love Hedgefoxidna's deck idea. I don't see how such a deck, built to win, is in violation of the "spirit of the league" at all.

Im glad that e-mail was sent out. Now at least we have something to back us on when someone tries that at League to boost their points.

Has this been a big problem at your leagues, leaders? Guess we're too innocent here in Richmond, but none of my 25 or so folks has ever tried anything like this.

yeah, my LL hasnt said anythin bout it being bad, however I do kno someone who is speed decking (1 sparce 59 nrgs) cuff cuff...

Hedge: I don't see your deck as a violation of the spirit.
It is built to win. True, it either succeeds quickly or fails quickly, but that is not it's intent.

I agree with with both posts. You are trying to win, not lose in 10 seconds or less.

The ones you have to watch out for in my league is those who "forfit" thier matches to best thier points. But then i rarely have this problem too.

I can remember when wotc did the book stamping thing way back when. People would play psychic against psychic (always weak to each other) and end the games in 3 minutes. Then run over to the lady with the stamp, get the book stamped, and then start playing again. Eventually the venue (zany brainey) grew so tired of all the pokemon crazines that they eventualy just started handing out all the goodies regardless of how many games were played. After a while there were only a few of us left that came regulary and played. All the free stuff was gone. But we still came to play.

At some point all the free stuff will be gone. But the people who love the game will continue to seek out players to enjoy a competitive game with. The only prize support will be a congratulatory handshake and a "lets play again".

if this happen in my league ,i actaully will not care abuot it ,why

players join for the badges and watever so called free gifts
join for the sake for those things
entertain TO only
wasting time during league but will not do this when tournament

Can I use this one in my sign, I wished I had wrote that one.
