Top 8 Houston Regionals

In the days leading up to Regionals I wasn't so sure about what I was going to play. Magnezone/Regirock was the deck I played for States, and I did OK with that. However, I knew it could beat LuxChomp and VileGar, but I didn't like its consistency against those decks. So I started testing other decks.

A week before Regionals, there was a doubles tournament at Rocket's Hideout, the best card store in Louisiana. I was going to show up and just have fun with whoever was available as a partner, but Mikey decided to be a little girl and didn't go. So Brent called me and so we partnered up. He wanted us both to play Blaziken/Garchomp/Sableye, and our strategy would be to take prizes quickly even if we were up against stronger Pokemon (Gyarados, Machamp, etc.) So he gave me his states-winning list, and I built that deck. We got there, but they split us up because we were too pro to be on the same team. I partnered up with an inexperienced player using Vilegar, and Brent took an inexperienced player using Charizard. We helped out our partners and eventually faced each other in the finals. And my partner and I ended up winning. (My first yes/no question was "Can you Trainerlock Brent the entire game?") So although Brent and I didn't play as we wanted to, I got a solid feel of the deck and liked it.

With the days counting down to Regionals, my Nexus S arrived. So I spent most of my time playing with that (it is a really awesome phone) instead of playing Pokemon cards. So Wednesday night I realize this and decide just to go with Blaziken/Garchomp/Sableye. It can beat Vilegar, LuxChomp, DialgaChomp, and, through a bit of luck, skill, and advice from Brent, Gyarados.

The drive there wasn't too bad. I was excited, as this was only my second tournament in Masters. I think we started with 181 Masters and had 8 Rounds and a Top 32.

Round 1 vs. Len D., LuxChomp

It's only the first round and I'm up against a deck that I never like playing. Oh well. I don't remember the very early parts of this game; I think we traded prizes for a little bit with Dragon Rushes and I got a Promocroak KO on his Luxray. I eventually play an early Judge. He doesn't draw exceptionally well off it, so I have an opportunity to take a small lead. He has to start to fight with Uxie Lv. X, using Zen Blade to attack and Trade Off to set up. When he KO's a Blaziken FB Lv. X with a Flash Bite and Zen Blade, I promote a Garchomp C Lv. X with a DCE attached. I play a Cynthia's Feelings for 8, and draw 2 DCE off of it. That was all I needed to finish off the game. 1-0

Len recovers from his first round loss and ends up making the top 8. Congrats!

Round 2 vs. Kevin M., LuxChomp

He doesn't start off very well, and I take advantage of that by using a Power Spray early on in the game. He also benched a Luxray and a Garchomp and played an SP Radar in the same turn for the Luxray GL Lv. X. I decide to take a risky move and Dragon Rush the Luxray instead of the Garchomp, as I believed it would help me more at that point in the match. I Luring Flame his Bronzong G to stall for time as I start to draw dead. He manages to get out another Luxray GL Lv. X and Bright Looks my Bronzong G. I am stopped for a little bit while I cannot draw a Poketurn. I wish I had had the Spray to prevent that Bright Look. Oh well. I still set up more stuff while he continues to draw dead. Time is called while it is 4-4 prizes on his turn. He doesn't take a KO. I take a KO with Garchomp C Lv. X. He can see that I can Dragon Rush for game next turn, so unless he kills the Garchomp C Lv. X, I win. What he doesn't know is that I have game no matter what, due to a Garchomp C Lv. X, DCE, and Energy Gain in my hand with a regular Garchomp C benched. He proceeds to take a 15 minute turn while he tries to think of how to KO my Garchomp C. I wonder if I should have said something about his long turn, which was definitely longer than it should have been, but I knew I had won so I didn't say anything. He eventually decides he can't make the KO, and passes. I win. 2-0

Round 3 vs. Alec N., LuxChomp

A 3rd one? Seriously? This one was rather tough. I don't draw all that well, and he manages to take counter-KOs with Ambipom and Toxicroak while I have to waste rather large resources like Blaziken FB Lv. X and Garchomp C Lv. X. It seemed that after every Judge, he managed to draw decent enough off of it to keep him in the game. I do my best to put up a fight, but when it looks like I am about to go ahead with the win, he pulls out Dragonite FB (while he had Ambipom G in the discard pile) to make a KO on my Garchomp C Lv. X. It's now 1-1 prizes. I can try to Flash Bite and use Honchkrow G to take out a benched Crobat with 30 on it from a Flash Impact, but I don't have the necessary cards. (It turned out he had a Spray, so it wouldn't have mattered.) Instead, I use Vapor Kick with Blaziken FB Lv. X. As far as I knew, he had no option except to send up another Pokemon to take another hit while he would try to draw something to take his last prize, but he topdecks a Premier Ball and gets a Garchomp C Lv. X to Dragon Rush me for the win. That was a very close and excellent game! 2-1

