Amoonguss

:vg_grass:/:vg_poison:

So, back in the days of Red and Blue, there was a Pokemon that impersonated the looks of a Pokeball. You would go into the building, look around, see a few Pokaballs on the ground- thinking it would be cool to find a rare item and --
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT! ELECTRODE!

Well, the 5th generation of Pokemon continues that little tradition, but this time it is in the forest. There you are, looking to capture some cool wild Pokemon, and, over off to the left is a Pokeball. Sitting there. Looking all innocent. Your thinking: RARE ITEM! So you walk on over, and--
AMOONGUSS!
(Sorry, I am not sure what a mushroom would sound like when it attacks!)

Now that is something that seems like it would be some sort of dream Mario is having, yet turns into a nightmare. There Mario goes, gathering mushrooms for a pizza to make for the Princess- and your topping attacks you.

So, is this Pokemon a nightmare that is worthy of causing mayhem on the field?

I would say so. This Pokemon is one of my personal favorites from the introduction of 5th generation Pokemon. I still use this guy at least 4 out of 10 battles, just to watch it work it's serious support in double battles.

For base stats, this is what we're looking at:

Hit Point: 114 max hit point total possible: 432
Attack: 85 max stat total possible: 295
Defense: 70 max stat possible: 262
Special attack: 85 max stat possible: 295
Special defense: 80 max stat possible: 284
Speed: 30 max stat possible: 174

This Pokemon has 2 abilities:

Effect Spore
Regenorator

Effect Spore is an awesome ability, as it is a side effect if Amoonguss is physically touched by an attacking Pokemon. A Pokemon that touches Amoongus is exposed to a 10% chance of a fun, wonderful status infliction. Sleep. Paralysis or Poison. (Maybe Mario should rethink making a pizza topping out of this guy after all.) This ability is a hindering ability, making your opponent take a slight risk in using a physical attacker to attack Amoonguss with since it might become under the influence of one of the three status inflictions. Hay, every little bit helps, and with this ability- it ups the play factor a bit, since it is a free 10% chance to cause a little grief to your opponent.

Regenorator, is, um, well- - um, it just does not seem to do justice for this Pokemon for double battles. But that is just me, my opinion, and I just do not see me switching out my Monster Mushroom to gain some health back by switching out. You see, Regenerator will heal your Amoonguss with up to 33.3% of your Hit Point total, just for switching out of battle. Seems cool and all, but I fail to see why it is better of a choice when Amoonguss can learn some Hit Point healing moves or have a hold item that will do the job, without having to switch out of battle. It can be of use over Effect Spore for single battles, as it can be a good way to replenish some health on a switch out if you are stuck behind a rock in a tough place and the Amoonguss can't put up much of a fight or handle the heat. If that is the case, you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Chef Alakaramsy will have a field day with Amoongus. Switch out, heal, and try again with a band aid on.

So, what can this Pokemon do besides look like a Pokeball? It all depends on how you want to build one for battles. Or making a pizza, but that is for you to decide. Here we go, into build a mushroom that strikes fear into plumbers-er Pokemon that are not equipted to handle some garden salad shenanigans.

Amoonguss

Ability: Effect Spore

Hold item: Black Sludge Black Sludge will restore some Hit Points after each turn is complete.

Nature: Calm Special Defense up, Attack down

Effort Value placement: 252 Hit Point, 252 Special Defense, 4 in Special Attack

Investing your effort points into the Hit Point stat will boost your Amoonguss's health to a level it can take a good beating and still be around for a few more hits. It also takes advantage of having a high base Hit Point stat to stick around a bit longer for stalling a bit more. The effort values being placed into the special Defense stat is to further induce some bulk into the Amoonguss. A good number of threatening Pokemon to Amoonguss's existence are mostly High stated Special Attackers, so this will solidify some ground to stand on in battles against those threats.

Move set:

Spore
Rage Powder
Giga Drain
Protect

Spore:

Spore is a great weapon, especially for double battle support. Spore is a sleep inducing move that is 100% accurate, and a great way to spread around to your opposing Pokemon. Your opponent will not really like a sleeping status, especially from Spore. See a Psychic Pokemon? Put it to sleep! Fire going to burn your Pizza topper? Give it a nap!

Rage Powder:

Rage Powder is a support move that purposefully draws in attacks towards Amoonguss from your attackers. If you pair up Amoongus with a water type Pokemon for example, your opponent has a Pokemon with an electric attack- Rage powder will Redirect that thunder right onto your Amoongus, saving your water type Pokemon from serious injury or even a possible KO while taking little damage in return for having resistance to electric attacks. Rage Powder is so cool, it can be used to support any Pokemon regardless of type since it is used to draw away attacks from a Pokemon that is doing some hard work on getting in the KO's while Amoonguss cheers them on.

