Strategy to having 5 Pokemon vs 6?

I watched the Junior Finals video... and I noticed that the Junior who lost had only 5 Pokemon... was this because one was deemed an illegal Pokemon, or did he do this out of choice for some odd reason?

There is no strategy to having 5 pokemon, you could take a random pokemon that had Status infliction or stat lowering moves if you didn't care about your last pokemon... (Thus speaks the n00b. If I'm wrong, please don't tell me what an idiot I am.=P)

well since u can only have four pokemon to battle with maybe the fifth one is for a pokemon that can counter his team or a different part of his strategy just like having a sixth but he didnt feel like he should have another poke to prepare for the match and stuff cuz he knew his five could take out the other teams

I saw a post to this effect awhile ago on BMGf...

There is absolutely no strategy to only having five Pokémon on a team when you could have six. I mean, even just adding one glass cannon, such as Espeon, Alakazam, or whatnot, could completely turn the game around. As opposed to an empty spot? No contest.

No, there was nothing wrong with his team. Grace in the semi finals only had 4 items, when she was alowed 6. They just do not feel the need for the extras, or maybe they would start to second guess themselves.

Really, concerning the VGC, you're likely to have your core 4 Pokemon you'll use in about every battle anyways; the last 2 are just sorta there if you feel switching one out would be better.
