So, after playing in DE states the last 3 years (the only 3 I have played in it) and getting 3rd/3rd/2nd respectively, I decide to go there instead of NY because I seem to do better. I was planning on playing GG, but decided to switch to Banette. I playtested with a friend and used some of the info off of Jokerboi's great FL states report. I figured it was the best choice as GG was huge and Magmortar wasnt.
Anyways on to the Report -
R1 - Evan B. (Blaziken/Catty)
He has trouble setting up and I start with an eh hand. I take the first few prizes with Banette, and he eventually tries to mount a comback, but I had taken too many prizes earlier via 1 Banette (5) for him to comeback.
Win 1-0
R2 - Will (Magmortar)
I dont donk him and he takes the first prize which leads to me being down the whole game and losing.
Loss 1-1
R3 - Casey (GG)
So, I finally get the matchup I want. I get a quick Banette and start running thru his Psychic weak pokemon. My crystal beaches hurt him, but he plays windstorm. He ends up RC into Dusknoir warp pointing me and then shuffling my benched Banette into my deck along with koing my Shuppet. I was up 1 prize left to 4 so while he may have been able to come back, he didnt have time as that was called during my next turn.
Win 2-1
R4 - Shaw Levin - Shawofmordor (GG)
Shaw gets a decent setup but I was able to get a few Banette's up plus lock in the crystal beach. He takes the first prize or two but I end up running through him after he does that. The lack of being able to play DRE/Scramble as they should be is bad enough for him to not be able to keep up with the high energy costs.
Win 3-1
R5 - Ian R. (GG)
I get a decent start and end up locking in an early crystal beach. I get up a few Banette's and start koing his pokemon, he cant get a legitamate setup/attacker and I run through his psy weak pokemon.
Win 4-1
T8 - Evan B. (Blaziken/Catty)
G1 - We both get decent starts, however I play down 1 too many basics and his continous 50 and 10 to the bench lands him most of his prizes. I end up have to conceed the game because I am so far behind.
G2 - I learn from what mistakes I made in G1 and start off with a decent hand and go quick Banette. I am able to take 5 prizes to his 2 or 3, and I am able to Warp Point for my last prize.
G3 - We both know there is about 5-8 minutes left, so he goes first and I use Roseanne's to get Shuppet and an enery I think I then attach and pass, He goes and CFF with Pachirisu for a 2nd time. I evolve into Banette and attach a 2nd energy after retreating my active baltoy. Next turn I ko his active Pachirisu. Time is called during his turn. He needs 1 card to tie the game. He Stevens/Cosmic Draws with Claydol/Energy Draw with Delcatty. He doesnt get it and conceeds.
Win 5-1 (6-2)
T4 - Matt G. - Snowball21 - (Mirror)
He was my "playtest" partner during the last few days and we decide to play the same deck card for cards. We would of liked to play in the finals, but T4 was good as he went 5-0 in swiss. The other side was 2 GG so the winner would most likely win the tournament.
G1 - He gets a god start to my crappy one.
G2 - We both start with Minun, but I have a better overall hand, plus the Wager losses do him in.
G3 - Same as G2 (yeh explain that one, I dont know) except for an early Wager helps me make a comeback and eventually win.
Win 6-1 (8-3)
T2 - Adam C. (GG)
G1 - I get a decent start. I ko his active Furret T2 and he proceeds to use scramble with Gallade 2nd attack to KO my Banette. I have a Banette on the bench with 1 energy that I bring up. I drop the Lake Boundary and OHKO his Gallade, he struggles to setup as I lock in a Crystal Beach the next turn. He cant do anything so I win.
G2 - I start with 2 Shuppet and pretty much nothing else. I play a beach T1 as he elects to go first. I pretty much draw only Energy and Shuppet all game. However, I kept drawing into my Wagers, but when I used them I got crap. He would "Keen Eye" and I would wager before he got a chance to use them twice. I end up using my 3 Banette Swarm to slowing take prizes. He ends up being in to far of a hole to come back especially with the Crystal Beach Lock.
Win 7-1 (10-3)
So, I win my first states and I am very happy with my choices and it counter the current area's metagame. Matt gets 3rd and I get 1st. Not too shabby.
Props -
Jon J. for driving us
Matt G. for helping me test the deck
Anyone who gave me advice on the deck, you know who you are.
Jokerboi for that great report that helped my decide and gave me a few pushes in the correct direction.
TO/Judging.
My Opponents
Matt for pulling the Cresselia Lv. X out of his first of 8 packs and wanting to sell the rest of them.
Slops -
Traffic on the way back.
Losing to the Magmortar when I lent the cards to him.
That is all I can think of.
Thanks for reading,
Drew
