In light of the announcement regarding the format change for the LCQ this year and the changes to the Prize support for Nationals (i.e. the removal of one paid trip per age category), it seems that I may need to reconsider the underlying goal for holding the Ugly Cup. The underlying rationale for holding the Ugly Cup and providing the financial support for the prizing has been to help enhance the player experience and to promote the game for Canadian players.
First let me start by saying that I in no means intend this year to remove my financial support for the game and the goal I state above; but I do want to make sure that I at least hear opinions in an open forum about how it is believed best applied.
For as long as I've run it I have had some players and organizers try to convince me that I should put my financial support behind augmenting the prize pool for Nationals and I have resisted this, by arguing that the game is enhanced by having a separate tournament with interesting formats outside those allowed in Sanctioned tournaments. But with both the new reality in paid trips and the LCQ format I am willing to reconsider that position.
So there are two Questions
1) Would the players prefer that my financial support be provided to the players who place 2nd at Nats? (understanding that I would need to spread this support among all 3 age groups -- so I am not necessarily offering "full rides" to the 2nd place finishers).
2) If there were no significant prizes (i.e. trip(s) to the LCQ) would players still participate in an Ugly Cup Tournament held on the 2nd day of Nats (Yes -- Nats will be a two day event this year).
Obviously I appreciate all feedback.
