TEAM EXETER Report #2: Gyarados again!

Arcanite

New Member
Hi there Pokegym, I'm Arcanite, and I am one of the four members of theam exeter who decided to go to nats this year. (I was the one with the Arcanine T-Shirt).
After playing Gyarados for most of the year, i decide it would be stupid to change it now, and I decide to stick with it, as do Alex (the other master) and Chris (one of the two seniors). Phil, the other senior plays Magnechamp.

The Exeter Gyarados lists are unconventional, with no SSU, with warp energy/seeker to heal Gyarados. Also, A Second Azelf to combat bad prizes. Black Belt and Pluspower aid in getting knockouts. Lost remover is great in Mirror (which was irrelevant, and against Magnechamp, which we expected a lot of. It is also good fore getting rid of DCE against Luxchomp. We included cyclone energy and Warp point to gust up weak pokes which we can KO for cheap prizes. (I.e. Luxchomp rarely has >90HP pokes on the bench, as does Gyarados)

3x Warp Energy
1x Cyclone Energy

We drove up Saturday afternoon, and stayed in kettering travelodge, playtested, me alex and dad went to a restaurant pup which we had vouchers for about 15 mins away to find it was over 18 only.:frown: Anyway, got good sleep, and playtested a bit more and left early for Wickstead Park.

Registration took ages, but at an event with ~200 players, what do you expect. After some faffing, we sat down for round 1.

96 masters, 7 rounds top 16

Rd. 1 Vs Dialgachomp (David G.?)

I had a god start with Sabeleye, Collector, BTS and VS Seeker in my starting hand, and got Gyarados swinging for 90 afetr I topdecked it. Unfortunately David Koed a pixie with Dragon Rush early, and got a remove lost on Gyarados, removing the rescue energy to KO it. Luckily for me, I had Junk Arm and Rescue in my hand. David just ran out of steam and a couple of lost removers got me the win.

1-0

Rd. 2 Vs Vilegar with Slowking (???)

Again, started Sableye, anfd got swinging for 90 turn 3. Hit a fainting spell Gengar for 100 with a pluspower with bat in my hand for the KO, but he leveled up, and when i tail revenged, he got heads.:nonono:
He Got slowking out the next turn, and started to control my topdecks. i couldn't recover Gyarados until it was too late.

1-1

Rd. 3 Vs. Sablelock (?????)

Just got disrupted. Got Gyarados out with a rescue energy, but couldn't get the karps in the discard pile.:frown: Eventually I got them in there, but he had Garchomps. I think I got it down to 2 prizes left for me though.

1-2

Lunch Break:

Was a bit depressed here. discovered that alex had gone 3-0 beating a Magnezone Yanmega with Gyarados, which cheered me up! Phil and Chris (Team Exeter seniors division) were both 2-1, and we saw the organisers putting mats on every other table! The Tables that didn't have mats had P!P Hats or HGSS Binders (Lugia+Ho-oh, P!P, for trade if interested)).

Rd.4 Vs Jumpluff (?????)

Binder. :frown: No mat for me. However, my opponent let me have the binder (instead of flipping for it) as he already had 3.
Game started off well, but he was leaf guarding first, preventing me from OHKOing him, then KOing me with Mass attack. To add insult to injury, he managed to Q a shaymin, level it up, and retreat it after a KO. After Killing the 2nd Jumpluff, putting me 1 prize ahead he used sunflora to look for his 3rd pluff, and then promptly folded, saying the third, and last, was in the prizes, having been unable to aquire a 4th, and not playing Azelf. Bad luck for him. (In his next game, he had 2 pluff, 1 Skiploom and a Hoppip prized).

2-2

Things were starting to look up, I could still make cut if i won my final three games, and having seen plenty of Dialga, and no Magnezone I thought i was in with a very good chance.

Rd. 5 Vs. Dialgachomp (Janet, PokeMum and LL)

I basically rolled over her, but we had a very nice chat. And I let her get a prize when she lost removered my rescue energy on a Gyarados that had 90 when she had Ambipom with DCE and Bat active (She Played Warp Point instead of retreating, so i pointed it out to her, since i was sure i had the game won already). I recovered immedidieately, then dropped cynthia. getting rid of my junk hand, and giving me 2 pluspowers and Cyclone energy, which won me the game after she sent up a Belted Chomp X to take a hit. Great friendly opponent

3-2

Rd. 6 Vs. Luxchomp (Nathan McL/ nnann)

After a bad start, then epic comeback from him, we got to 1-1. He Dropped Cynthia, and Shuffled his deck of about 25-20 cards. He drew the three cards, of which there was only one copy each for the game. Great opponent, and was very apologetic afterwards. (Great build, definitely personalised) He went on to make 5-2, but miss the cut.

3-3

I knew i couldn't make the cut, but was determined to make it a positive record (my original target)

Rd. 7 Vs. Luxchomp (????)

Can't remember much, but i remember that I used black belt twice (VS Seeker) and a key lost remover when he had 1 prize and I had 3 enabled me to bring it back and I eventually won after belting for the first time all day, taking the last 3 prizes with Belted Gyarados!

4-3

Overall I had a great day, getting a great record for my first tournament outside of exeter (not being a direct contest between alex and I) and Alex made top Cut in our first year of masters! Phil and Chris finished 3-3, after Chris donked phil in round 5 and Chris got hammered by 4 T2 rampardos in round 6)

PROPS AND SLOPS:

Props:
Alex Chris Phil and Dan for testing
Alex for beasting it into top cut!
Ian (NoPoke for a great tournament)
My opponents for being very friendly
Meeting Zystral off German Koffing.com
Winning a Binder
Phil Buying a mat for £10
Not being donked all day!

Slops
Dan for not coming,
The Shop for not opening until the moment pairings were announced, and taking 2 Hours to 'set up' (No Uxie to help), and being rude when i was looking at the stuff before they opened.
The North for being cold and boring.

Well this is certainly quicker to the point then my report, but at least I spelt all my words right! Well done for getting a positive record for your first tournament outside of Exeter! I'm surprised Nathan didn't make top cut as his deck was well thought out.

I was your Round 6 opponent, not 3 by the way. That was a really good game, although it was kind of weird at the same time, with me not drawing anything at the beginning then hitting the cards from the Cynthia. Good Job on 4-3, it was cool to meet someone I only know by their screen name and hopefully we can play again at a tournament next year :thumb:.
