Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Time limit for US Nationals Top Cut has been announced!

Mystery Thing

Administrator
This year, all divisions in the TCG will play best of three, 75 minutes plus 3 turns for the top cuts. In addition, by the end of the day Saturday, all divisions of both the TCG and VGC will have played down to their final two.

What does this mean for you? It means that you'll be able to watch EVERY SINGLE ONE of the TCG and VCG finals, independent of each other without having to divide your attention!

75 minutes is fantastic!

So that, if I get this right, it means Masters will be play 75 min (Top 256,) Top 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, and Top 4 on Saturday?

I imagine Swiss might not end at 3 on Friday like normal...

9 rounds of Swiss between 10am and 6pm. Can it happen? That's 8 hours. Plus a Lunch Break. Masters Swiss won't be done before 8pm on Friday, unless something really, really weird happens.

I've also noticed that they haven't updated the FAQ yet. What's the scheduling going to look like for the weekend?

What great news. Thanks to everyone who lobbied for this much-needed change and thank you TPCi for listening to your players. I'm sure the 75-minute limits will produce some great matches.

Had nothing to do with lobbying, Jason. There are other considerations.

Time limit won't change the fact that great matches will be played. We have great players who are able to take on whatever challenges come their way.

wait, so does this mean that if you're playing in the main event, you can't play in the professor cup?

Also means that a lot of the staff who's working the event, who worked events all year, probably won't be able to either. I'd suggest that some sincere "thank you's" for the staff will be in order this year. Without them, this event isn't half of what it is today.

I really appreciate the decision to go with 75 minutes, but I even more appreciate the time limitations being announced a reasonable time before the event! Thank you, P!P.

I do find the decision to play all the way to top 2 on Saturday kind of odd. It seems to kinda ruin the purpose of a 3 day event. Although, if the change was to accomodate the last chance for points event, I can understand that.

Obviously I don't know the reasoning, but my guess is one part LCCP touney, one part have enough time to showcase each final for both games by themselves, rather than running them all simultaneously again.

Does this only imply for the US nats only as the title I guess states, or will there be a possibility this will apply for other nats as well? Quite curious.

Time limits are up to the tournament organizer running the event. It just so happens that for the US, that's TPCI. For any other country, it would be up to whoever in that country is running that event.

Wait so does this mean VGC will have swiss + topcut all on Saturday? I was under the impression that top 16 would be on Sunday (though still hoping there is any chance that we might get a top 32) Still pretty cool there is already a timetable for this in advance!

Thanks for clarifying, Mr. Schwimmer. How foolish and arrogant of me to assume the voices of our enormous and loyal player base have any effect on the decisions TPCi makes. I am pleased that one of your rare posts to the community was made only to clarify that our repeatedly voiced concerns had nothing to do with the decision made for time limit at Nats.

Jason,
Re-read the thread campaigning for 75 minute time limits. Tell me how you think that a thread full of insults and vitriol aimed at my team, would get you what you wanted. My child most certainly doesn't get ice cream when she kicks and screams and throws a tantrum for it.

There were plenty of folks in that thread who were more than respectful, including Pooka, and many others. Many people seem to understand that it isn't always about what "you" want, but what the company wants.

While you may not believe it, there are many, many things that we'd like to see that align with what the player community would like to see. But again, there are other considerations that we have to take into account, that you do not, that make these things either difficult, or impossible to achieve, particularly within the RIGHT NOW timeline that most would prefer.

Thanks,
Prof Dav

FAQs are being updated to align with the new Sunday schedule, but yes, our goal is to complete as many, if not all top cut rounds on Saturday, except for finals, which will be played on Sunday.

Given our current timeline, it looks like only the Juniors/Seniors may have to play a round or two on Sunday morning, depending on total attendance.

Thanks,

I think this is a great move, and the last chance tournament as well. It is great to see nationals being improved in both traditional (playing with time limits) and new (nats lcq) ways.

Mr. Schwimmer,
As in any position of authority, you and your team will be the targets of criticism (and rightfully so considering the amount of TPCi bungles we've seen over the years). In a worldwide community with a large and young player base, it should be no surprise to you that some of the criticism isn't always as eloquent or polite as it could be. Rather than patronize your player base by comparing some of us to misbehaving children, we expect you to be a professional and make decisions based on the best interest of your player base and the game itself -- not the tone in which some people asked for it.

Are you saying that this announcement would have been made regardless of whether that thread was made, or the other numerous threads/posts were made, or whether players, TOs and PTOs said anything about extending the time limit throughout the year?
