Title: Schnitzel (Steelix)
Format: MD-TR
Author: Patrick Vanlandingham (patthemanvan)
Current Event: City Championships

Hello friends! My name is Patrick Vanlandingham, but you can call me Pat Van. I bring to you today the idea of a highly competitive tier 2 deck, a break from the monotony of the BDIF’s, and a deck that plainly rocks hard *rim shot*. Let me start off by saying I am not a big name in the pokemon community and that my only accomplishments have been a few top cuts and second places. The deck name comes from the cartoon “Chowder”. But anywho, lets get to the deck!

The List
Pokemon: 16
4 Onix SF
3 Steelix Prime UD
2 Uxie LA
2 Chansey PL
2 Blissey PL
1 Azelf LA
1 Chatot MD
1 Skuntank G PL

Trainers/Supporters/Stadiums: 32
2 Junk Arm TM
4 Poke Healer + SF
2 Warp Point MD
2 Luxury Ball SF
3 Expert Belt AR
3 Bebe's Search, RR
2 Twins TM
1 Palmer's Contribution SV
3 Professor Oak's New Theory GS
3 Sage's Training UD
4 Pokemon Collector GS
1 Conductive Quarry SF
2 Ruins of Alph UL

Energy: 12
4 Double Colorless
4 Sp Metal
4 Basic Metal.

Strategy
Steelix’s shining attribute is it’s crazy HP and it’s ability to utilize special metal energy. Build up a Steelix through your energy attachments and Energy Stream. Once you have enough, Gaia Crush for great justice!

The Breakdown

4 Onix SF
The pre evolution to Steelix. This is arguably the best onix and really isn’t used for much except evolving. Better bottom stats make for better basics.

3 Steelix Prime
The heavy metal rock monster man himself. Schnitzel, err….Steelix. At first glance the attack costs look pretty drastic, but if you look a little closer, they really speed up the big lug. For two energy, Energy Stream does 30 damage. However, the damage isn’t the selling point. Energy Stream also gets an energy out of the discard pile and attaches it to steelix. Any energy. It allows you to get back discarded special metals and DCE’s. Gaia Crush is a constant 100 damage and discards your opponents stadiums. Discarding stadiums is pretty awesome by itself, and the high damage is the icing on the cake. Perfect Metal allows you to abuse Skuntank G.

2 Uxie LA
Uxie. It sets up. You draw cards. Can also donk Unown Q. The End.

2 Chansey PL
Used for evolving into Blissey. Pulled punch can one shot Garchomp C for a DCE. It’s quite satisfying to KO a component of the BDIF with a chansey.

2 Blissey PL
Blissey is Steelix’s right hand man,….err, girl. It’s mainly used for it’s nurse call power, allowing the player to heal Steelix by 20 damage every turn. It also helps to get energy in the discard pile for Energy Stream. Return is also a neat trick for when you have no other cards in your hand.

1 Azelf LA
Gets things out of your prizes.

1 Chatot MD
A neat free retreat pokemon with the potential to lock up the opponent.

1 Skuntank G PL
This is your out against Gengar SF’s Fainting Spell. Poison structure + Gaia Crush = KO’d Gengar and a happy Steelix. Plays nicely with Steelix’s ability to discard your opponents stadiums, allowing you to play your own. Skuntank only poisons the opponent due to Steelix’s body. Also helps against pokes with higher HP.

2 Junk Arm TM
Brings back trainers from your discard and allows you to unclog your hand. Junk arm basically gives you a second luxury ball, and works amazingly with PokeHealer+.

4 PokeHealer+ SF
Major healing cards. When two are played at the same time you heal 8 damage counters from your active pokemon. You will most likely only pull this off once or twice during a game, but when a fully charged Steelix heals 80 damage, it’s game changing.

2 Warp Point MD
Allows your active pokemon to get out of sticky situations. Also allows for free KO’s when your opponent sends up an uxie or an azelf.

2 Luxury Ball SF
Gets any pokemon for free. The reason there are two is so that you can get one faster and discard it if one has already been used.

3 Expert Belt AR
Gives Steelix even more HP. It also helps one shot Luxray GL X and hit the magic number of 130 with Skuntank. Since Steelix should (theoretically) never die, the 2 prize penalty shouldn’t be an issue.

3 Bebe’s Search RR
Searches out your evolutions or any other pokemon you want. Also used for putting things back into your deck during late game.

2 Twins TR
Steelix isn’t that fastest thing under the sun. If your opponent takes an early prize or two, Twins allows you to easily recover.

