I'm trying to get a new player into Pokemon, and they are going to start playing Pokemon by being thrown into a random Battle Roads. So far, Torterra seems to be solid enough for them to start off with, but not uber complicated and strategic and intimidating.

So, here's a deck that I quickly threw together for them. Any critique would be great.

  • x1 Torterra Level X
  • x3 Torterra (MD)
  • x3 Grotle (MD)
  • x4 Turtwig (MD)
  • x2 Sceptile (GE)
  • x1 Grovyle (GE)
  • x2 Treecko (GE)
  • x2 Claydol (GE)
  • x2 Baltoy (GE)

  • x4 Dusk Ball
  • x4 Rare Candy
  • x4 Bebe's Search
  • x2 Dawn Stadium
  • x2 Roseanne's Research
  • x2 Cynthia's Feelings
  • x2 Buck's Training
  • x2 Super Scoop Up
  • x2 Warp Point
  • x1 Premier Ball

  • x14 Grass Energy
  • x2 Call Energy

Edited.

My main concern is whether or not I should use the DP set Torterra line rather than the MD Torterra line. I know the trainers are iffy and upon testing the deck out it seems to work fine, but I just wanted to get a second opinion from other seasoned players. I am also debating on whether or not I should take out the Buck's and accommodate Switch in there. The reason I have a lot of basic energies is that Sceptile may not last forever on a Bench, and it's better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks in advance, guys/gals.

I played Torterra at grinders (and got owned..)

Anyway, I recommend splitting your Torterra between MD and DP (either 2/1 or 1/2, preference really) as well as your Grotle (1 MD, 1 DP), you don't really need 3 Grotle.

-4 Dusk Ball
+2 Roseanne's Research
+1 Dawn Stadium (not just for healing, but stadium countering)
+1 Switch (heavy retreat)
-1 Premier Ball (not necessary when running Bebe's, extra card space)
-2 Bucks Training (weak draw power, you already hit for a lot)
-2 Cynthia's Feelings (you won't be KO'd often with Torterra, 4 is nice, but Call Energy is nicer imo)
+2 Night Maintenance (if TorterraX/Sceppy get KO'd you'll want them back, quick)
+2 Call Energy
+1 Chatot (free promote, extra draw to compensate for losing Cynthia's)

new list:

1 Torterra lv X
2 Torterra MD
1 Torterra DP
1 Grotle MD
1 Grotle DP
4 Turtwig (not sure on set, the one with free 10 and one grass 20)
2 Sceptile GE
1 Grovyle GE
2 Treeko GE
2 Claydol GE
2 Baltoy GE
1 Chatot MD

4 Rare Candy
4 Roseanne's Research
4 Bebe's Search
3 Dawn Stadium
2 Super Scoop Up
2 Warp Point
2 Night Maintenance
1 Switch

14 Grass Energy
4 Call Energy

Hope that helps, and best of luck at Battle Roads!
