Game Boy tournaments can be lots of fun,
but there are a few basic problems that can
be dealt with to improve how they are run.
First, don't require 3 Level 50 (or Level 100) Pokemon.
That is a large investment of time and effort.
Lower it more to the range of Level 15 thru 25.
Second, do not ever run a tournament based on Levels.
This promotes sharking and using only a select few Pokemon.
Instead total up all six abilities:
HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed.
Pick a number that this total should not exceed,
such as 125, 175, 250, ect.
Add a clause that says their lowest Ability must not be significantly
less than half of what their highest Ability is (excluding HP).
Third, give everyone a month or two notice on exactly what the
rules are.
Fourth, At the tournament, make sure that a Pokemon doesn't have
moves it can't possibly learn, and count up everyone's abilities to
make sure that they are not too high. Everybody should turn in
a list of what their Pokemon's statistics, and attacks are, and
what each Pokemon is holding and which Pokemon is
in the lead position.
Fifth, Outlaw Items except one held Item for each Pokemon.
Sixth, Outlaw all moves such as Rest, Recover, and other moves
whose only purpose is to heal large amounts of damage.
Seventh, don't set a time limit on each game.
If either player can prove to a judge that the game
cannot be completed, then the game is declared a tie.
Don't count Pokemon left or force a player to retreat their
active Pokemon.
This is a major judgment call on the judges part.
Eighth, make it fun, do things like
bring in a TV and a Game Cube for "Feature Matches"
Anyway, these are my thoughts on the matter.
Improvements are quite welcome.