1 Palmers Contribution SV
Amazing for saving yourself from decking out late game. Also useful if a Blissey or Skuntank gets sniped off your bench.

3 Professor Oaks New Theory (PONT) HGSS
Everyone gets bad hands once in a while. PONT lets you get rid of them and gives you a nice big hand refresh.

3 Sages Training UD
Allows you to burn through your deck, netting you some of the unsearchable cards (Expert Belt, PokeHealers, etc.) and letting you discard energies and unnecessary supporters.

4 Pokemon Collector HGSS
Arguably one of the best cards in format. It nets you three basic pokemon, which is great due to the high number of basics. There are four for consistency and they are mainly used early game.

1 Conductive Quarry SF
Energy Recovery for when you can’t or don’t want to use energy stream. Flippy, but can be very useful.

2 Ruins of Alph UD
Gets through Luxray GL’s resistance, allowing you to one shot them with an Expert Belt.

Techs and Alternatives

Onix UL 57
Some people use this onix so they have more attack power. It is mainly used if your area has a lot of Umbreon UD, but you should be able to get around Umbreon with warp points and Skuntank.

Broken Time Space PL
Good if you want to speed up your Steelix. I personally don’t play it since steelix is a stage one and there isn’t much benefit to have a turn 1 Steelix.

Uxie X and Unown Q
Gives the deck a little more draw power. Unown Q would only give uxie free retreat, which would be useful with the level X. IMO either you play both or you don’t play either.

Skarmory UD
A starter for Steelix. For one metal energy you can attach a metal energy to one of your pokemon. The up side to having Skarmory is that you can attach special metals early, but from testing I have found that Skarmory just slows steelix down in the long run.

Match-ups
Luxchomp: 60-40 Your Favor
They will take early prizes, but you have the ability to one shot everything in the deck. Use your twins wisely. Most Luxchomp decks don’t run stadiums so drop a Ruins early and you’re set. They don’t have the attack strength to kill a fully charged steelix and will take prizes by sniping your bench. Be careful about the pokemon you keep down and use your PokeHealers wisely.

Gyrados 65-35 Your Favor
Gyrados is faster than Steelix, but you hit harder. Again they will take early prizes, but once you set up, you’re in for the long haul. A steelix with an expert belt and 2 special metals takes 90 from tail revenge (assuming the gyrados is belted and has 3 discarded magikarps). On your turn you use Blissey to heal 20 damage turning a 2HKO into a 3HKO, where you 2HKO or potentially OHKO (Skuntank) a Gyrados.

VileGar 70-30 Your favor
One of Steelix’s easier match ups. Skuntank is your answer to fainting spell. Gaia Crush for 100 and Poison Structure KO’s a Gengar without activating Fainting Spell. Do your best to play Quarry instead of Alph so Gengar hits you for even less.

Machamp 50-50 Even
They have the potential to donk and that’s never any fun. Machamp also discards Steelix’s Special Metals and DCE’s. Play your energy smart and you can keep up with the prize trade. They will take early prizes but you can come back. It’s a tough match up but it’s not impossible.

Closing
Steelix is an overlooked deck that has a fighting chance against all the BDIF’s. If you’re looking for something powerful yet still under the radar, Steelix is the deck for you.
Thanks for Reading.
Goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow.

1st i think you should take out one of the onix and put in a quasire g for the tech against blazekin fb which is the worst match up for it

Matchups are incorrect. Spacing is bad. Otherwise, solid information. I hate your list too, way too "theorymon standard"

Hm... I really like Steelix, nice to see an article about it. ^^

But as a player who has some experience with Steelix and variants of it, there are still some cards I'm missing.

Judge + Volkner > PONT + Sage in this deck. Why? Judge is great disruption against SP and Gyarados, most times you have less problems to be on 4 cards than your opponent has. Volkner combines very well with Blissey and gives an additional discard option for energy.

Black Belt - you need it for the revenge knockout against Blaziken FB Lv.X. 30 (Energy Stream) + 40 (Black Belt) + 40 (from Jet Shot) = 110.

Lucian / Shaymin - not necessary, but should be at least mentioned. Can be great in some situations.

Seeker - good in combination with Shaymin, and also helpful to take up Blissey against Vilegar.

Call Energy - never play without unless the deck really can't use it!

Warp Energy - should be an obvious choice in a deck like Steelix, remember you can't use Warp Point while in a trainer lock.

Why 4 Collector and 3 Bebe if you already have a 4-3 line? I'd defninitely play it the other way around.

