Thoughts on the finals not being recorded?

That's true but I know for a fact those 'fur suit' as I call them are of the quality are at least 600 bucks. They had 4. Again, that's normally a one time fee. 2400 bucks on average. Thats not including banners, posters etc so that may be around 10 grand in just advertisments. Again, I'm not trying to turn this into a debate but media coverage is needed for tournaments this large. Just think about how bad the NBA would be if they took on the same rules as Pokemon.

Just pointing out that the costumes are not a one-time use thing. I dunno if they were at US Nats last year, but they were definitely at Worlds, and I'm pretty sure they will be again. They probably get a ton of use out of those things. In fact for all we know, they don't come out of the Nats budget at all (except for whatever they pay the people to wear them of course).

Not arguing that Pokemon would benefit from more coverage. I would love to see it myself. I just think that the cost of decorations etc isn't really relevant.

I suspect that we will never know the real reasons why it didn't happen (but I bet it's not decorations or staff laziness). If you think how much things have improved over the last year or so (mainly thanks to topcut), then it's clear that Pokemon is moving in the right direction, even if it isn't giving everybody what they want right this minute.

Well, Pooka, you and your team did a great job. I enjoyed watching the games you posted. We all did. But its very disheartening to know you play a game where the higher ups just don't really care.

At Baby Mario, they may not be with every new gen that comes out but I have seen them around before. After the first time you buy them, they are yours. The game improving is up to opinion. I'm not sure how I feel about it right now but they can make a budget for media coverage for 1 tournament.

Disappointing, but not surprising. It would've been near impossible to fit taping equipment near the Masters table without ruining the view of those watching, which is not something I think they wanted.

if thats true why were the finals at worlds allowed to be recorded?

That was completely different. topcut didn't record the finals at Worlds at all. Pokemon did the video set up and broadcast them on the big screens (like they usually do), then they gave topcut the footage later.

So, this seems like a pride thing then?

I am not sure if other european nationals did that, but

http://pokegym.net/forums/showthread.php?t=165175

Basically the german LD provided live standings, parings and a featured match stream (if the internet is bad you cant provide live standings etc.) For the featured matches there were 3 cameras ( 1 for the game, 2 for the player faces). Also if you didnt want to play , you could watch the streamed match on a big screen.

I know US nationals is 3-4 times bigger than german nationals. but i think TPCI could do the same (if internet is good). I also think that TPCI/pokemon.com needs an extra section for the US events (example: konami has an extra section for their events).

Why are you trying so hard to find something negative to say? I have no idea how you could even reach that conclusion.

Giving topcut the finals footage (and letting them record other matches) was a good thing for Pokemon to do. topcut doesn't have the equipment to do live giant screen broadcasts at Worlds.

'a pride thing'? 'the higher ups don't really care'? SERIOUSLY? =/

Well, just trying to understand. The game as of now has been less then, well you know in a bad state. Prize support has been getting worse over the years. I don't play the game for the prizes but to help the game grow. This game is not healthy like it once way.

As for the pride thing, why else would you be denied a request to record the finals? Perhaps they feel TTC is stepping on their ground and they feel threaten. I don't know. It may be a bold statement to make but am making it based on what I can see. Again, I was not there so I don't know but I do watch the videos available to us.

Baby Mario, I understand that but Nationals is a important tournaments to do as well. TTC does great video recording. I just don't know why they were allowed to record top 16, 8 and 4 but not finals.

I think it's great that just the societal apparatus exists for there to be recorded matches of any kind. Try finding any substantive Pokemon TCG related videos produced by fans prior to 2005. Try finding any photographs on the internet of any Pokemon event prior to 2002.

In terms of stuff being documented, recorded, and published, We got it real good! What a great day it is to be alive!

I don't know why either.

But I am not just going to assume it was for horrible motives like pride or jealousy. Seems wrong to condemn people when we don't have any knowledge.

True that but we don't know their motives ether. Ether way, I'm dropping it.

