Has anyone traded Pokemon between Leaf Green/Fire Red (Japanese Version) and Sapphire/Ruby (US Version)? Is it even possible?

NO. I tried trading with my Japaneese friend, Kento, and no go.
(traded English Ruby with Japaneese Sapphire so i assume it wont work with Leaf + Fire.:( )

Um, had the Japanese friend beaten the Elite Four? If not, there's your problem. Trading between the two will only work if the FR/LG player has beaten the Elite Four.

A certain series of events has to take place before you can trade between the 2 games:

  • You must collect 60 Pokemon in your PokeDex
  • You must travel with Bill to the Rainbow Islands and collect the Ruby Plate after you beat Blaine in Cinnabar Gym
  • You must beat the Elite 4
  • After you complete all that, Prof. Oak will take you to his lab and give both you and your rival the National Dex
  • You must collect the Sapphire plate and drive Team Rocket off of the islands
  • Give the Ruby and Sapphire plates to the guy in front of the giant computer in the Pokemon Center on the first island

So, if you want to trade your Pokemon, you gotta do some work before you're able to. It's not very difficult, especially if you've played the original Red and Blue games. After you complete the steps, you'll be able to to trade between FR/LG and Ru/Sa. Once you trade, your Ru/Sa game will automatically update with the National Dex, but the Pokemon has to come from FR/LG in order to get the updated Dex.

Trust me, I know it works. ;) It just takes a bit of time.

But the question was..is it possible to trade Pokémon a Japanese Leaf Green, to a US Sapphire? As far as I recall, none of the original games were ever compatible with each other if they were in different languages. So far, English Ru/Sa games can't trade with Japanese Ru/Sa games. So that leaves the more recent two, which I believe isn't possible, nor do I think will they work for an English or Japanese copy of Colosseum when using a different language copy.

Actually, it *IS* possible to swap Pokemon between the different language carts(Japanese and US, anyway).

I traded with a friend last year who only had a Japanese Sapphire version with him at the time, so I ended up with a Japanese Lombre on my Ruby cart, which gave me the idea to import Leaf Green and give it a shot.

It's fully possible to trade Pokemon between the 4 games in either language. The only difference is having to practically beat the entire FR/LG game in order to trade with the Ru/Sa games.

It's pretty sweet that the ability to trade Pokemon between the versions was programmed into the games. Now the language barrier has grown smaller, all thanks to POKEMON!!!

Since Poinko is gone for the weekend, I will take this one... The National Dex is there, but it apparently only appears if you actually trade from FR/LG, not with something from RuSa, even if it is an unatainable. I dont know why, but that is the case. After he imported LG, I decided to get FR to get an even more complete Dex.

And yes you can trade with the Japanese and american RuSa carts, and also with the FR/LG carts. They are inter-compatable, trust me. It alters their names somewhat between the 2, but Natures, stats, Moves, ect stay the same... just get translated...

 Huh? Duh What.... did you say? You uhh.. CAN trade english with Japaneese? b-b-but.. I-It d-didnt work with me!
oh well...

Yippee!!!

cool...

Makes sense... When I dropped my japanese Ruby save game onto my English cartridge (on accident, wasn't paying attention) I was able to continue on just fine(it was nifty, my name was screwed up on the menu screen, but in the OT of the pokemon (who all had names written in japanese), the OT name was written in japanese). So those ones are compatible. And since Fire Red/Leaf Green are able to trade with the japanese one they would be able to trade with the English one as well because of that.

*The Anaconda now wonders how far Joe Monkey is with the Fire Red cartridge he borrowed from me*

There is cross-trading because all GBA's are essentially the same thing. The only reasonthey didn't do cross-language trading before is because a GBC from japan and a GBC from USA had slightly different workings. But... when you cross-langual trade, you're stuck with the japanesse default name.

Your not stuck with the default name, it is just like any trade, you are stuck with whatever the trainer named it... I named most of the Pokes I caught in English, albiet only 5 letters, but hey... The Japanese one cuts name to first 5 letters, the American one stretches the Japanese name, even the ones in english... It looks like it is bolded and spaced further apart...

I finally did it! :D :D :D
Works just as Spectreon described in the last post.
Now I am working on raising Tyranitar and Dragonite in my Sapphire game. Should be fun entering them in the lvl 100 battle tower challenge.

dang it! it looks like Kento wont get FR/LG in awhile....
so sad...
and how the heck did U get Tyranitar in FR/LG???

at the 7th Island, you can catch Larvitar.. you need to go south from PC, and then head east, there are Cubones, Marowak, Skarmory (FR only), Meowth, Persian, Phanpy and Larvitar.... I just caught one like 30 minutes ago... then you level up and its a T-tar.... there ya go....

Yes you can battle between versions, it's what confirmed for me that trading between the two versions was doable.