I only really looked at the match ups and think that you should have included:

Dialga Tank
Regigigas
Sablock

I don't like the fact that you don't give it one bad match up. People might base it off of those match ups, and think that it's BDIF. It clearly isn't, but if it hasn't got one bad match up, why not?

Gyrados 65-35 Your Favor
Gyrados is faster than Steelix, but you hit harder. Again they will take early prizes, but once you set up, you’re in for the long haul. A steelix with an expert belt and 2 special metals takes 90 from tail revenge (assuming the gyrados is belted and has 3 discarded magikarps). On your turn you use Blissey to heal 20 damage turning a 2HKO into a 3HKO, where you 2HKO or potentially OHKO (Skuntank) a Gyrados.

I didn't get this. 90 damage - 20 (Blissey) = 70 net damage on Steelix. Next turn they hit for another 90, which makes it 90+70=160 damage = enough to 2HKO a belted Steelix.

Other than that, fun article to read! It's always nice with non-toptier deck ideas.

'Standard' lists are a lot better for the front page than weird teched out stuff. They're supposed to be a starting point. That's where a lot of articles go wrong imo.

Match ups are a bit biased, and the strategy isn't exactly in-depth, but this is a decent place to start with Steelix and that's good enough.

Hmh the article gives a solid piece of information, but I didn't like it very much,
because
-I also think that the spacing is not really good
-The list could be better, as things like Judge just have to be played in here
-The Matchups are not really tested out well, because actually things like LuxChomp play counters, like Drifblim and then the Matchup would be different, etc. and please also you should write about at least one bad Matchup, because more people will believe in these numbers
-I think that it isn't really a good article to put on the front page, because it is very short, has some errors, not good spacing and even if you worked hard to make it it wasn't changed by the Mods, just copy and pasted in here.
(I know that from my FA, because they just moved it to the FP, without changing anything and for me that's strange, because my article is not the best and the other articles too, but I don't see them beeing corrcted by the mods -.-)

Anyways well done. ;D
-Filipp.

First of all, good article! I enjoyed reading it.

I really think that you need to address how to deal with Blaziken FB Lv. X. It poses a huge problem to this deck, and even decks like HoPe or LuxChomp with a 1-1 Blaziken have been known to beat Steelix with only a small Blaziken line.

What happens to Vilegar once they Shadow Room your Skuntank and you are forced to attack with Steelix because you can't play Warp Point because of Vileplume? Also, if they Level Up Gengar, how are you going to get the extra damage to KO the 140-HP Gengar Lv. X?

Also, I don't know if it's an error, but your picture for Pokehealer is actually Pokedrawer (at least that's the way that it appeared on my computer.) However, thanks for pointing out to me how Junk Arm can combo with Pokehealer- for some reason, I never noticed it until now.

Again, good article!

Thank you everyone for your feedback. This being my first article i didn't really know how indepth i was supposed to go or how much feedback i was going to get from the people who reviewed it. I'm taking this one as a learning experience and seeing what i need to fix.

@Elite 4 Allen - The pokehealers is a personal preference and me trying to make the deck as not flippy as possible.

@Alex2k - Ya, it is pretty standard. But i mean if you read articles looking for perfect lists.......

@ShadowGuard - I really like the blackbelt and wish i'd thought of it. lol.

@Deoxys - Not many of those are played in my area, so i only really listed what's won the most down here.

@Yuna - Math error on my part. Sorry

@Darkmot - Ya, i though i would have gotten some feedback about it before it went straight to the front. I apologize for the lack of depth.

@Nekizalb - Blaziken X is the biggest threat to this deck and i can't believe i left it out. The sooner he hits the field the scarier he is. Most the luxchomps around here play a 1-1 and don't bring it out until mid game when i have at least 2 special metals and 2 healers in hand.

Stopped reading after the first two words of this article, and had to scroll down to comment.

Excellent.

Edit after enjoying:

3 Expert Belt AR; Gives Steelix even more HP. It also helps one shot Luxray GL X and hit the magic number of 130 with Skuntank. Since Steelix should (theoretically) never die, the 2 prize penalty shouldn’t be an issue.

This seems like it should be two different thoughts. Steelix will swing for 130 with a belt + poison structure for non-SP's. Unless you're playing Crobat's or plus powers, I don't think it can one-shot a Luxray X.

Thanks for the article.

I would have tried to include those, as they're still good decks, and just because they're not played in your area, doesn't mean they aren't played for anyone else.
