Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

US Nationals Moved...

Oh no! St. Louis is the mean center of the US?
Why would Pokemon want to move Nationals to a place where everyone is mean? So mean, it's the Mean Center of the US?

Vince must be an exception.

Pop, you made me LOL.

My family and I have not been to Nats, and we were considering if we wanted to go to either Nats or Worlds this year. This news made my mind up for me. Nats all the way!

this has come up before: why does PUI schedule [insert event, usually worlds but this time us nats] to conflict with [other event]?

it's all due to the availability of the venue. they don't have a lot of leeway in scheduling dates, i'm sure.

not to mention that an early-june date for us nationals would almost surely conflict with school for many players, much more than a mid/late june one would.

Now that Pokemon is on its own we have the opportunity to really present Pokemon to the rest of the US with the best possible face put on it. Control of the look, feel and presentation of the event is huge. One thing that Pokemon USA is really good at is presentation. Now they can present our game to the public.
As one who didn't spend 100% of my time in the TCG-Pokemon area, I can say that Pokemon got tons of FREE publicity to serious gamers at Origins.

With Nats gone from a major Con, FREE publicity won't happen this time. So, to fill that publicity void, something will need to happen. Will non-Pokemon gamers/kids travel great distances to check out Pokemon Nats in St Louis? I doubt it.

Nevertheless, I expect this will provide a tremendous boost to Vince's already highly successful Pokemon efforts in the mid-west. That's one good thing.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

I know that for many of your Orgins was a huge plus as it gave you the opportunity to play other gams at that show. Pokemon Nats isn't about other games it is about Pokemon. You can play board games or role play any weekend. If you can't move to my area and visit my store! We can help make that happen for you.
Come on Tom. I could say the same thing about Pokemon. You can play Pokemon any weekend.

Origins is more than just other games. Certainly, it's nothing like Essen or GenCon, but it still attracts some major events from other companies.

I'm not entirely opposed to this idea. One good thing that hopefully will come out of this move is "more time" to run more rounds. Heck, we could even make it a 2-day Swiss round event with best-of-3 matches, much like what WOTC did at their major events (SBZ and Worlds).

Finally, as much as I love Pokemon, I need diversity. 8-10 hours a day for 3-4 days of nothing but Pokemon is a bit overdoing it, at lease for me. I need variety.

There was NOTHING "FREE" about the publicity at Origins, everyone paid for that publicity at a cost of ^$60.00 a head for a badge.

I have never been to Nationals, as my family has always gone to Worlds instead, but this year we may go to Nationals, as this move is a fantastic idea.

You're proving my point. Some people only go to Origins to play at Nationals. Others, like me, go to Nationals to also play at Origins.

Plus, if you never went to Nationals before, then this really won't impact you. For others, it WILL have an impact.

By FREE, I mean PUI didn't have to pay anything above and beyond the normal rental fees. There was plenty of talk outside the TCG hall about how big Pokemon still is. Some of the Vendors also got major business from Pokemon players/collectors.

I know some PTOs and POP people don't have the greatest regards for GAMA, which I'm guessing is the primary reason for moving. There's a lack of confidence in GAMA.

I'm not convinced that all of the problems at Nationals last year were entirely GAMA's fault. Plus, the decision to split the masters and invite more players to Worlds was a very good thing, at least for the players.

We may have been recognized by the Convention goers as a game that isn't dead yet, but did we honestly pick up as many new players as we could at a FREE event where all the advertising is done specificly for that one event.

That is thing about Pokemon at Origins...the convention goers are not really our audience are they?

Besides...all the major CCG companies have moved out and run their own events now. Magic, Yugi-oh and now Pokemon all run their major events as stand alone events....

Origins needs Pokemon, but does Pokemon really need Origins?

That's the same idea I was thinking. Thanks for pointing that out. Personally, I don't think Pokemon DOES need Origins. The event itself I believe will be much better off without them.

Do you go to conventions? Granted, there are some who go to conventions only to play their game-of-choice. But, why pay $50-plus event fees just to do that when you can do the same at home or your friendly-local-game-store (FLGS)?

For convention goers, you go to 1) play your games, 2) investigate new games, 3) shop for toys, and 4) party with your friends. Half my enjoyment at Origins/Nats is now gone.

For companies, conventions are meant to 1) advertise/demo your product, 2) accommodate your old customers, and 3) attract new customers. #2 will be missing this year at Origins. Believe me, I went to GenCon one year and without a major Pokemon event, it just wasn't the same (though I highly enjoyed numerous other games including my son who was in Top4 Worlds for Lord of the Rings).

