Thinking of skipping Nationals, and why others/you are too

Has anyone else tried to book a hotel room for Nationals?

Incredibly hard. It's looking like a much worse nationals already, but this fact is only compounded by the expected format for the event. The FAQ describes the format tersely- "MD-on".

What does this mean?

I am sure many of you have been contemplating and playing, goldfishing, and theorymoning the impact of the rules changes. Some are just silly- they change rare candy into pokemon breeder, and there's a great poke ball swap going on. A friend of mine asked a great question, "why not just print the card the other card instead of changing every card into one that already exists?" Who knows.

Sableye is incredible, and without a first turn for the opponent to use call energy, try to draw or use attacks like pitch dark the possibility of losing on your first turn is even more prevalent. The days of old flippymon will be back, and more games than ever will be decided on the flip of the coin. Stage 2 decks are inherently disadvantaged by the change in rare candy, so it seems it will be an even more lopsided favoritism towards basic-based decks. We will probably see another basic deck vs basic deck at Finals in Nationals for the THIRD YEAR in a row. Luxray in the top 2 finals for 3 years running is more domination than Gardevoir, and nothing was really learned from that.

I don't want to dish out a lot of money on a room close by, or have to be inconvenienced by the distance and other more modestly priced available rooms just to lose multiple games before I even get to draw a card. I am sure others feel the same way as I do.

If I had to choose between Nationals and Worlds, I feel like I would just choose Worlds now. To make it to the top 8 to even earn an INVITE (and not a trip), you have to win 5 rounds of single elimination, (assuming a total of 128 participants in a top cut). If there are 8 invites given out in the grinder, which is also single elimination best of three, then why not just try to push the 7 rounds and best a field of potentially 512 players and clinch a top 8 invite for the next day? Seems easier than wading through 8 or 9 rounds of swiss and needing to win 5 or 6 rounds to get the trip/invite anyhow.

I feel like this will be the worst Nationals I have ever been to, and this is not the kind of feeling I want to have when playing a game. A lot of my friends and fellow players feel the same way. This is the lowest point they have ever seen the state of the game at, the least amount of fun had in a number of years when playing, and with a stagnation of playable decks that makes us all gag.

It's time to start finalizing plans to go, and I am unsure if I really want to. Anyone else?

I'm just gonna say...I'm not sure that I have ever seen the general player base this discontent with things. Just looked around the gym a bit, tons of posts regarding ban lists and sableye math and format gripes.

It's not even the format that really bothers me, to be honest. I know that P!P is working hard to come up with a solution that will appease at least most of the people who play this game.

The hotel situation, though. At least at previous large-scale events, if I did bad, I could head back to the hotel with some friends and enjoy the city. Right now, it just looks BAD in Indy. I loved it so much last year :(

It is now reprinted as Breeder.

I love the game so much, I won't miss Nats. I've certainly considered it tho.

Let me ask a Q:
How is Rare Candy being effected?

Seriously? Man, you are really uninformed!

Rare Candy used to do this:

Basic=Stage 1/Stage 1=Stage 2/Basic=Stage 2

Now:

Basic=Stage 2 only

and now, it also can't be used on a Pokémon which was just placed down on the bench.

Edit:

Porii, you beat me again. *sigh*

The hotel situation is completely unworkable. I don't know what else is going on, but there is nothing available unless you want to pay 360 per night. That is the biggest bummer. About Nats.

I'M SORRY! I DON'T REALLY KEEP TRACK OF NEW RULES, JUST THE ONES I KNOW! These new rules will make my head hurt!

This is a really sad state of the game. From the beginning (when I heard about the post-BW pre-rotation format) I didn't want to play nats. My strategy for regionals centralized on not playing nats. That... didn't work out. From all perspectives, I am dreading the thought of nats. It is scary competitively as I cannot be sure that I will be rewarded for skillful play/deckbuilding. It is also a very boring format. Sitting down knowing that there is a high chance that the game doesn't get past Turn 1 (either I lose or me opponent scoops). That isn't very much fun.

I was fortunate enough to have the foresight to book early, so I will be going... but not happily. I will play my best, but I will not be loving the tournament as I do for most other formats. I am officially ready for the rotation... or the surprise announcement saying we're going back to a CG-PK format... no complains from me ;D I have already started building for next format (assuming RR-on) and I am loving it so far. I'm gonna make the claim that after worlds, we will see this game's Renaissance after its Dark Ages.

