Team Battle as a format?

Good to see this thread getting so much interest. I just wanted to comment on a few things...

Re: Separate tournaments/Having to choose between tournaments -- What if Team Tournaments were set-up after the regular tournament completes, or maybe after a few rounds? I understand not every venue has the time for two full tournaments, so maybe a 2v2 tournament could start after halfway through the regular tournament, so players can choose to drop from the regular tournament and play in the 2v2 if they're not doing well, but don't necessarily have to commit to that from the beginning?

Re: 2v2 during leagues -- We play at least 1 2v2 battle at our league every week. The younger players are really, really into them. I think this could be a great way to introduce younger/inexperienced players to premier events, especially, as someone else said, if they could team with a parent/older sibling, etc. Although that might lead to some age division problems in premier events.

Re: Non-premier 2v2 tournaments -- Great idea, I've been wanting to run one for a long time. I dunno if they can be sanctioned, but if they can, I'd recommend everyone who is in support of this idea to try and set one up at their local league, as it would show that this format is popular, and might convince the powers that be to work on making this a premier format.

Good discussion everybody. :D

Well, I don't think that'd be all-inclusive. As a judge, the most common thing I see before an event begins are straight-faced parents who are dropping off and asking "When do I need to be back to pick the kids up?" and... they want EXACTIMENTS (not guesstimates!)

Right off the bat, you'll exclude half of your seniors from participating and some younger masters.

Then, the older masters may not have that additional event available in the ToDo today agenda.

Another issue I see with that is judging/staffing.
Your judges will be overseeing that premier event and it takes a good judge (I imagine) to be at that team event (someone who has, actually, invested in learning those rules!)

So... verdict = have it on an entirely different day other than premier event (unless your crowd just ROLLS like that... )

@R_A Great points. I don't think any answer is perfect, I was just throwing that out there. Having the tournaments on a completely different day is a good idea although I imagine it will cost POP, TOs, and players all more money and time, which they may not be able to afford. Thanks for the reply.

Love the discussion that's going on here!

I'm glad to see so many others interested in this. Some people have brought up the point that team battles would take longer than normal battles so it may be difficult to coordinate them. In my experience, 50 minutes would be a reasonable limit for a team game. However, since there would effectively be half the normal amount of entries into the tournament (instead of 100 players there are 50 teams) less rounds of swiss could be played to make up for the extra time needed per round. (What does everyone think?)

I also think that the rules ARE a bit confusing right now although some of them are necessary (such as the poison working only before and after the afflicted's turn. I do think that the rules preventing teammates from seeing each other's hands and openly strategizing defeat the purpose of the format.

As for pairing people up at tournaments, I think that is a great idea. Switching partners at the same tournament seems odd to me, but if anyone shows up alone, they should be paired with another single entrant. What to do with the extra person (if there is one though)?

@Arcanine: Good idea on the time-saving ideas.

As far as the rules, I haven't looked over the documents in a while, but the way I understand it is just that, because it's not a premier format, some things have slipped by getting rulings, and some rules don't make sense, etc. I think if this were ever made a premier format all of that would be taken care of ASAP.

I totally agree about the not being able to see your partners hand. It only makes sense that you would sit on the same side of the table and be able to talk, strategize, etc.

I don't think there should be any problem with team pairings. If you can't find a partner to play with you, you probably shouldn't be entering anyway, y'know? I'm sure there'd be some people that would be willing to partner with you, of course, but I don't think it should be up to the PTO or whoever to make sure that a willing participant is present.

These would be GREAT side events at NATS and WORLDS !

@RA Good point! It'd also be pretty cool to see a team draft. Great idea.

In fact, it could be a big SUNDAY thing.
TEAM QUALIFIERS on Friday and main event on SUNDAY!!

That would give people ALL THREE DAYS to really have something to be excited about
(however, I DO find league play pretty exciting too!)

But, it's like spades/hearts. You'd practice with your partner all year long for the "BIG TEAM TOURNEY" at the end of the season/Nats ... winners get a free ride to WORLDS for Friday and Sunday Team play ??

Can we field this one?

Hey, anything is possible. Chances are it won't be very probable however. You can talk it up all you like though since the more that are interested makes the probability higher. Personally I would love to see this happen as a side event at huge events, but I don't see it happening at Nats (Us, Canadian or otherwise) without sponsorship and a decent set of judges. Perhaps it might be a good idea to bring this up to POP in an email campaign: [email protected]

As for random TO's starting a few events, I would personally suggest a separate day specifically set aside for these - just due to my own experience with it. It was talked up for months, but when the time came to run it, because it was scheduled after another event, too many dropped out to get a real event going.