I went to GenCon Indy a few years ago. Too bad we can't go there for Nats/Worlds. That's a convention worth attending for ANY gamer.

The REAL opportunity here for pokemon now is to offer video game tourneys side by side to both Pokemon tcg and Pokemon minis to help expose our games to a whole new audience.

Sounds good!

We love Nationals so moving the location is ok. I too liked the vendor hall at Origins. Perhaps this year Pokemon items can be offered for sale along with some theme decks for newcomers who want to play.

St. Louis is a nice central location. In my research I found that Phelps County, MO is the population center of the US, and the geographic center of the lower 48 is in Kansas.

see you in Missouri!

I used to attend Cons all the time as well as organize gaming events for small local ones. I know what cons offer to people who want it. There are many things I liked about Origins, but I can have those type of experiences here at our local cons or travel to Gen Con which is right now and has been for many years, the Mecca of Gaming Conventions

If you think that Origins attracts new customers to Pokemon, then we will have to disagree. As to accommodating Old customers, you and I are not the targeted market in the 1st place and I would hope you can agree that Origins is not extremely attractive to someone who is not already involved in gaming.

Agreed. Cons are for serious gamers. Generally, Pokemon players don't tend to be serious gamers, outside the Pokemon realm.

The marriage of Nats and Origins was ideal for me, personally. But, I can see that it means little or nothing to others who aren't so seriously into a broad range of gaming like me.

(Warning! dumb analogy follows...)

When dining out, I love the buffets. I sample everything and feast on my favorites. Origins/Nats was a buffet for me.

Some of us found $50 per person for bad buffet food painful to swallow, but love getting the Steak for free!

But, if steak is all you ever eat, it would get old after a while.

The reason buffet houses like Golden Corral do so well is because they serve steak in addition to all the other items. Certainly, their steak isn't as good as Texas Roadhouse, but then again, there's no one telling me that steak is the only item on the menu.

Don't mind the location change, but was hoping for a different weekend! POP should take into account that a lot of high schools have graduation that day. It affects more than just the high school seniors, as well, but all the family that needs to attend as well. It's sad that I can't attend Nationals because of my graduation, but I know it's worth it in the end. Hopefully I'll go next year.

Wow, you guys have graduation at an odd time. O.O Everyone I know has it at the end of May at the latest. Maybe it's a Missouri thing? lol

We have traveled over 600 miles 1 way every year for the last 5 years to go to Origins. We also have to drive 200 miles to attend our states. In fact, its closer for us to go to bordering states than it is to attend our own. Until last year, we have had to drive more than 3 hours to attend a regionals. Heck, not counting the events I run, and if I want to play in an event, we have to travel almost 200 miles just to attend a Prerelease. And as far as Worlds goes, well its a 4 hour flight after a 3 hour drive to St. Paul ,MN just to get a reasonably priced flight to either coast. And I hear folks talking about other events like 10th anniv and GenCon. Well the closest anniv event we had was 170 miles and GenCon, well lets just say thats way out there too.

I know this is a long post and maybe my views are 1 sided, but it seems that many others had done the same, so I wanted to give a middle of the country point of view. I mean wouldnt it fit several aspects of people's opinions in this post for me to say"what about us up north? Why dont we get anything, EVER!"

Exactly Troy.....I agree since I live 20 minutes from you......

I am quite honestly extremely excited.....3 hours less for driving.......get to show my kids a new part of the country and city.......less expensive for hotels. I think Pop will have plenty for us to do between matches.

Worlds and Nationals have been such an incredible experience for us I can't imagine not attending. We only attended 2 Nats but had a blast at both and are ready for a new experience.

BTW Pop it would be nice to have something in the North  Someday. As long as Nats doesnt end up on the coasts and stays in the center of the U.S. moving it each year would be cool.

Just my opinion

Origins needs Pokemon, but does Pokemon really need Origins?

Actually, yes they do! As SteveP pointed out Pokemon should at least maintain a presence at Origins to serve its existing players and expose new players to the game.

The real question is "Does the Pokemon US National Championship need to be at Origins.

The answer is no. A National Championship TOURNAMENT is not the best vehicle to expose new players and grow the hobby. Organizing some events and League play at Origins would serve that purpose and PUI should support that to the extent they are able.

And they should do the same at Gen Con.

And the same at KublaKCon in SF.

And Orccon in LA. (Its full or evil Orcs anyway!* )

Those that can't go to Nationals should grow the game where they are at! I'm sure there are several TOs and Profs who are not going to St Louis that can step into that role.

Make Lemonade as the old saying goes!