Round 4 vs. Cameron M., Steelix

I was still a little bitter after last round's loss, so I was hoping to play against a relatively easy match. And well, I get Steelix, which is rather in my favor because of Blaziken. Turn 1, I draw and pass. Turn 2, I Earthquake a Beldum. Turn 3, I Jet Shoot a lone Steelix for the win. Sorry about that. 3-1

Round 5 vs. Jose E., Magnezone/Regirock

He starts with Spiritomb and starts to Darkness Grace to set up. I think I kill Spiritomb with Sableye. He sends up something that wasn't Spiritomb while he has a Super Connectivity Magnezone and a Magnezone Prime. With 0 cards in his hand, he tries to Magnetic Draw. I Spray it. Next turn, I Luring Flame the Magnezone Prime. He can't attack because he has no energy, and he can't draw because he's burned. I Jet Shoot for the KO because of Blaziken's Body. Next, I Luring Flame up the other Magnezone. It gets the burn/Jet Shoot KO. He draws nothing for the rest of the game, and I'm able to keep taking prizes with Blaziken and Garchomp while holding 2 Sprays in my hand. 4-1

Round 6 vs. Nikkei F., Machamp/Donphan

After our game, Jose told me that my smile would be wiped off my face once I faced a Machamp deck. And now I face a Machamp deck. Ironic, eh? Well, I go first with a Garchomp C and DCE. He flips over Machop, and I immediately become scared. I drop Promocroak and another SP Pokemon so I have 3 in play and Set Up...to draw into 2 Power Spray! Some of the luck that Seniors have is still with me. Haha. He Bebe's into a Uxie, and I of course Spray it. He passes with the Machop active. Hardly able to believe my luck, I make the KO on the Machop. I KO something else. He gets out a Donphan and KOs something. I respond with Promocroak. The Donphan is Belted, and has 2 Energy. And he doesn't get the third energy! So he puts 80 on my Promocroak. I double Flash Bite the Donphan and Dragon rush it for two prizes. He doesn't have anything else out, so I double Flash Bite his Azelf with 50 on it for a KO and then Jet Shoot for my last prize. Good game, and sorry about being lucky. 5-1

Round 7 vs. Michael S., Jumpluff

Michael was a really nice guy. He was really talkative and nice to be around. I wish our game lasted longer. He bounces me for 10 with Hoppip. I kill his sent-up Sunkern with Sableye. He drops an Uxie and I Spray it. He leaves the Uxie active, and I KO it. He evolves Hoppip into Skiploom and attacks, and I Jet Shoot it for game. 6-1

Round 8 vs. Alex F., VileGar

Alex ended up winning the whole thing. Congrats! Anyways, he starts with Spiritomb, which immediately slows me down. I mismanage my Unown Q, equipping it to Sableye and then attaching a Darkness Energy and going for an Overconfident KO. There is one point later in the game where I need a free retreater but am unable to get one because of this. Alex gets set up rather fast, and the one time I Luring Flame Vileplume, he has a Warp Energy, even after a Judge. I can never kill the Vileplume, and am stuck with several TGIs in my hand turn after turn as he Poltergeists for 90+. I eventually manage to take a KO on a Gengar with Honchkrow, and he flips heads on Fainting Spell. He had a Rescue Energy on it so it wouldn't have mattered. Oh well, good game! 6-2

So I end up being the 10th place seed. Adam Garcia gets...3rd seed, which we all have a laugh at. He unfortunately lost the top 32 but was glad not to get 3rd. Haha.

Top 32 vs. Jose G, Tangrowth (His Report is Here)
Before you say "Tangrowth?!?! Seriously???" I want to say that his deck was really cool. He would get a Tangrowth out with Shaymin Lv. X and Swallow Up for KO after KO while healing himself. It doesn't look intimidating at first, but play a LuxChomp against it and you'll probably change your mind. It was unfortunate that Jose had to face one of the two(?) Blazikens in top cut.

Game 1
He starts Sableye, and I can get the donk if I get a Crobat. I Set Up for 5 and get a Poketurn that I needed to win. WIN

Game 2
I start taking prizes rather quickly while he uses Impersonate for Twins several times. I Dragon Rush a Tangela and that slows his process. He gets the Tangrowth Beast out before I can take it out while it's on the Bench, and he takes a prize with it. I think I take out something on his bench. He Seekers up his Azelf so it's just Shaymin Lv. X on the bench, and uses Swallow Up. I Double Flash Bite and Dragon Rush the Shaymin Lv. X for my sixth prize. Awesome deck, and sorry about your pairing. WIN, 7-2

Top 16 vs. Randall H., Gliscor/Gengar Prime

Randall, although I don't know him as well as Brent or Mikey or some of my other area friends, is still a friend of mine and I was a little sad to be playing him in top cut. He had a very interesting deck, using Gliscor Lv. X to Night Slash and send up Gengar Prime. Gengar Prime's Body would send any KO'd Pokemon to the Lost Zone, and he could drop Lost World for a win.

