Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

The unreleased Legendary Collection 2 set

Long-time veterans of the game will recall that the original Legendary Collection set was made entirely of cards reprinted from Base, Jungle, Fossil, and Team Rocket, many of which were fan favorites, and was released after these sets had been rotated out. During WotC's last few months with Pokémon in 2003, I recall hearing that they were planning a Legendary Collection 2 set, but for 7 long years, the thought never once crossed my mind... until today, when I ran across the article for it on Bulbapedia. According to that article, it was going to consist of cards from the Gym and Neo sets. It also states that Nintendo is the one who chose not to release the set.

Does anyone have any further information on specifically what cards or sets were going to be included or exactly why Nintendo chose not to release it? I realize there probably wasn't a great deal of information leaked about LC2, but after reading the article, I'm super curious. :)

Thanks!

If I remember correctly, WotC was supposed to make an English-only set called Jamboree or Cross-Trainer or something, and also release a lot of Team Rocket and VS cards that were not released States-side. But they had a falling out with Nintendo because the Japanese people could not stand the DCI and the infamous Wizards stuff happened.

i'd be amazed if anyone knew exactly was going to be included in these sets...unless you know someone who was working for WotC at the time. I would LOVE to know also...

Yeah, one of Jambree and CrossTrainer (I don't remember which) was going to be cards designed by WotC and drawn by North American artists. But when the gongshow started, PCL changed their mind.

The only reason I would have wanted LC2 is that they could have reprinted and fixed Slowking.

After further exploring on Bulbapedia, it appears that there were 4 unreleased WotC sets:

  • Crosstrainer (7/10/2001) - a "Base Set 3" that would feature every gen 1 Pokémon as well as 30 cards unreleased in English, such as the Vending Machine promos
  • Legendary Collection 2 (late spring 2003)
  • "Unnamed Wizards Set" (mid-late 2003) - a set consisting entirely of cards designed and illustrated by WotC
  • Jamboree (fall 2003) - a set consisting of some WotC-made cards and other cards unreleased in English, such as the Vending Machine promos; box and pack designs had apparently been created and finalized

I find this very interesting... it's a shame that we'll probably never know more.

I think it was more of them alienating players by eliminating the 15+ age group to make players switch to MTG and not really doing what they were suppose to be doing as far as releasing the cards. There was good reason that WOTC lost the game. If they had held on to it the TCG would have died. It was VERY close to death when Nintendo came in and decided to try to save it. Had it been another year, we might very well be playing something totally different for a hobby. I don't have the numbers on it, but I am sure someone does, maybe POP or maybe some of the mods on this board can verify how bad it really was.

There is a chart from WotC that I've incorporated into this Pokemon history article:

http://pokegym.net/forums/showthread.php?t=32321

At it's low point, you can see how badly the Pokemon TCG had fallen.

It is currently doing better than MTG and, I think, has been at least since DP came out.

I'd love to get more updated numbers...

These two sound like the same thing.
There's no way that they'd have two sets with such similar elements coming out at virtually the same time.

At the point of repeating myself once again, are you ever going to continue on that? I know that you planned to write more but haven't had a shot, any chance that still might happen?

BTW, Pop, I still love that graphic. Never, ever lose that thing.

Kind of off-topic, but if you had 1 share of the parent companies that produce magic and YGO and pokemon, could you obtain sales figures from previous years, even rough ones, so that we could have more accurate comparisons?

Part 3 is halfway done.

Finally!

Oh dear - does this mean I need to honour my side of the bargain and write another collecting article?

I asked someone if US subsidiary companies have to produce public accounts... the answer I got is no. Unless Hasbro (owners of WotC, makers of M:TG) or Nintendo (for Pokémon) decide to provide the information, we're out of luck.

1% is a lot of money though, the company would certainly want to know who you are if you own that much, so maybe...

Sorry if I'm not supposed to post since this is a month old. I'm not here very often anymore :)

I think I had posted a "set-list" for LC2 at some point- still searching for it. LC 2 was old stuff plus a few new ones (VS/Vending series).

"Jamboree" was the WOTC set using some of their artists plus other outside folks. Completely new. This and LC2 was to fill up the schedule for the rest of the year until the R/S set made its debut the following year.

Cross-Trainer was supposed to be a combination of the two but was just kind of a preliminary announcement on something that WOTC was trying to develop.

Ah, that's one thing I miss about WotC though...they had nice big sets. Compare that to the routinely sub-100 card sets we get now...which is both a good and bad thing in ways I suppose.

soslowpoke:
Was this a list that was released by WotC at some point (and if so, where) or is this a guesstimate based on some other clues, and if so, what were they?

Basically, I'm looking to determine how definitively this list should be considered.
