Totally Rethinking Game Boy Tournaments

Game Boy tournaments can be lots of fun,
but there are a few basic problems that can
be dealt with to improve how they are run.

First, don't require 3 Level 50 (or Level 100) Pokemon.
That is a large investment of time and effort.
Lower it more to the range of Level 15 thru 25.

Second, do not ever run a tournament based on Levels.
This promotes sharking and using only a select few Pokemon.
Instead total up all six abilities:
HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed.
Pick a number that this total should not exceed,
such as 125, 175, 250, ect.
Add a clause that says their lowest Ability must not be significantly
less than half of what their highest Ability is (excluding HP).

Third, give everyone a month or two notice on exactly what the
rules are.

Fourth, At the tournament, make sure that a Pokemon doesn't have
moves it can't possibly learn, and count up everyone's abilities to
make sure that they are not too high. Everybody should turn in
a list of what their Pokemon's statistics, and attacks are, and
what each Pokemon is holding and which Pokemon is
in the lead position.

Fifth, Outlaw Items except one held Item for each Pokemon.

Sixth, Outlaw all moves such as Rest, Recover, and other moves
whose only purpose is to heal large amounts of damage.

Seventh, don't set a time limit on each game.
If either player can prove to a judge that the game
cannot be completed, then the game is declared a tie.
Don't count Pokemon left or force a player to retreat their
active Pokemon.
This is a major judgment call on the judges part.

Eighth, make it fun, do things like
bring in a TV and a Game Cube for "Feature Matches"

Anyway, these are my thoughts on the matter.
Improvements are quite welcome.

okay I agree and disagree some some of the points
1. if you put the level cap at 15 or 25, there is no way players can use their favorite evolution pokemon or certain pokemon that can only be caught at higher levels that don't breed. Tournaments should be for people who are willing to put the time and effort to make the best team possible, and I feel this lowers the pool too much. Besides, people who are willing to put even more effort probably will egg breed most of the more advanced attacks.

2. Adding up the stats is too time consuming and people will find ways to use other ways to gain advantages other than their statisitics.

3. Yeah, definently, this gives people time to train new pokemon for the tournament.

4. DUH

5. Aren't they already outlawed other than held items? I do like the idea of only having one of each item held, it keeps everyone from playing leftovers or miracleberry/rest on all of their pokemon.

6. The time limit should make up for this, people who recover are wasting their time other than attacking. The recover until 8 mins seems to work. Recovery isn't that strong when most of the pokemon take an extreme amount of damage or are OHKO'ed anyway. A super effective usually takes more than half the HP from a pokemon.

7. Yeah, I would like to see interesting matches play out.

8. That's the point of tournaments anyway.
