The Choking Game

Cardkeeper

<a href="http://pokegym.net/forums/showpost.php?p=
For those of you who don't know, theres this thing going around called the Choking Game. It is where a teen ties a rope or belt to something such as a closet pole or bunk bed and cuts the circulation from their neck to the brain for about 10 seconds and then releases the pressure, letting the blood flow quickly to the brain. What this does is causes a high, similar to that of Pot/weed and similar drugs, without any practical sideeffects EXCEPT for the fact that kids black out for several seconds after the very short high happens. Normally they wake up disorieted and untie the belt and everything is fine. Kids find this as a very "good" way to get high without doing major damage to their bodies. However, this is not the case, it can cause the ultimate harm. Eternal Harm, also known as death. When the kids black out, they are dissoriented when they come up. When the child blacks out, if they are alone they can fall their necks forward or backwards, causing them to basically hang themselves. If this happens they never wake up, and in alot of cases are mever discovered and are considered Suicides. My family and another family have been friends since my parents where in Kindergarden and their kids (Me and my friend) grew up together. The other family had other family we knew but werent close with. Their son Christian died of the Choking Game. I didnt know him, but it was horrible to see our family friends so devestated. Then, just a few days ago, my friend died of this stupid game. They found him hanging in his closet. Thats the 2nd family friend I've lost to this stupid game within the last 2 years. The police say kids are dying of this game every week. Ive lost a friend, all to a dumb 20 second high. Now instead of going to school I'm going to his wake tomorrow. SPREAD THE WORD! JUST BECAUSE YOU DONT USE DRUGS DOESNT MEAN IT ISNT DANGEROUS! YOU CAN DIE!

I posted it here simply because I want to spread Choking Game awareness. Helping even one kid from potentially hanging themselves will help. Help stop this deadly "game".

Teens keep trying to find out new ways to harm themselves all in the name of a high rush. It sickens me personally to the core.
This is on level with taking in vodka through the eyes...

I remember hearing about this about 15 years ago when I was younger. I didn't think people were still doing it. If you are going to risk killing yourself by doing something like this then something is really wrong. As Cardkeeper said, sure it might give you a high for a few seconds, but why risk hurting yourself and possibly the ones you love (if you die) just for a few seconds of happiness? There are far more productive things to do in your life that aren't as dangerus.

This is nothing new. The pessimist in me says to let Social Darwinism take its toll; the optimist in me says to make your children acutely aware of how horrible this is.

Nevertheless, Cardkeeper's intent is a very good one. Keep at it.

This is perfect proof of the "It won't happen to me" complex that many kids have. Anyone who puts themselves in danger for the sake of fun is a dead man IMO. If somebody is willing to do this knowing the risks, that person should see some serious help. People like that cannot survive in the real world and may end up killing themselves by choice. What disgusts me is that this "game" (dare I call it that) is found abundantly on youtube and the comments are often among the lines of "Only the weak ones die from this game". I would also believe that kids who need this 10 second high are probably already very depressed. Anyone who is need of a high that badly probably hates life already... so eh. Just another way to show how our world is messed up...

Thanks a lot for the post... spread the word to parents and kids. Obviously, some kids will try it regardless of the consequences, but some of us (the more intelligent ones) will hopefully see this and think twice. Sorry about your losses and thanks for the post ;D

I understand that Social Darwinism is there, you can't save everybody. But theres not just kids who want a high doing this. Kids also use this technique for things unappropriate to talk about on the Gym, if you catch my flow. This means NO kid is safe, good kids who are just experimenting are DYING. 14, 15 16 year old kids, dead. Hundreds die of this every year. Even if you save one life, you've made a difference, all you have to do is tell them how it isn't worth it and of the dangers. And you'll especially be happy if it was YOUR kid, nephew, neice or good friend that you save.

Let me clarify a bit I guess. It's not that I don't want to just let people die off for their own ignorance or anything. But I sort of take the stance that if someone doesn't know better - for any reason - then that is, for the most part, their own fault. They are not victims of anything.

Ideally you raise your children with enough common sense not to do anything that amounts to self-damage or self-destruction, but the line can get hazy, and when you cross it, you cross it. So help you when that happens.

When I hear the classic 21-shots games, or similar activities (now, including this one - thanks Cardkeeper), being brought up, I'm not afraid to butt into a conversation and I am ruthless in pointing out how stupid I think it is. If they have a problem with that, there's really nothing more I can do. =\

This is THE most stupidest game I have ever heard of. Whoever does this needs to be smacked upside the head. I'm really sorry for your loss though. It must be incredibly hard.

I've lost a friend to suicide before. Legitimate suicide. It's incredibly difficult. Your situation isn't any easier and I hope you'll be ok.

Damn. I thought this was a thing of the past, but apparently not. Good for you, spreading the word Cardkeeper. Thanks.

I swam in 40 degree water for half an hour and freaked out, got near hypothermia, and a lot of unusual symptoms. It felt amazing, best moment of my life.

I did this in middle school a few times (peer pressure lol). It's not even that great. If you are considering doing it, only do it if there is a group of people. One person chokes you really hard for a few seconds and people are there to catch you if you fall, etc. And at my school, kids were doing this in groups everyday. No one ever got hurt (because we did it in groups). Doing it alone is obviously stupid.

But yeah, it's not even worth it in the first place. Killing brain cells ain't cool, kids.

^Rokman, I've got this weird picture of you younger like getting choked by Cameron in middle school and you're like screaming. Just thought I'd share.

Your right choking in general is pretty safe over all, I've never been in a controlled situation where I've seen a person in danger. The problem is not many know how to choke somebody properly. If a Black Belt comes up to me and says he needs somebody to choke for a demonstration, I won't hesisitate. He knows how to perform it properly, and second he's doing it for an actual purpose. Why in the world somebody would let some kid choke them that swears he knows how to do it because he watched Walker Texas Ranger last night is beyond me.

Your intentions are great and I applaud the thought behind them. However, you just informed thousands of kids of a new way to 'get high' they didn't know about before. Kids ALWAYS have an 'it won't happen to me' sort of attitude. While this may keep one kid from hanging themselves, countless others will try this now out of curiosity if for no other reason.

Like I said, I know your intentions were good here, but you really need to look at things from all angles of cause and effect before posting something like this. Especially on a child friendly forum.