Giga Drain:

Gets STAB, is a complimenting attack which is decent, and keeps your Amoongus at least armed and able to do some damage. Even though Amoonguss is not an all-out battle attacking Pokemon, it can do some damage and will avoid getting hit by Pokemon using Taunt- which would shut down your Amoonguss and leave it for the compost pile for sure. Plus, with Black Sludge Hold Item restoring some gradual Hit Points, Giga Drain will restore Amoonguss's Hit Points by half of the amount of damage dealt out to your opponent. Hit a little, heal a little. Gain some nice health recovery when you target something weak to grass attacks!

Protect:

With Rage Powder on your move list, and Protect as well- this is where you can mess with your opponents mind. A lot. It can keep your opponent guessing, while they try to eliminate this supporter from the field. Use it wisely, and it will lead to victory and be quite the weapon to keep your other Pokemon alive as well.

OK, so this Pokemon can also become a pizza topping. Yup. It can't always stand the oven........er fire attacks all that great. See, even though Amoonguss is a Grass- Poison type Pokemon, it has some issues with fire and Psychic Pokemon. Alakazam in the Kitchen is just pure doom for this Amoonguss. You will need to play smart with Amoonguss, as a supporter for your partner Pokemon and a survivor. Watch for possible switch-ins and try to inflict sleep upon them. Trick room is an awesome booster in double battles for Amoonguss. Flying Pokemon will make a quick snack on this Pokemon as well, so be careful to avoid situations that will have your Amoonguss being taken for a flight it won't return on.

Amoonguss does not have a super fantastic move pool, but it can really do the job excellent in a double battle format. I honestly do not use Amoonguss for single battles, for this Pokemon is not suited for single battles all that well, from my point of view. This Pokemon is not some super top tier Pokemon by some standards, but well worth a try in the battle field as a supporter in doubles.

So, there you have an idea of what a pizza topping can do, at least this one in the review.

How do you like your pizza topping Amoonguss built for battle?

Amoonguss' access to Spore makes it an instant candidate in any team, but in Singles, it's severely outclassed in most roles by Breloom. It does have one very important area in which it excels, however, and that's a complete and utter stop to any Keldeo (if you're playing BW2, which I have seen a LOT of).

With Regenerator, Special Defense investment, and a moveset including Spore, Giga Drain, and some other offensive or support moves such as Sludge Bomb, Stun Spore or Clear Smog, Amoonguss can switch in on any Keldeo that hasn't accumulated several Calm Mind boosts, absorb a Hydro Pump even in the rain, and switch back out, regaining its HP thanks to Regenerator and being able to take another later. Giga Drain hits Keldeo's mediocre defenses hard and only makes Amoonguss' tanking job easier.

Other than this, though, I think Amoonguss is mostly a Doubles Pokemon and this article sums it up quite nicely.

I wish I knew more about Amoonguss. I don't have much experience against them. From what I know, Effect Spore seems to go off at random times when attacked physically so You'll have to use spore smartly around it.

This is a great review and will help me deal with them for VGC. I hope to go to regionals this year and I'll be playing in the VGC.

This is great timing since I just got steam rolled online by a Beaver and a Mushroom which I laughed at when I saw them start with them.... I am still learning the VGC side of things and articles like this are awesome! Time to catch me an Amoongus since I do believe it fits nicely on my team I have been working on!

Being a newb, I am kinda gettting the hang of it, so not so mucha newb but when you run through the attacks you could mention how and when the moves are learned... I can do my research but for other newbs who are not as internet capable as me it would be a nice touch... Also again I love the article and look forward to more!

Regenerator>Effect Spore; it almost never activates and 'instant' recovery is always nice. Not to mention that Effect Spore can Poison or Paralyze (the latter of which is horrible if you're using Trick Room) a Pokemon you want to Spore, although I will admit it has helped me in the past. Occa and Yache Berries are the best item for Amoonguss; never use Black Sludge or Leftovers unless you already have a Pokemon using an Occa/Yache. Amoonguss is going to be the center of attention regardless of whether or not it uses Rage Powder, so a measly 6% recovery is not going to cut it. It's usually better to put down something like Chandelure (provided that it's not a Helping Hand+Flash Fire+Sun+Fire Gem Overheat we're dealing with) rather than hide behind Protect and hope your partner deals with it. That Psychic resist berry is also pretty handy for Cresselia, but a lot of them use Chesto Berry or Safeguard. Also, never invest at all in Amoonguss's Special Attack. If you have a neutral speed nature, use 4 Speed EVs, and if you're operating under Trick Room use 4 Defense EVs. 4 Special Attack is literally doing nothing for Amoonguss, since it can still 2HKO Terrakion and select Water-types without any investment. 4 Speed is obviously for speed creep.

