Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Trophy?

Anyone who doesn't think this is a downgrade is kidding themselves. There's a reason why medals were given out of City Championships and trophies were given out for the bigger tournaments. Not seeing how so many people can honestly spin this in a positive light. =\

Edit: Also, I completely understand that the Prof. Forum would be a better place to talk about this, but it's not working for me atm.

Hmm, this is really disappointing, trophies were the "real" prize at SPTs. Oh well, at least it is new I guess

No kidding especially considering how awful CoL is :p
granted i prolly won't get T4 @ SPT or anything but i do feel sorry for the people that do, at least the past couple of "states" sets had been playable(HGSS and PL) but CoL isn't.
Oh well.

How is this a downgrade?

It's a downgrade because they've taken the prizes from a less important tournament (City Championships) and incorporated it into States, making it seem less of an achievement to do well. It's like giving out Victory Medals to the winners of Cities instead of medals. Combined with giving out CoL as prizes, it's not looking good.

I can see why people might not like the repitition with the trophies, but when they look so good, who cares if they're the same every year

After that - the trophies just kind of became the same.

I am happy to see a venture out from the "norm" even if they do go back to the trophies. I would have been frankly unhappy to see curved glass for States again. SAME OLD gets OLD.

I am inclined to agree. Oh look it has a Garchomp this year -- meh.

Who cares if they look the same every year? People who get two of the trophy should have their eyes on bigger prizes anyway

Despite having three of the same one (essentially) I still think they look pretty nice.

I hope they don't expect anyone to believe this was a necessary budget cut when they've managed just fine for multiple years with the trophies. Player base has certainly not gone down. I don't know if sales have as we aren't going to be told about that. I also did look up general trophy prices and I'd estimate they cost 70$ or so each for the biggest ones which is virtually nothing to a business unless they really are in financial trouble.

@Clay: Yes, they would have to replace it as that's what you do as a business. The correct play is not to copout and replace a very nice prize with an inferior one just because of a slim chance of it breaking. If you don't want to worry about the trophy getting broken, use more bubble wrap.

^or they could offer to players who are worried about it the opportunity to collect their trophies at nats, using that prize money they just got

I don't think I am kidding myself, and I have enough glass trophies in my house to completely window the house.

I think the change is going to be excellent.

How many players bring their States Trophies to Nationals or Worlds? NONE.

How many people bring their City Medals to Worlds? A few are seen wearing them (younger).

Guess what? I bet some younger kids will WEAR their medals to other events, and be able to show off their wares!!

I loved the old STS days with the cool medals that players would wear to the next one. It's how we met Mega Murkrow (name from the past).

Now, that era is coming back again.

Glass on a shelf, or medal around the neck? I'll take the medal every time, and I am not just being a "yes" man.

I have been more than loud at my utter disappointment for trophies for the past several years.

DIFFERENT IS GOOD.

Now this would bring up why juniors are still being catered to so heavily when they are the smallest age group. I think the average junior would also love a trophy twice the size of their head, however. While I respect your opinion and recognize this as being probably the most valid point, I still disagree quite a bit.

@Biggie: Really? You're just going to take your time to call out a professor based on posting his opinion instead of giving us some actual information? Come on. No one appreciates that and it just makes the program look less appealing to people considering it.

I still think we should cater to juniors and weigh their opinion over those of the older age groups, even though they are much larger. However, I don't see how juniors don't like trophies. Wearing your medals around to your next tournament is a display of poor sportsmanship IMO, while trophies are something you can keep all your life, and they just have an "important" aura about them; they look like something commemorative. The cities medals look like toys, and somehow I doubt the states ones will be much different.

The trophies were far from fragile. With the proper packaging there's almost no chance of them breaking during shipping. I heard about one in Europe I believe which was probably a fluke. I'd like to know how much they cost to make as I can't imagine it being significant in the scope of things. When you're getting 8 packs for 3/4th at least a trophy would be nice. Poor place to chose to save money, almost certainly without a doubt. On the off chance the medals are actually cooler then the trophies (lol) I'll take it back but I don't think that's going to happen.

I too have seen a trophy arrive properly packed and protected, but split into two pieces shattered right down the middle. And I doubt reproducing a single trophy (or two, or three) when they're etched glass is cheap.

Medals are easier to wear, easier to store (put on a peg on your wall vs have to clear off an entire shelf). I don't care if they cost less to make, they're more practical in every single way.

Honestly....the uber competitive players..we all know who they are...would play every sanctioned tournament without medals, trophies, or product....

Their eyes are on the real prize....Worlds.

We used to be on that ride here, but we have gotten busy with other things...if we make it...sweet...

Well, gold isn't very practical; its softness and malleability make it hardly a hardy material. Bronze is tough, it doesn't corrode, it lasts a long time, it has little friction, it doesn't generate sparks... The list of why bronze is much more practical and much less fragile goes on and on.

So am I right to say that you will be wanting a bronze trophy upon winning in the Olympics?

You know, after thinking about it for a while. Here's what I have to say.

After the initial word that the trophies were going away, I was a bit disappointed, however, I feel that this was probably something that was needed to be done, and may be a turn for the better.

Consider the following factors:
The weight of each trophy (1st through 4th)
The size of the packaging
Now multiply that by three PER location.

That's 12 trophies, usually shipped in 3 very large and heavy boxes for each location (probably about the appropriate size and weight of shipping 3 new computers). There are more locations holding a S/P/T Championship every year, which means more need to be produced. Also consider that a lot of these will need to be shipped internationally across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. I would never want to see the bill!

Just for fun, lets say that each S/P/T would've gotten 4 boxes; 3 for the trophies, and 1 for the "regular" prizes. Let's say that the cost to ship each box averages out to a probably well underestimated $20 (A United States Postal Service Large Flat Rate Box which is about the size of the 1st Place Trophy Box costs $15 within the United States). Let's also hypothetically say that there are 50 S/P/T going on in the world. How much would that be in shipping? Easy math 20*4*50 = $4000. Again, this is a wild guess and I have no facts to base these numbers on, but $4000 is a lot for shipping alone that could be diverted somewhere else!

Now imagine having to ship out items that are probably less than half the weight and require packaging that is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller. This would save the OP program a lot of money. Money, which in the future, may go toward putting out more higher-level events, prizes, scholarships, or even travel awards!

I think this is an exciting change, and while up-front it may look like a bad thing, in the long run it could work out much better than expected!
