Timed Worlds Finals?

After seeing the Masters game decided on Sudden Death, it got me thinking: Why don't we have untimed finals matches?

Think about it: These are arguably the most celebrated and most watched games of the season, and yet they can still be decided on extraneous factors like time. I understand that having timed matches is a necessary evil in tournament play to keep the tournament running on schedule, but for the finals of the World Championships surely this should not be an issue - there are no more games after these!

Thoughts?

The only argument for timed matches that I can think of is that the time limit is part of the game. And tbh, that's not a bad argument. While the time limit is sometimes annoying, and doesn't have a direct reason in the finals, it's still one aspect of the game.

I'm against the limit regardless, for the obvious reasons. It kinda sucks to see the game of the year go into sudden death because the finals players weren't fast enough. They should be able to consider their choices without having to look at the clock, to make sure they play the best they can. It wouldn't really change anything else, except maybe the number of spectators in the middle of the match. You're going to have to be ambitious to the verge of stupidity to make your deck choice based on the amount of time in the finals (not that anyone would).

There's always the slight chance that the finals turn into chess-like matches with turns taking over fifteen minutes. :p

Maybe a turn by turn time limit. 5 mins a turn or something. or set it up like chess. both players get an hour per game, up to them how to use it? Sucks to loose in sudden death:frown:

an untimed final wouldn't work due to scheduling requirements. the hall must be cleared by X pm so teardown can begin, or else TPCi is looking at paying for another day's rental of the venue. and that would absolutely NOT work if there is another event scheduled for that space directly after worlds...

the video game final has to fit in as well, and THAT is timed.

Well...

How about not having a timed match but still penalizing for slow play?

Best solution for top 2 imo.
I was thinking about this too, and why not?

Another idea would be to have an extended time limit, something like 3 hours (or 2 if time is an issue) would be enough for the players, and still not drag on to the night.

The first thing that working at Worlds taught me years ago is "time management".
There is a tight schedule, and while parts of the event may go long or start late, at the end of the event, that presentation awards ceremony had better start on time or else whoever is responsible will NOT be working any future large events!

The reality of Pokemon is that it is a deeply strategic game and games can frequently take 40+ minutes to finish. That being said, I believe Best 2/3 matches should have 90 minute time limits. Anything less defeats the purpose of Best 2/3. Yes, 90 minutes is long. Yes, it will make tournament days longer. But to give less time insults the game.

I think tournaments like Nationals & Worlds should be more skill based. Why not have a two-hour Best of 5 series in Top Cuts? Why have so much luck determine the best players? Believe me, I understand it would add hours (or even one day) to a tournament. I understand it would cost more money. But we're talking about the National & World Championships!

Does anyone think its cool the winner of Worlds was basically decided by a coin flip? I sure as heck don't. It makes the game look bad! Let skill determine World Champions!

The ideal: "time limits take away in-game skill; short time limits insult the game."

The reality: "events need to finish in a timely order; awards ceremonies need to start on time."

The compromise: make the World Championship finals an extended 90 minutes, and plan for this in your event schedule.

Yeah, that's another idea I had. Okay, maybe untimed games aren't feasible, but surely a longer amount of time allocated would suffice.

Well last year, Yuta won on a top decked Uxie X. had it been any other card he would've lost to Pram.
