Two Day States/Regionals?

With all the discussion about tournaments running late, and event attendance going up, I'm curious if anyone thinks State or Regionals tournaments will ever be two-day events? I have to admit I'd love to see a two-day Regionals and States, especially Regionals. Why? Well, like I said, these events get a lot of people, and in turn, they run really, really late. Florida's Regionals ran until 4 AM!

Anyone think given that Regionals is not only once a year, but the third biggest tournament of the year as well, that they should be two-day events?

Wow, starting up a lot of great topics lately.

"Will" they be? Eventually. A regional up in the Northeast was actually done that way this year, and I anticipate it trickling down to everybody else in time. Also, since Nationals finally became a three day event this past season, it only makes sense if the others start becoming two day'ers.

However, "should" they? I hope not. Although this game's a lot of fun to play, it's a huge time commitment for everyone involved. Plus, it makes the trek down to tournaments even more expensive.

I was way happier this year playing until 4:00 AM (and subsequently making a one and a half hour drive) than I would've been having to stick around for a whole other day.

Don't forget that swiss is 30+3 now instead of 40 min.

At a 7-8 round event, that's 70-80 minutes saved (almost like playing 2 less rounds while still playing the full amount).

It's hard enough for the players in my area to get to any Premier tournaments, what with having to travel two hours to get to the closest one. Then again, a two-day states is possible for us, since we did spend a night for the previous one. As for Regionals, it depends (and this trip's longer than two hours).

I was not aware there was a two day Regionals last year. That means PTOs are allowed to make their Regionals two days if they choose?

Well, I'll be the first to ask!

PTOs: Let's see some two-day Regionals in the high-attendance areas this season! Is two days unreasonable for an event that's only once a year and encompasses several states? I don't think so. I think it'd be a blast.

Last year New England Regs did this. Our region was the "testing region" at Pokemon's request. This was because the normal store our Regs is held in had been out grown since 2009. While for us the two day concept wasn't really needed, I expect we will see more of it in other areas.

Its a really great concept, sort of like a little Nationals.

I attended NE regionals, and it was a blast. I would love it if we did it again. Like Victory Bell said, it was like a mini nationals.

I'll take less sleep over less money.

I'd have to agree with this statement. For some people Regionals is pretty far (granted the most it will be away from me is 2 or so hours which is nothing compared to some people), but I don't want to do two day events that I am not traveling via airplane to get to. If you plan accordingly you shouldn't have an issue with being able to stay up if you get to the finals.

2-days? Yikes. I'm a bit mixed on it. I agree that spreading it would make it a lot more fun for players. (twice the time to spend with friends you only see there, more trading, practise battles, less rush, ex...) However I also agree on the cost issue. =/ I guess the only thing to do is test it out in areas and see how it goes.

Personally, I wouldn't mind 2-days in my area. Regional is about a 4-5 hours drive for me (which is why I haven't been yet) and a 10 hour car trip on top of an 8ish hour tourny? Not the happiest thought in the world. -,-

Keep in mind, though, that that would mean some people have to drive back late on Sunday (pushing it close to work and school on Monday), instead of having the option of going back on Sunday morning. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, just that it isn't necessarily universally better.

It depends on the perceived size of the State/Regional. The larger the event, the more practical it would be to run 2 days. There are tradeoffs, most certainly money has a lot to do with it. I don't think that Yoshi's timing argument holds much water, as if you start day 2 early enough, you're done early enough that driving times don't really change. I don't think anybody is traveling more than about 5-7 hours for Regionals (though I could be wrong). Does anybody actually check out of their hotel at 9am when they're leaving? I've never really seen it. Start the top cut early enough, and you're fine for driving times generally.

If you have regionals until 4AM + need for sleep + plus a lengthly drive home, aren't you devoting 2 days to the event anyway?

Exactly. So far, all the feedback I've read from the two-day Regionals was positive. I'll hope to see some two-day Regionals this year.

Two day events sound awesome. At regionals last year in so.cal, I played from about 11am or so until 2am and still had to drive home about 2 hours super tired. If they would have cut off Top 32 for the next day or something similar and started it about 11am to finish, that would have been great. Plus, 2 days of Pokemon when it is the only sanctioned event usually that whole month? Yes please. That second day could also be used for lots of side events for everyone else.