Quick note, Regenerator is absolutely godly in single battles, Amoonguss is easily one of the top 10 defensive Pokes in the game.

Okay... I can't resist the chance to show off a little here... but top ten is definitely a severe exaggeration.

Firstly, you've got to be excluding 'Ubers'. You did say "in the game", though! Ubers is a pretty offensive metagame, but any of the defensive legendaries will clearly outclass Amoonguss - Giratina, Lugia, and Arceus come to mind. Secondly, Amoonguss can't play in Ubers at all (walling Keldeo =/= walling Kyogre), so the big boys of OU that are worth their while there - Blissey, Ferrothorn, Forretress, Skarmory, and the occasional Cresselia I guess - could all be considered superior as well.

Thirdly, even if you just stay entirely out of Ubers, and want to ignore the list of huge defensive threats I just presented that exist in "standard" play, I can still give you ten more defensive threats that I think it's pretty safe to say are better than Amoonguss:
1. (SDef) Heatran
2. Jellicent
3. Jirachi
4. Gliscor
5. Defensive Lando-T
6. Bulky Rotom-W
7. Tentacruel
8. Slowbro
9. Chansey
10. (PDef) Celebi

Amoonguss has only one quirk - access to Spore - and only one job - shutting down unprepared Rain teams. Don't get me wrong, it's REALLY GOOD at that one job, but it can't do much else, with its poor typing and speed and only ok offenses, especially if there's a sleep absorber or if sleep clause is active (if you're playing with sleep clause). Regenerator keeps it from being a liability in other matchups since it can just switch in and take hits, and that's definitely valuable. It's GOOD... just not that good!

wooo amoonguss! so bulky, and spores everything forcing the opponent to rage. might as well post my amazing amoonguss set that won me regibnals-

amoonguss
-choice scarf
-timid
-252 hp 252 sp
spore
rage power
clear smog
(something else can't remember)

this was the main reason i won reginals. it had just enough speed to outspeed several main pokemon and its bulky enough to take a few hits. this was so effective as there was no sleep clause and spore is just a amazing move. regenerator is fine, but there isn't much room for switching in doubles. in singles, its fine. i prefer my effect spore sleep hax. all around, amoonguss is a solid team supporter, and with tons of bulk and access to one of the best moves in the game (in my opinion), amoonguss is a threat.

Quick question... when it comes to the IV's for an Amoongus does the defense really matter? I have hatched 7 or 8 that has 31 IV's in Sp. Attack, Sp. Defense, and HP with a Calm nature but the Defense IV's are always horrible... is it going to make much of a difference if the IV's in defense are 15 rather than above 24?

^Part of the bulk that Amoonguss has is in it's build to take the hits. Having a great high Hit Point investment will cover the small difference in the -10 to the defense stat compared to the 80 base stat for special defense. It would be ideal to have a higher IV stat in the defense to give it the best oomph to stick around in the battle longer against those opposing physical attackers.

I would not worry so much as to having a 31 IV in special attack, as Amoonguss can hold the Black Sludge hold item or Left overs combined with Giga Drain attack to regain some health to cover the lower Defence IV stat. You could try to re-focus your breeding attempts to increase the chances to get a better IV stat in Defence vs going for a 31 IV in the Special Attack. Even a lower Special Attack IV stat is a better trade off since your looking to build the bulk and Amoonguss is not really designed to hit hard- just stick around and annoy- which is why you'll want to breed for serving the purpose. A good amount of Pokemon are designed to be a wall that do not hit hard at all, either special or physical.

You could also consider how your going to use the Amoonguss- if your looking to stick him out against special attackers or against physical fighters in a Bring 6 select 4- if your opponant is special attacker heavy, stick out the Amoonguss, if physical heavy- don't use it. If mixed: make sure you have a partner Pokemon that can back up the Amoonguss while being able to get that same support in return. Just make sure to select your Pokemon with consideration as to what your facing.

Thank you and that is what I thought... Closest I have so far is 20 IV's in defense to go along with the 31 IV's I mentioned above, just hatched... might just use that one!
