The long forgotten symbol

This might be a little obvious, but I'm still cusious about it. When I looked at all my Pokemon-e cards, I started noticing something. There was no "1st Edition." Now I know that some of you are going "Well DUH," but I'm just curious as to what happened to the 1st Edition card format (by card format, I mean the little symbol that was at the right side of the cards).

It was scrapped after Neo Destiny as it wasn't contributing to card sales.

But here's something very weird: exactly when 1st Edition stopped here (US/Europe) it started in Japan. Yep, Japan's new sets all have 1st Edition.

I don't get it.