Wait! We can do 5+3! 5 minute games, 3 turns! That way, Nationals will go by like 3 times faster and less money for hotels=more money for Pokemon!

cg-pk would only be like 3 sets, but the dx-dp format was AMAZING and if they went back to that there would be some legitimacy at nationals!!!*

*i would get to play banette

gonna go, sell my stuff, play day 1 if i have time, sincei know i wont top cut, i'll just go home

On the day before Regionals, I received an invitation to return to staff Nationals this year and I was elated.

As I read the invitation more fully, I realized for the first time with a shock that the singular most important day of work in my new job conflicted with Nationals attendance, and my elation turned to dejection.

After experiencing too long a bout of unemployment, then landing a job I love, I had to choose employment over Nationals this year.

I have been blessed to judge the Juniors at Nats each of the last two years and was lifted by their smiles and joy, and shared their pain as their tournament experiences ended with a final loss. I will miss the players, their parents, and all of the staff and volunteers who make the tournament an incredible experience for all.

I studied harder, judged more, hung out on the 'Gym longer, all in preparation for and appreciation of the opportunity that has come my way. The only thing that softens my sadness at not being able to attend this year is the knowledge that someone else will know the incredible happiness at being asked to staff Nats.

I know there are many who are not loving the rules changes combined with the available sets, and the resultant format. As a judge, I wasn't loving the new Supporter rule. That said, the game is still Pokemon, a game we all love enough to fill thread after thread with conversation on this and other forums, and we can adapt and endure a few months of discomfort and along the way gather with our friends in Indianapolis, and if we're lucky San Diego, and play some games.

If you are torn between going and not going, go. Have a great time, I envy you. Good luck.

Congrats on finding a job! I also got a job this year, and it starts that week right before Nats, so I know I would be crazy to miss critical first day training for a Pokemon tournament. Don't worry, you're not the only one who can't go because of work :thumb:

As for all the reasons to go vs. not go to Nats, I say that if you can comfortably afford it, go! Especially if you can go with family and friends and stay with them. If you really want to go on the cheap, share a hotel room between 4 (or more) people and split the costs. Me and a few friends did that for Regionals this year and we ended up having a great time and even though I didn't top cut (5-3 record :(), I have no regrets about the trip.

So go, have fun, meet new people, and enjoy the last few months of this format. While we complain about it all the time, it's the last we'll see of it, so enjoy something you won't be able to come August. Life's too short to gripe about cards and formats ;)

I'll be attending nationals, but, I'm most certainly not looking forward to the actual event. The hotel situation is also pretty damn dumb. Thankfully, we already have a hotel booked, and though we'll have to drive to the Convention Center every day, it's better than having to pay a limb each night ($360?!?). Only real reason I'm even going to Nationals at this point is to see people and play in the prof. cup. Plus, side tournaments, I suppose. Outside of those, the main event is going to be all sorts of awful with Sabledonk. At this point, I'm just going to cross my fingers for the main event, and hope I make it out alive.

I'd like to think that TPCi would try to help the format somehow, but, I'm not expecting anything to be done. May Arceus be with us all.

I already booked my room a long time ago, but I'm gonna go and hope my opponents have enough respect for the game not to run Sableye donk.

I doubt I'll be bummed if I go to Nats, I really enjoy seeing everyone and its a fun event. Unless you play against Sableye for the entirety of Swiss, you should be alright :d

Yeah this is a pretty depressing point in this game. Which is a real shame since its overlapping with the release of the new Pokemon generation since this really isn't what I'd want to be advertising to potential new players as enticing to get into the game for the long haul.

I love the location ( Indianapolis ) as it was absolutely fantastic last year. I'm sure it'll be a blast hanging out with everyone again, but the hotel issue, and the actual tournament format, leave a lot to be desired. I'll be going, and I'll have a blast anyways, but I definitely see a lot of things which would push away most people.

1. You could only ever use a rare candy on a basic. I just wanted to point that out.

2. I don't understand why everyone is flipping their lid about having to stay further away from the convention center. My friend and I booked a hotel 10 minutes up meridian with no issues, and it's really cheap. Unlike other major cities, Indianapolis really isn't hard to get around. As long as you book somewhere inside the 465 loop, you really shouldn't have an issue getting to the convention center. Last year we stayed in Carmel for nats, and the 20 minute drive was... well, an extra 20 minutes. It was not a hardship.