There actually wasn't internet in the convention centre. I approached TPCi about it for VGC streaming but no internet was available (and costs are ridiculous as TheTopCut also found out). I was able to get a Sprint internet wifi hotspot from a friend but then we ran into the issue of no outlets near any of the TVs and TPCi being unable to help due to the rules of the convention centre. I have to say that TPCi was extremely helpful and open with information over the weekend and I really appreciated that.

i don't recall seeing a TTC camera setup on the finals stage at worlds '11...
Nope. But they have the only video on the internet of the Finals. All 3 of them. And IMO that's sad.

'a pride thing'? 'the higher ups don't really care'? SERIOUSLY? =/

Then they need to show us that they care. I'm not talking about Dave and the OP guys, as well as Mike. Those guys are absolutely amazing in everything that they do. They've shown me more than I need to see about their passion for the game, for the franchise, and especially for the players they service. I'm certain that nobody will forget the "We Want Pairings" from 2008, and the subsequent Dave mob of Juniors. And everything that I've seen from the others I've interacted with at the OP division has been nothing short of that type of incredible.

I'm talking about the non-OP guys. Not allowing the USNats Finals to be recorded while allowing the T16-T4 games to be recorded is odd beyond odd. If they can do it for the lesser games, why not for the higher games? And then to not record it themselves and post it on the internet themselves... It simply makes no sense. Admittedly, I have had next to zero interaction with those guys yet. They might blow my mind with their abilities. But I haven't seen it from the front side of the fence. And that's the frustrating part...

I think Ryan hit the nail on the head here. I know that Dave and his staff do everything that they can. So far, there just has been no communication between the public and the higher-ups. When there is no communication, people jump to conclusions. Until there is some sort of communication, people will continue to jump to conclusions and get upset. Even if they told us bad news, it would be better than no news.

As far as the internet situation at the convention center goes, even the paid internet (you can use Boingo there) isn't really sufficient. Last year (which admittedly would have been worse since last year there were a lot more people), I had to walk to a local Panera and upload my tour video from there. For nationals, to do large-scale coverage it's probably best to implement a sneakernet that ferries flash media cards from the floor to people working in hotel rooms to get stuff online (I'm not sure what the ratio of floor support to runners to editors should be-it depends on how fast the content can be edited and uploaded). It's not live, but it would increase how much content gets put out during the event.

One thing to keep in mind: for all of TTC's recordings at Nats this year, it was a camera on a tripod(esque) standing besides the table (duh); ie: very visible, would be in every picture taken of the finals, etc. All of the CC simulcasts done at Worlds are done using cameras that are mounted on the trusses in the ceiling beforehand, and thus wouldn't be viewable in any pictures taken.

My knowledge of how the higherups in the food chain view things is just as good as the next person's (read: zero), but I think one can't entirely discount that it's partially because having a massive tripod sitting in all of your marketing pictures of the finals is ugly. :/

Wow this topic exploded since last night.

Alright where to begin. First, why is everyone's first assumption of this is "Pokemon is lazy/doesn't want the game to grow"? Guys as simple as it is to the viewers of the forums of what would've been a good solution. (Of which I'm still slightly skeptical) The higher ups don't know about TTC. Reason being that they probably deal with multiple facets of Pokemon and probably don't know what the heck is going on. If anything the refusal of the recording may have been a precaution since the higher ups don't know what they're about to get into. Of course that may not be it, but there is almost most certainly an issue that has yet to be cleared.

Next, guys recording in Pokemon is largely new and to expect something that's only started at the Regionals level recently, to expect it to be at a much higher level, that has a lot more corporate involvement is practically insanity. Remember Pokemon isn't just the TCG or even the VG, but they also have their other media (anime and manga) and other products to deal with. They're vastly disconnected from us for a several reasons, and because of this I'm sure the question came out of nowhere from their perspective. So just give it some time to process.

Lastly regarding the recordings last year. Now this is speculation on my part, but the recording was meant to enrich the experience of the attendants so that everyone attending could watch the match without crowding around a table and messing up the players concentration. The idea of streaming it likely didn't occur to them at the time.

So in short, it is completely reasonable for Pokemon to have disallowed it this time around. Give it sometime for the higher ups to process it, and if all goes well then hopefully we'll have some form of recording next year.

thats why magic the gathering is so huge because their company cares.... i mean they even have a hall of fame! player of the year award etc! you can totally notice the difference...