Game 1
I am not entirely sure what to do against his deck. I am surprised when the Judge rules the ruling with Gliscor and Gengar, and I shrug it off and keep playing while being cautious. He never gets an Expert Belt on Gliscor Lv. X, so I am able to keep him from taking prizes. Despite his stalling with Spiritomb and other high-HP Pokemon to Seeker them up, I am able to keep ahead in the prize trade with Jet Shoots and Dragon Rushes to other Pokemon. WIN

Game 2
He does draw into an Expert Belt this game, and threatens a win with Lost World if he KOs too many of my Pokemon. I KO both Gengar Primes he gets up, and Dragon Rush other stuff. It looks like it's about to go to Game 3 because I have been drawing dead with one prize left while he Night Slashes for multiple KOs, but I manage to get everything I need for a game-winning Jet Shoot. Great games, and I love the deck! WIN, 8-2

So I made it past Day 1, finishing up at 12:30 in the morning. I wake up the next day and go to the card store where the top 8 are playing. Brent lost to the Gyarados deck last night, so I have to play the Gyarados. I was hoping I wouldn't run into any Gyarados all tournament, but my luck finally ran out.

Top 8 with Josh H., Gyarados (His Report is Here)
Game 1
I fail to get the optimal start against Gyarados (Impersonate Judge) so I try to make the best of it by Dragon Rushing stuff. I still manage to take a lead, which is always good. There was one point where I used Toxicroak's Poison from Poison Revenge to take out a Gyarados without activating Rescue Energy. He never draws a BTS all game, and when I Spray a Uxie for 6 or 7 late game, when I have one prize left, I win. I get a boost of confidence. WIN

Game 2
Game 1 was great; this was terrible. I still don't get the early Judge, and he manages to get set up fast. When I Luring Flame his Regice, he has Switch. When I Dragon Rush Gyarados to set it up for a KO, he Warp Energy-ies and Seekers. When I Earthquake to do 50 to Gyarados, he uses Lost Remover to trash my DCE. That caught me by surprise. An early BTS helps him, and that, combined with a Cynthia's for 8 and no Energy, won him the game without much of an offense from my deck. LOSS

Game 3
...Still no Impersonate Judge. A Luring Flame on Regice catches him by surprise, but he manages to get caught up fast. This was actually more even, and we trade prizes. He Belts a Gyarados, I put it in KO range, and he Seekers it so my Pokemon live longer. I bring it down to 2-2 and see a way to win if I can Target Attack Combee and Dragon Rush something else, but even after a Judge a few turns before he has everything he needs to get back a Gyarados and make it 1-2 in his favor. I have no way to kill the Gyarados, and he will take his prize next turn. Oh well. LOSS, 8-3

Making Top 8 was pretty cool, even if I lost. Except for Kaitlyn, who made it to Top 8 as well, I did better than all my friends! No offense, Brent, Matt, and Mikey.

Payton ends up winning Seniors. Huge congrats on that!

I sure hope I can make it to Nats. My move to China might prevent me from going. But regardless if I go to Nats or not, Houston Regionals was a blast!

No offense taken bro,Matt and I had to face off in T32 so naturally one of us couldn't get to T16. I never saw Lost Remover against the Gyarados guy,but he ran and played well so props to him. Hope to see ya' at Nats! :)

One of the most skilled players to read from :D Im going to nationals, so I hope to you there bro. It would be a blast.

GREAT JOB

-Simon

Hey congrats man! You really knew how to run your deck. Oh and by the way my name is spelled Nikkei .lol Even though ive been playing this game for a while I learned a lot just from playing you. Thanks. :)

Great Article!!!

I really hope you get to go to Nats! If my mom comes and we promise not to let Brent corrupt you too much, maybe you can go with us!!!!

:)

Brent- Thanks! I hope I can make it to Nats too. And it was really bad that eventually you, Matt, or I would have to kill each other off if one of us would have won. Meanwhile, KAITLYN was happily by herself on the other side of the bracket. Haha.

dialga master- Thank you! I appreciate that.

Simon- congrats on your Regionals as well! I hope I can see you at Nats.

Nikkei- I fixed the spelling of your name. Thanks, and I'm glad you learned a lot. I'm still really sorry about my ridiculous luck getting 2 Sprays in my hand on my first turn.

Payton- Thanks! It was nice hanging out with you, and great job winning Seniors!

Ms. April- but Brent's my life mentorrrrr...and I sure hope so! :)

Josh- Great job to you too. I wish I had had a more favorable matchup, but whatever. You beat me fair and square. Hope to see you too.

chrataxe- Thanks! And why do you wish you played against LuxChomp the first three rounds? Were you running SpeedChamp or something? Haha.

Hey, I'm Len.

It was a good game, was cool to see we both made top 8, that's probably exceptionally rare that two first round opponents make top 8. (And I probably couldn't have done it without you helping my resistance)

Also don't forget you sprayed 2 uxies in our game :p

Hey, Len! It definitely was a good game, and I forgot I sprayed your 2 Uxies. I played 3 LuxChomps back to back to back, so I guess I did forget some of the details of each of the three games.

Alex2k- Yeah, but for busy reasons this was only my second tournament. Thanks for the congrats!
